So recently, I've been thinking of trying the Metal Gear Solid series. What I've seen of them seems good, and everyone else seems to like them, but I'm worried that they won't stand up due to age.
My question is this, then- should I bother getting any of them, or are they too out of date?
(As a side note, I'd only be able to get 1-3, as I don't have a PS3 or PSP)

I bought MGS on PSN a couple of months ago, and I must say that it was freakin' awesome.

Get that game!

The graphics (especially MG1) will be of date, but all 3 games offer great stealth gameplay and interesting (if not sometimes weird) characters and story. I'd definitely say they still hold up.

Yes get them. I'd advise to get 3 first because it has a seperate story and is the most advanced out of the ones you can get so the transition will be easier. Gameplay however is quite different to 1 and 2, so if you like 3 it doesn't necessarily mean you'll like the rest.

So I'd say get 3. If you like it then 1 and 2. My favourite is 2, but without backstory it's confusing as hell.

Yes, and I am completing them in order and actually finished Metal Gear Solid 1 yesterday.

Calumon: Time for a revuew? Revew? ...Opinion.

One thing that will remain timeless is a good story, for all the silliness that has come from the series, it's still some of the best and most memorable I've seen in gaming ever.

Also consider the stealth genre hasn't really gone anywhere in the last 10 years, so trust me you won't be down grading anything in the gameplay department.

I would suggest getting the Twin Snakes remake for MGS1, it updated the graphics, improved the aiming and makes the game a bit easier to play(and see).

Certainly, if you'd have liked them when they first came out you're going to like them now.

The only drawback being that the voice acting has been re-recorded and is, in my opinion, worse than the Playstation version.

Even so, if you're going to get into the series this late, I would recommend The Twin Snakes.

Yes the MGS series is an excellent gaming series and very enjoyable. I would recommend starting with MGS3: Snake Eater as that is the prequel to MGS1 out of the lot of them MGS2 is probably my favourite. I'm eager to see what MGS: Rising is like.

Furburt I'm surprised at you!

I love MGS. Definitely my favourite game franchise. So obviously yes OP you should buy them. That said, here are some observations, probably presented as facts though they are really just my opinions:

MGS1 is the best game of the series. Not the TERRIBLE GameCube remake, but the original and groundbreaking game on the Playstation. This is the one you should play if you want to really understand the series.
If you enjoy MGS1, play MGS2. The gameplay is significantly improved, but I came away from that game more disappointed than I was after I discovered that there were no sequels to The Matrix (NO SEQUELS AND I WILL NOT HEAR OTHERWISE) because the plot is so shockingly and painfully bad. Still a reasonably enjoyable game.
Regardless of how much you enjoy those two, definitely play MGS3. It's the most complete one of the series and I suspect that if it had come first it would be my favourite (but it didn't so it isn't). It's worth getting into the whole Metal Gear universe before playing this one so that you appreciate all the little cross-references, but it could be interesting to do it the other way round (I wouldn't know).

Just finally I can't stress enough how much you should not play the GameCube version of MGS1. Imagine taking Ocarina of Time, updating the gameplay so that all the puzzles and level design are ruined because you now have vastly improved abilities thereby rendering the challenge null, and then imagine that they made all the cut-scenes ridiculous by adding ludicrous action-film sequences (such as Snake jumping off a missile Just Cause 2 adverts style - completely breaking any immersion or realism that they game sort of tries to convey elsewhere) and you've got what happened to MGS on teh GC. Don't do it. Please.

If you're lucky, you might be able to pick up The Essential Collection (MGS1, 2, and 3 in a boxed set) for pretty cheap.

Go ahead and try it. I thought the first three games were a lot of fun, but I won't blame you if you start holding Triangle whenever your codec pops up.

Yeah, definitely.

They're all such good games that it would be ridiculous to pass them up.

The first one may not have aged too well, but you can just get the gamecube remake or just skip it all together like I did.

I think one should stay away from The Twin Snakes if possible. All the magic of the original game is gone in this remake. And although it is updated in many ways, the cinematics completely ruin the experience.

Even though I suck horrendus at MGS, they have aged well and are still worth getting.
They are good games after all.
From the game I've played (Twin), I agree, both on the quality and my sucking.

Also, as the resident Nanoha fanboy, I have to compliment you on your avatar because Signum is awesome. Now if only someone had a Vita avatar...
