It's sad when game companies stop the online features of games. I want them to allow me to use my own server, to use multilayer especially at the release. That would be awesome. Why do you do you think this feature has not been released by game companies?

This thread makes no sense. What are you sad about? And what examples are you outlining?

Most games that feature multilayer do have it on release. Admittedly the lack of dedicated servers in a lot of games is a very irritating problem.

Boom Blox and The Saboteur are examples. How can I use this feature?

When game companies stop the online features of games. Like Boom Blox or The Saboteur.
What about it?
I've never heard of Boom Blox and I could have sworn the only online thing with Saboteur was to get the strippers to show their tits off.

I think the OP is saying that, when Activision pulls the plug on CoD4, there won't be any way to play it online with friends because they don't include options for playing with other people on custom servers, and this really sucks.

Am I correct, OP?

Hamachi.

Xbox live has a way to host a server even if the service for that game has been discontinued.

Dedicated servers on PC.

Solved? The companies should at least release tools on launch instead of forcing modders to create their own.

Well at least on the pc cod4 has servers people can setup, but later games that rely on activision servers for match making are certainly at risk of getting killed off, although I've really only heard of ea getting really gung ho about killing off any multi for games that don't have big player bases.

Thank you, that's what this forum is about. Games with smaller player based are getting their throats slit. How long before Halo 3, Halo: ODST and Halo:Reach multiplayer get pulled. Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 1 &2 might be next. How long before we are forced to pay for multiplayer(NOT XBOX LIVE).

I'm going out on a limb here - you're a console gamer, right? Yeah. Nuff said. Try another platform if you want any control over your software.

Yes I am. Are you saying PCs can use PC a dedicated Server?

PCs have had dedicated servers since the dawn of online gaming. There were matchmaking services -- notably Gamespy and the Microsoft Zone -- but they were always supplemental, with dedicated servers being the main attraction. It wasn't until Xbox Live made matchmaking cool that developers starting ripping the dedicated server options out of their games; once upon a time, if you had an old linux or windows box that you weren't using, you had a dedicated server. These days, most devs don't include the functionality, because console gamers don't know any better and they make more money this way.

Edit: Let's not say "most." Let's say "Activision and other companies that are trying to mimic the success of CoD." Most non-F2P PC games still support dedicated servers, as does at least one F2P game (TF2.)

The majority of PC games run on dedicated servers, yes. Console ports tend to be more likely not to, but traditionally PC games have a healthy support for dedicated servers. Of course in the end it comes down to the software, but still, your best bet is PC games, not the walled garden of consoles.

This is good to know. I shall now become a PC gamer.

Yawn, get a PC. Even when matchmaking services a shut down, player bases usually form around an alternative means to connect with each other. It makes no sense for a company to keep paying for the servers to run an almost dead game, when they've got new titles they could use that money for.

You know that ease of use on a console? Flexibility is what you lose for it. Bad luck.

That was probably the easiest and fastest Console-to-PC gamer conversion ever.
