I love Batman (is my favorite out of either genre) and a couple other comics but I like more manga though.

I really like how your avatar debunks your statement.

Personally I prefer western comics because we have Batman [http://batman.wikia.com/wiki/Batman_Wiki]!

With the exception of Calvin and Hobbes, no Western comic has really gotten my attention; action or comedy. I did borrow alot during grade school summers from the library, but they never grabbed my attention for that long. Granted, most were Star Wars fan fiction. Manga on the other hand, I have only read three series all the way though and currently on a fourth, so I guess I prefer manga. I can't really pinpoint anything though. I usually prefer Western for comedy and Japanese for action/drama. However, I can never really get into comedy when it comes to graphic novels, so comics are not my thing. Maybe half of the comedy from something is the audio, while action can be played out without it.

Alan Moore is a God, Naoki Urasawa (monster) is a god also.

I like the ability to maintain suspense in manga, but I like the almost cynical style of storytelling that comes from the West. I collect both, so I don't know...I can't stop reading Naruto and Monster and yet DMZ and Black Summer so far are shaping up to be little short of perfection.

I'm still on the fence.

I'm a big fan of marvel so western comics for me. (DeadPool is awesome!!)

Also out of intrest why do you need to read manga's backwards?
The Japanese, Chinese, and other countries in that region, write downwards, so the direction it is read is irrelevant to them, and right to left is what they picked for manga and other things.

And I love Marvel, but I don't hold any Marvel works in high regard any more at all (their comic event series always end rather anticlimactic), I simply buy them for guaranteed enjoyment. I'm into vertigo and Wildstorm and I'm getting into other imprints besides the big two.

If they are dead it doesn't mean their dead.

Each of the X-Men have died like 40 times.

The best example is Jean, every time she dies she becomes the pheonix.

And in the late 80s when marvel was broke they actully killed alot of main charaters and exavier became the bad guy and magneto was the good guy.

But then Marvel made billions of dollars from their movies and they rebooted all of their all charters.

My main point is Comics are like the Darleks. No matter how many times you kill them they won't stay dead.

Japanese text is written and read from right to left, or from top to bottom.

I generally prefer manga and the stylistic aspects of it, but western comics aren't too bad either (I have read Watchmen in accordance with nerd and internet law). I mostly prefer the art style (yes, I like the big-eyes small-mouth thing) and narrative style (not a Naruto fan, but I enjoy a good shonen manga), along with the quirky humor (again, generally speaking. I am aware of Deadpool and his destruction of the fourth wall) of manga. And I'm not bothered by the aspects of manga many on this forum condemn as perverted (just open minded that way).

Again, generally speaking, as I do like superheroes like Batman and Spiderman. I just like the continuing stories of manga better than those of western comics for the most part. And manga tends to be more consistent since comics tend to switch writers, which sometimes leads to very bad things (One More Day, anyone?)

I prefer western comics especially the "Ultimate" series from marvel. Though, there is a lot to be said for "One Piece".
One Piece is da shit! However there are quite a few other really good ones, however to read them you may have to do so online because they arn't in english yet, like Soul Eater.

Damn thats a bit harsh =P But i know a fellow anime fanatic when i see one!!
Now i believe there is a problem however, neither side wishes to give the other a chance, i know plenty of people who love western but would never read manga because they think it sucks and it goes both ways, if people would just give the other side a chance it would be a hell of a lot more fun at comicon
Actually yes I have given Manga a chance however, With a good number of them I run into the same cliche problems (expect a few of them which are awesome), trust me, most of my roommates are hardcore anime fanboys and they give me some of their manga to read.

Alright I'll leave you with your loli's and cast ammount of hentai, and I'll be over here chilling with Iron Man, Batman, The Punisher and all the other bad asses.
Yeah, they're REAL bad ass. They totally aren't childish fantasies.
Well at least my fan base isn't 50 year old Asian guys who feel up girls on subway trains.
Yeah, everyone you see at an anime convention fits that description. Old and Asian.
I'm just going to side with Glefistus on this one. Broken Wings, you are basing your posts on stereotypes and a Yahtzee reference. Not all manga readers are perverted losers, the same for comic book readers (besides, we're all a little perverted anyways). Also, not all manga is Hentai. That's directed at you and a large portion of posters on this forum.

For the sake of balance, I'll direct this at you Glefistus: Yes comic books are for the most part wish fulfillment, what's wrong with that? Childhood fantasies and wishes are awesome. It's awesome to be a hero who flies/swings/teleports/whatever around town to fight villains in their lairs.

I'm a both and a neither kinda person. There are some manga out there that are fantastic, I can't get enough. Same goes for Western stuff. But I find the majority of both to be iffy. I'm really quite picky when it comes to stories I get 'emotionally involved with.' If there had been a 'both' I think that might be where I fit in demographically. Probably.

I read some of my sister manga before. She was convinced that I loved it, though I guess it was alright.

But then I read my first and so far only comic, Watchmen.

And the rest was history...

Look man lets just end this, I'm sorry that I lashed out I've been having a really shitty day and when I saw your first comment it just set me off. The fact that you were just dismissing great work like Watchmen, The Return Of The Dark Knight, etc. just set me off, so sorry and I hope this can just be forgotten.
Forgiven on my part. I did correct you in an earlier post, just in the spirit of fighting stereotypes and one-sidedness (ok, there was a pro-anime and manga bias there), but in all honesty, while you did use stereotypes, I have seen far, far worse.

And Watchmen is awesome, end of story.

Let me reiterate that, I said most of the time not all of time, example, Vertigo's comics have a reputation of killing their characters and not resurrecting them (or the ones I know about) (examples are 100 bullets and Sandman)

Why isn't there ever a 'I like both' option on these types of polls?
Both have value, and I usually find them kind of incomparable to each other. They represent vastly different ideals and viewpoints that are connected to the underlying cultural differences between Eastern and Western values.
Both can tell awesome stories in a multitude of ways, show remarkable innovation of concepts and ideas that are rarely found in other mediums. Why does it always have to come down to which is better? Both rock.

...but hell, I admittedly indulge in way more manga/anime/JRPGS and such than I do comics, but I love them both. Comics on the other hand usually get better movie adaptations, so I watch more of those.
You are one of the smarter people here, realizing both are quite different flavors and both are great in different ways.

And comic books do get better movies like The Dark Knight and Ironman. Anime and Manga, on the other hand, face great butchery, if Dragonball Evolution and what we know about the Cowboy Bebop movie are any indication. They better not screw up Astro Boy or the Evangelion movie if they ever make it.

...you know, I know that the objective answer is "both are awesome." I know that. I still have to vote for manga in this case, through simple preference.

I've heard good things about Neil Gaiman's stuff, though the only thing I've read of his is some Sandman comic (which I eventually dropped). Watchmen is supposed to be pretty good, but the first time I read it, I had to really work to keep interested (only got halfway through, though, so I need to finish). The only thing I like about Transmetropolitan is the main character. I've yet to find a superhero comic I actually wanted to read past one issue. And as for the art...I'll grant I haven't seen very many different artists (I don't think), but for some reason, photorealism doesn't do it for me. About the only thing I'm vaguely interested in finding at this point is Hellblazer.

Meanwhile, I can sweep my eyes around my room and see copies of Negima, Naruto, Fruits Basket, Azumanga Daioh, Chobits, Full Metal Alchemist, Ai Yori Aoshi, Hayate the Combat Butler, Kashimashi, Love Hina, One Piece, Bleach, School Rumble, Yugioh (possibly a mistake, possibly not), Gals, Ouran High School Host Club, Aoi House (technically western manga) Lunar Legend Tsukihime, Chibi Vampire, and Absolute Boyfriend.

I don't think I can be objective about my choice.
