So the newest Metroid game has finally come out, and there seem to be extremely mixed reviews. I bought the game but haven't yet played it because of work. I'm considering trading it in for a full rebate so that I don't pay full price for a "meh" game.

If you own Metroid Other M, what are your feelings about it?

The Ninja Gaiden-esque combat is kinda fun, but I ultimately prefer Prime's actual lock-on and first-person.

What it does to Samus, on the other hand, is terrible. She should not be having military daddy issues. The game being linear, as opposed to exploration-based like other Metroid games, is also bad, not to mention that you get powerups by authorization, instead of finding them.

So yeah, not a fan.

It's a great game in it's own right. But as a Metroid game it has the reputation of the franchise to live up to. Sadly it can't even hold a candle to the Prime games. I do like Samus's characterisation though, I'm sick of silent protagonists.

It's ok. It's better than the Prime games IMO, but I hate FPS and no, they were shooters, not adventure games like the fanboys want to say to sound different than COD and Halo fans. Nowhere near as good as Super Metroid or the GBA games.

I've not played it and the only thing I really have to go on is what Spoony said about it. But from the sounds of things I'd rather play something good.

Nintendo officially classified Metroid Prime as a first person adventure, so unless you can convince them otherwise you're probably wrong.

I haven't gotten the chance to play it yet.
But from what i keep hearing and my own research i know ill at the very least enjoy it.
I actually think the story sounds good, even though the dialogue and Samus's VA/Monologue is horrendously bad.

I despise it with a fiery passion. It is an insult to the series.
Care to explain why? That doesn't really add much to the discussion unless you give reasons to support your opinion.

I don't own it. However I have gotten a friends word that if you ignore the cutscenes the "game" aspect of Metroid is really fun.

While it does not live up to the Metroid Prime games (which is an almost impossible task) I still really enjoyed it and admire that Nintendo dared to take such a risk with their franchise. I'd certainly recommend it.

This game...i don't know where to begin. The gameplay is alright, but really, it feels like I'm just watching the show, since you can pretty much spam the fire button and kill everything. But overall, the gameplay is alright. But what they did to Samus made me die on the inside. She went from a badass, mostly silent, independent bounty hunter into this whiny, scared, meek little girl who has daddy issues when it comes to Adam Malkovich. She pretty much worships him suddenly, and obeys him without hesitation. She doesn't "lose" her powers. Adam tells her she's not allowed to use them, and rather than sucker-punching the bastard, she willing gives up almost everything that gives her an edge, CAUSE ADAM SAYS SO! In its own right, its a decent game thats at least worth a rental. But as a Metroid game, it does unspeakable things to Samus. /rant

So yea, I'd pass on this one.

Gameplay-wise, this is a step in the right direction. Maybe not for Metroid, but this could be used in other games with better success. It's a good template, and it functions very well. It just feels a tiny bit out of place in Metroid. It's like it's trying to be the combo of Super Metroid (Phenomenal) and Metroid Prime (Also Phenomenal), and this works in both the best and worst ways possible. It's almost phenomenal, but something is missing.

Story-wise, it's an abomination. That's all I have to say about it.

Final Verdict: Rent it, and try not to think of this as the next big Metroid game.

Well, it is first-person adventure, but the fact that it has FPS elements makes it easier for that crowd to be more comfortable with the Prime games, from what I noticed. Most people, not only here, are stating that it does not live up to the Prime games rather than the original Metroid titles more often than not when the old games were in a completely different perspective from Prime.

Bulk of the complaints, from what I noticed, is the story and Samus herself. I just don't think Metroid was cutout to have an intricate storyline like other games, making it feel out of place.
I wouldn't know anything personally as I don't own a Wii and haven't played it yet.

Haven't played it due to me not owning a Wii but I have, out of pure interest, watched the cutscenes and gameplay on Youtube. The gameplay looks alright. The cutscenes, on the other hand, were atrocious - unlikeable characters, horrible VA and fake-y drama.

I'm not a fan of Metroid, but, by the looks of it, fans of Metroid should hate, hate, hate this game for what it does to the series' storyline.

Not to sound feminist or anything, but it took -pretty much- the ONLY strong, independent female protagonists in all of gaming history and turned her into a man-worshipping, sandwich-making, "yes-honey"-ing, pathetic little girl; and for that, Team Ninja should be destroyed. But honestly, what else can you expect from the makers of Dead or Alive, honestly...

Anyway, my vote is that it's absolute franchise murder.
