Edit sorry accidentally posted...

I was debating with a friend weather MMORPGs are video gaming and we decided to resolve it by asking the big brains on the internet.

Give your opinion.

Borderline between "extremely boring videogames" and "jobs you pay for". So I voted no.

I can't imagine why they wouldn't be considered video games.

Think about it, Video (to do with sight or eyes) game (something people do for fun).

It's like people don't even know what words mean.

They ARE video games, but the way some people treat them makes them look like work.

Words is hard.

I don't personally play MMOs, but any time I hear people say they're not video games but merely "jobs you pay for" I chalk it up to hyperbole. If you don't like them, remember the famous saying: "There's no accounting for taste."

Saying MMORPGs aren't games just because you don't like them is just stupid. While they might be repetetive, so is racing games where you win races to buy/build better cars so you can win races with higher money rewards so you can buy/build better cars... see where I'm going with this?

As much as they are jobs, they are video game jobs. You "play" them, but you have to pay to live a second life.

Unless they are F2P, but then you are wasting time for free, as anyone with $ will be superior to you.

Yes they are, they involve cooperation, competition and character customization. You play them with entirely electronic devices and the main response is visual so I don't know what else you would call them.

If they're not games, I'm very confused as to what the "G" in "MMORPG" stands for. As for the video part, they played on electronic devices and rely (primarily) on visual stimulus to interact with the player.

...When did that go up for grabs?

There games. By any and every definition. There is no discussion. The question needs to be rephrased, because I suspect you mean something different then what you said.

They're made by gaming companies.

They're made to be played, thus they're games.

Admittedly you pay to play them, but play them you do.
much like people pay to go paintballing, or they pay their online subs to play Halo over LIVE, but those aren't ever moaned about.

Repetative grind is a necessary part of any level based game, so considering it less then a game for it is ridiculous(example: You grind shitless, possibly even about 6 times as much on Pokémon games, but no one ever complains there do they?)

Yes, the people who tend to get furthest in MMORPGS are the ones that sudy and research ever subtle nuance of the game's mechanics for more advantage, but don't people do that with fighting games too?

At the end of the day, there is a counter argument for most of the issues that people seem to have with MMOG's, I mean don't get me wrong, WoW lost it's charm for me about half a year ago So i'm not exactly the greatest fan or supporter of the genre anymore.

but at the end of the day, even considering an argument on whether they're games or not just seems a tad ridiculous to me.

I'm guessing that the people voting no are the type that can't stand to play a game that doesn't flash constant neon colours at you or has objectives more difficult than "Shoot Gun, Kill Stuff."

What?

I think it's the opposite, seeing as every single MMO has "kill XX creatures" quests half the time.

Because quests in MMORPGs all degrade to killing stuff or collecting items/artifacts, which in some way makes you kill stuff. In greater numbers than an average Serious Sam level.

Massive Multiplayer Online RolePlaying Grind.

But then again, what does Roleplaying do in games where only 1/100th of the playerbase tries to roleplay? People slap on MMORPG just because:

1) It's multiplayer.
2) It's a fantasy or steampunk or even future-spaced game.
3) You grind there. For free or $15. Or 20 EUR in EVE Online.
