KOTOR was a much better game series, however the things that made it a better series of games are things that the casual market doesn't care much for, so Mass Effect is liable to lead most polls on the subject due to the massive lightening of the RPG elements.

Mass Effect was stated to be the spiritual successor of KoTOR. It's important to understand that the thing with Mass Effect is that it's their own IP. KOTOR was dependant on not one, but TWO liscences. One was of course "Star Wars", and the other was the D20 rules owned by "Wizards Of The Coast". I think people underestimate how difficult it is to come up with a set of functional RPG mechanics that work well with a computer game, the D&D/AD&D/D20 rules have the distinction of being one of the systems that does, and that made it relatively easy to make games using those mechanics... especiall seeing as WoTC's own Star Wars liscence meant that a lot of the work in statting things out was already done, and just needed to be tweaked a bit.

Also, "Old Republic Online" has doubtlessly influanced them wanting to move away from single player RPGs based on Star Wars. Competing with yourself is rarely a good thing, and you'll notice you saw something very similar happen with "Ultima Online" where it was pretty much the death knell for the development of further single player Ultima games, despite the brief attempt with "Ascension".

Mass Effect was a much better game, but I preferred KoTOR's story and setting - Star Wars trumps most Sci-Fi worlds in my world.

I voted for ME as I haven't played KoTOR since '04 - and I don't really want to play it again as I don't want to risk ruining it for me.

A finished, fixed, and updated Knights of the Old Republic II could be my favorite game ever. As it stands, I prefer the first KotOR and my actual favorite game is Mass Effect 2. However, both KotOR games are outstanding (provided you can deal with the issues in the second one) and ones that I've played and replayed often.

It's strange. I hate being mages in a game, but call it the Force and give me a lightsaber and I'll happily walk the path of a Jedi Master.
couldn't agree more on any aspect, especially the mage part, i grit my teeth when i do mage runthrough's in rpg's, but in star wars sign me up to be a badass force wielder anyday.

with kotor 2 if you have all the revival mods/patches/overhauls and you have the mod where you can basically teleport to any area to get by glitches, then the game is *basically* fixed, even if the ending seems a bit rushed. so overall i think it is my favorite game over kotor 1

I think this question is rooted solely in what a specific person's fan quotient of SW is.

Me personally, I got to use a lightsaber. That was pure win for me.

Mass Effect is a travesty of a game, especially when compared to KotOR, which was a great game -- if they were switched round in terms of which order they were made, Kotor would absolutely be winning on votes, though that's not to say that it isn't better as it is.

I relaly hate mass effect >.>

I prefer Mass Effect. I don't want George Lucas getting any royalties through my money! I have played both and the background to ME is much better. Not the far too overused SW material. I too hope ME continues after Shepherd's trilogy ends.

Knights was probably the best Star Wars game, but it just doesn't have the same technical edge that Mass Effect does. The latter is more polished, smoother to play, and more engaging. Granted it probably wouldn't exist without KotOR, but that doesn't make it inferior. I loved Knights, but Mass Effect wins hands down for me.

For me at least, Both of these games fall into the "Generic Bioware" category, We have our protagonist who has to save the world/universe/small puppy/whatever but to do so he needs to gather a small group of boring, self absorbed individuals who feel it necessary to tell you there life story when ever you ask them what the time is.

Once said protagonist has gathered these individuals and equipped them with new trousers he can then embark on his/her quest. This usually entails running through linear worlds/towns/buildings and sucking up to once for your followers enough that they may give you a blow-job.

Oh and throw in a couple of moral dilemmas and a plot twist around 3/4 of the way through the game and you have every Bioware fanboi itching to hand over their money.

Back on topic though I much preferred Mass Effect to KotOR, I found the story to be (a little) less predictable and the combat and game play just felt more...Natural.

nice flame your puttin up there, too bad that exact same flame has been said and done 100x over before. and who cares if it's the same general game rundown in each of their games? does every developer not have similar habits to the games they have made before?

Similar habits I can understand, I can even understand why developers would choose to use a certain feature more than once, but putting out the game game over and over again with a slightly different story and setting is just plain lazy.

I generally preferred Mass Effect to KOTOR for the singular reason that KOTOR's combat system was rubbish. Granted, Mass Effect had a rubbish combat system but at least it required some sort of active participation on my part versus the KOTOR model of "pause the game, spam the same sequence of attacks I've used a billion times, unpause and then wait for my enemies to be brought to flaming ruin".

i can agree, but obviously they are changing it enough to the point that people keep buying them time and time again, am i right? i mean mass effect - third person shooter, dragon age is a fantasy medieval style game (the second ones combat switches it up immensely if you can tell by the fans response to it).

game to game they make some changes, but at the central core they keep the same general way they tell stories, ill agree to that for sure (jennifer hale anyone? and whoever voices carth in kotor)
