I was rolling around Youtube the other day (yes, like a pig rolling in filth) when I came across a posted video of the Mechwarrior 2 intro. Being close to my heart, I gave it a look. The video was fine, but looking in the comments made me groan in dismay.

"LOL This isnt Modern Warefare 2"
"FAKE!!!"
"Is this modern warefare 3 with robots?"

Will the acronym MW mean Mechwarrior or Modern Warfare to you?
Or differently, do you have a habit of reading an acronym for something as something completely different?

Mechwarrior 2, one of the first truly memorable games for me on PC(besides Dune 2 and Civilization 1).

There is only one MW and only one BT in relation to gaming, and those are Mechwarrior and Battletech respectively.

Sadly, Modern Warfare has taken over the MW acronym for the time being. Mechwarrior hasn't been relevant for a while.

As for that particular youtube video, perhaps they should take 2 second to spell out mechwarrior rather than abbreviating, to avoid confusion. If the video title is simply "MW2 Intro" then it could mean any number of things.

I beg to disagree. Last summer,
"Mechwarrior 5 announced via teaser trailers"
http://www.videogamesblogger.com/2009/07/08/mechwarrior-5-announced-via-teaser-trailers.htm

And it was about a month later (in july) confirmed.

But yes, when the possibility of misunderstanding is present, taking a few more second to spell out the abbreviation is not a bad idea.

I think more people need to call Modern Warfare 2, Mewtwo. Since we all know what it means.
It's like people saying GOW is Gears Of War.
God Of War came first.
You differentiate between those two by whether the o is capitalized or not. Gears is "mature" and thus "deserves" to have it's name in all caps. Everybody else has a sense of spelling and writes it like WoW, GoW, ToR etc...

Mech Warrior 2 for me, damn that game was amazing. It's the reason I bought a joystick.

It was originally MechWarrior 2, and as such that will always be true.
But if someone says 'I'm going to go play MW2 on 360', it is obvious what they mean.

Whats the other BT. Just for ease of everyone else who hasn't heard of it I use MW2 for the game Modern Warfare 2 as I don't see it as a true Call of Duty(the basis for this being why IW was formed).

What's the other BT?
I sometimes see BT used as abbreviation for BackTrack (from 1998), Blast Thru (also from late 90s) or Beer Tycoon (2006 or 2007, can't remember which)

Really never really heard of it being used for any of those.
