I'd rather have Minecraft than a 3DS. If you're of the mindset to enjoy that sort of explore/build/survive gameplay then Minecraft will give you far more enjoyment per pound/dollar than the 3DS will right now.

I'd wait for the 3DS to get some more titles first and get Minecraft to keep you going until then.

I would save the money for the 3DS with all it's current flaws and wait either for the 'lite' version (+more titles) or get another handheld.

Minecraft. It's become a phenomenon for good reason, and if you 'get' it then you'll consider it the best game you buy this year. It's genuinely unique and is one of very few games that I'd unreservedly recommend to anyone.

Minecraft is one damn game.

A 3DS is a system with backwards compatibility. But lacking many games of it's own at the moment.

I vote DSi. Or DS Lite. Or DS Phat.

OoT isn't out yet. I don't see how they're in the same league. Sure, they'll both take up your time, but the price tags are ridiculously different.

My advice is get Minecraft now and a 3DS after a price drop. Also, if you're smart, you would just get Dwarf Fortress, which is so much more fun than Minecraft. It's the bestest game evar.

3ds. if ds stood for duel screen then 3ds means triple duel screen which is a cube, which means its is a gamecube, which means its is the greatest handheld of all time.
Uhhh... Am I the only one who had a problem with this reply???

And my answer is to buy both. If you have enough money to buy a 3DS, you might as well throw $20 toward Notch for Minecraft!
do you have something against the gamecube, the console equivalent of a teddy roosevelt, bruce cambel, Samuria Cowboy Hybrid?

Well the games I really want for the 3DS aren't out for a while, but if I could design something fun to make, then I would get minecraft.

i would just say minecraft because its about 400 dollars cheaper than buying a 3Ds and games
I'm not sure that the OP is considering buying every 3DS game.
It's about $400 for the 3DS and two games. It's $20 for Minecraft which is guaranteed to entertain you for centuries.

EDIT: Wait, you just finished college? You'll really want that $300...
It's about 320 dollars for a 3DS and two games.

Just get a 3DS. Don't listen to the poll, get the 3DS. People saying that Minecraft has more replay value than the 3DS don't know what they're talking about, the 3DS has multiple titles, it's not a single game. Minecraft's replay value runs out after you realize you've done everything you want to do.

I guess eventually I'll settle if Nintendo absolutely doesn't see it necessary to make another version, but they always do. I just never get the first batch of anything. I always see those products as the practice batch.

Yeah, the current 3DS works, but what if they do make a better one? Suddenly I'm stuck with a touch screen smaller than the DSi's and the battery life of the Game Gear (that's a joke).

Doesn't always work to my favor. I'd like to have a PS3 that was PS2 compatible, so instead I have to have the PS2 set up.
The 3DS has a smaller touch screen than the DSi because the games will focus less on the touch screen and more on conventional controls. Also, the touch screen is only slightly smaller than the DSi's. The battery life is an issue, though.

Get terraria on steam. I prefer it to Minecraft and yo actually get regular updates with USEFUL stuff. Comparison, last minecraft update: Lots of bugs, a map(not even very good) and a trapdoor. Last terraria update, 30+ new items, like 10 new enemies and better world generation. Also Terraria is 10 dollars compared to minecrafts 20. 3DS probably has a lot of good games, but if you have a comp already, why sink more money into another device.

I mean come on you can't play the new paper mario on minecraft.
Sure you could, if you have an imagination and another person who would be willing on multiplayer. Heck you wouldn't even need two people. In fact you could play paper mario and then some since you aren't restricted to the game mechanics/storyline. You can make it that Paper Mario travels to space with an armadillo and a monkey in a track suit in order to face the dreaded king Zuulogue of the planet of Macadamia in order to not only rescue that ball and chain we call Princess Peach but to recover a lost treasure that can assist in curing the land of a debilitating disease that's not only killing the plants and wildlife, but is also making the people of the Mushroom Kingdom ill. (And yes I just made that up.)
I challenge you to create it and put a youtube link in this thread. Otherwise it can't be done.

For that matter anyone just quote me so I can see it. Or explain it to me I've because i've never played minecraft. But making a whole game on it seems a little farfetched. And the one that fits into the best series ever for that matter.

Minecraft, it'll last longer than the 3DS.
Especially once Vita comes out later this year.

You really need to start researching this topic if you're that dead set on it, there are tons of game recreations in Minecraft. If you don't believe me, check out a couple of these guys' videos:

And there are plenty of Pokemon recreations:

There is also a currently in progress, but playable version of LoZ: OoT, and there's even a whole LoZ minecraft community out there.

LoZ recreations:

As for uploading a minecraft video, I really wish I could, but there are two problems with it:

1. I don't have a video capture device
2. I don't have minecraft yet.

Granted, I have played the game, just not on my computer. I'm debating whether or not I should buy a cheap laptop solely for minecraft and save the laptop I'm currently using for work and school-related stuff. So yeah, Minecraft is a sand-box that gives the player the tools to make their own adventure. Want to make your own Zelda adventure starring you? Just download a map and have fun. Want to have a medieval experience and ride unicorns into battle against the zombie horde and dragons? Just download the map and mods and have fun. You can make countless adventures for only 21$. And if you want to start over, just load a new slot and start over. Heck you can have the same kind of adventure, but this time you could be the villain. The possibilities are endless, and you aren't limited to a story or plot line. And all mods that are downloaded are for free on the official Minecraft.net forums.

And if you want the 3D effect, there's actually a way you can do that on your computer.

This guy explains (among other things):

Now these are just my opinions, but I'd rather get 100 hours of creative euphoria for only 21$ than paying over 300$ for a system and a few games (that I have already played many times over on their original consoles) that will be the same no matter how many times I restart it. (Plus I already have a DSi XL and I love it. It plays my pokemon games and OkamiDen on two really large screens. So I can say goodbye to teeny-weenie eye strain-o vision, and headaches forever.)

And if you would have read my original comment, I wasn't telling the OP to NEVER buy a 3DS, I was just suggesting that he/she waited until the thing dropped a little in price and had a good amount of games out for it that wasn't just a reboot of a game. And in the meantime they could have plenty of fun playing either Minecraft or Terraria.
