Poll: Mass Effect 1: Should I rescue Kaidan or Ashley?

You know the Virmire mission near the end of the first Mass Effect where you have to choose whether to save Kaidan and let Ashley die, or vice-versa? This is my second time playing through, since I lost my first save file, and I'm in a bit of a conundrum over who to save.
Kaidan is totally useless in a fight (I'm a Soldier class) but he's a cool guy.
Ashley, on the other hand, is much better in a fight, but a total *****. I don't like her at all.
Some background info that may or may not help--I've played ME2. I'm hooking up with Liara in ME1. I don't really command my squad to do anything during a fight. I let them handle themselves while I kick ass, take names, and chew gum. Too bad gum isn't included in standard Alliance rations.

EDIT: Ah, one more thing--is there a way to save Wrex from his untimely demise?
EDIT: I saved Wrex. Cuz I'm just that badass.
LAST EDIT: I saved Kaidan, because, even though he's a really bland character, I still liked him over Ashley.

I always picked Ashley, but thats mainly because the cat fight over Shephard between Liara and Ashley always cracked me up

if your going with liara save kaidan as that will make your life easier. Also if they make him into something like jack in the 3rd game hell actualy be usefull agan

When I played through, I let ashley die because she killed wrex.

I liked wrex.

Meanwhile Kaiden gets badass heavy armor.

I personally prefer Ashley but that is because I like her personality. Go with the one you like best, not the one that is most usefull in a fight.

Yeah, Kaiden sucks in combat, but I never use The ***** either, so for me it comes down to character.

Do I save the slightly bland, but rather tragic and interesting semi-Asian dude, or do I go and rescue the Xenophobic, god fearing, jealous, aggressive *****.

ME1 is awesome, best in the series so far, good work for playing it!

I chose Ashley. Theoretically as some may've already said, Ashley for the guy Shepard, Kaidan for the girl, but I just didn't like Kaidan, so even as a female Shepard I chose Ashley, and I'm glad I did. Ashley is the more useful in combat, Kaidan is just annoying (with my gameplay anyway, doubtless someone will rebut, 'actually Kaidan is better ~because~')

what did you do? all those month of therapy...now my life feels bland again...but the priiiiiiiize.




jacob is just so less interesting than everyone else on the Normandy. Mess sergeant Gardner is at least a racist. and he is just...plus his romance sucks.

Eh, I never particularly cared for either of them.

It's kinda funny actually. Before I started playing the game I heard that there was a point where you have to choose between two squad mates. But I never knew which ones. Consequently I spent the entire game scared shitless that I might have to choose between Wrex and Liara. That would have been damn near impossible. I was immensely relieved when that turned out to not be the case.

Anyway, I always ended up saving Ash because she had family.

If you like Kaidan more, you should leave him alive - it's Mass Effect, after all. Gameplay takes a back seat to the universe.

I went with Kaidan. I was already busy romancing Liara, and Ashley's xenophobia always got on my nerves.

Besides which, Kaidan had gone in with the Salarian strike team, so by saving him, I was also saving the lives of five or six others.
