I don't play them or even like them but they are games. Sure there's lot of grinding and some people play them like it was a second job, but people do that with online shooters too, or hell any online game. I've never understood how someone can put 100+ hours into CS/Halo/CoD, to me that's just as much "boring grinding" as MMORPGs.

Acording to the dictionary a Video game is "any of various games played using a microcomputer with a keyboard and often joysticks to manipulate changes or respond to the action or questions on the screen.". I'd say MMORPG's fit that definition nicely.

Think about it, Video (to do with sight or eyes) game (something people do for fun).

It's like people don't even know what words mean.
Words is hard.

I don't personally play MMOs, but any time I hear people say they're not video games but merely "jobs you pay for" I chalk it up to hyperbole. If you don't like them, remember the famous saying: "There's no accounting for taste."
I don't think you understood my original post as I meant for people to, I meant that well, someone is enjoying them so they are games.

democracy doesn't equal reality; for example, if I ask 40 neo-nazis whether killing jews is wrong I shouldn't kill myself (I'm Jewish). Likewise mob rule does not determine whether MMORPGs are actual games. BUT they actually are, since they involve some sort of virtual, player-oriented world in which you control said virtual world within certain parameters (rules). While MMORPGs limit how much control you have over the whole world and other characters in it, you still are fundamentally in a rules-based virtual world.

Technically, you could call it a video game. However, the genre of MMoRPGs differs from other genres of video gaming in that there is not really a plot, with protagonists and antagonists and plot twists, except in the fluff, and second, that you have to continuously pay for them, rather than a one time deal. After that, yeah, they're video games.

I don't like RTS games, they are like work to me, so they are not video games.

see how stupid that sounds

Borderline between "extremely boring videogames" and "jobs you pay for". So I voted no.
Im with this guy, I never saw any actual appeal in MMORPGs.
As much as they are jobs, they are video game jobs. You "play" them, but you have to pay to live a second life.
Logical loophole. What constitutes a game? The need for interaction? Having to "play" them? Would you consider stabbing yourself in the legs a game? It's interactive. You could call a real job a game then. Hell, you could call anything interactive a game then. Walking? It's a game. Suicide? It's a game. Having dinner? It's a game. See what I mean?

Even though I dislike RTSs and find them extremely dull, they do require strategy, especially in resource management, so they're challenging at least. The only thing MMOs challenge is your endurance...

The MMO gets bad press because of the community that gets publicised. The obsessives, the ones who think of nothing else. I personally enjoy warhammer online, i do NOT however have to log on every day, nor would i blow off social interaction to play it. I play it to have fun, not for some strange sense of superiority a lot of MMO players seem to get.

No, yeah, that's what I meant too. The "Words is hard" part was a... joke. I too think that MMOs are games, regardless of whether or not you enjoy them.
