Ever wondered how you could make your games console more 'blingier' (if that's a word)? Now you can... as long as it's a Wii.

What do you think? Is it REALLY worth paying that much for a gold plated games console, or is it the most over the top piece of awesome ever?
Man, when you posted this thread I thought you wanted to know what the most expensive console ever was. That wins by virtue of the fact that it's plated with gold and encrusted with diamonds, but that's cheating. In the end it's the same $200 hardware it's always been, just with some fool's idea of a sick joke plated around it.

Try [a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pioneer_Laseractive"]these[/a] [a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halcyon_%28console%29"]two[/a] on for size, they're much more interesting.

This is genius. Somebody will buy it, and the mark-up will be huge. I'm not saying I like the product, just that it's a smart one to make

Its a Wii, so by its very definition it is not cool, it is shiny and gimmicky.

Doesn't the Queen of England already own a golden Wii?
That's what I though, but I think that was gold-leaf rather than gold-plate.

They made a PS3 version of that
That actually sounds pretty cool.

Anyway, Wiis looks cheap and nothing will change that. I personally think the fat PS3 looks more expensive.

Never tried it, but I wonder if gilding a console would cause it to overheat faster. & if you're going to gild something, it's best to do it to something that won't die on you.
Probably wouldn't overheat more, gold plating would probably serve as an external heat sink, and as it is in contact with the air, would serve to dissipate slightly more heat. Provided they didn't block the vents or anything... Same principle as using aluminum casing for external hard drives instead of fans. Except that aluminum is a shitton cheaper.

And yes, it would be insane to buy anything somewhat likely to go bad like that. I mean, if it dies, are they going to replace it for you, or are you just going to have a useless block of gold in your living room?
Nifty, might have to look into a metal casing next compy then.

"Hey guys! Check out my expencive new gold plated... ::Grrrrrrrrr:: doorstop..."

there were some really expensive consoles in the 80s and 90s that put the PS3 Launch to shame. Mainly because the people making them didn't understand how to sell them properly (take a loss on the system, make it back with the games)... they sold the systems at a markup... they didn't last long, but there were some popular names on that list of huge console prices, including the 3do and the Neogeo

And of course the NeoGeo
the NeoGeo was actually at the low end of the "wtf will people charge for a console"

from the very first paragraph of the halycon wiki page:

"The initial retail price for the system was $2500"

That was in 1985, the same year the NES was released at 200 bucks.

Wouldn't the heat from it melt the gold over time?
I doubt a Wii could produce a fraction of the heat required to melt gold.
My god man... you're right. What was I thinking? *Smacks forehead*

Gold looks cheap imo... I'd prefer white gold. I still wouldn't buy it even if it was white gold. It's not like it's performance/library of games will be enhanced. Plus that's a fingerprint magnet.
