Poll: MW2's multiplayer fundamentally broken?

OK, let's get this out the way to begin with: I suck at MW2's multiplayer. There's no need to post comment like "you're just bitching cos you're shit at the game", so don't! This thread isn't about who's better at it, just a discussion on what I perceive to be faults in the game's design.

Anyways, so my first observation on MW2's multiplayer is that it may actually be BROKEN. I don't know if anyone else has experienced this, but there's often been times when me and an opposing player have turned a corner into each other, I've emptied half a clip into the guy to no avail and he guns me down in one shot. Then, when I watch the kill-cam, my gun doesn't even fire from his perspective! I don't know whether this is generic lag or something, but surely they should sort this the f**k out?

The other thing about it that seems broken to me which is an obvious design decision is that once you die all of your shots count for nothing. So for example, if you fire a grenade but die before it detonates it just ceases to exist. Some people might think this is a fair design choice, and I can see the attraction of it in the sense of testing who has more skill to kill the other first, but frankly I think it's bullshit. If I chuck a grenade or some C4, it wouldn't just evaporate in real life so it shouldn't in the game.

Then, finally, there's the whole levelling and killstreak system. I won't lie, it's one of the things that attracted me to the game. I like levelling characters and unlocking new gear, and doing it in an online FPS is very fun. The PROBLEM with it is that the game doesn't match you to players of a similar level, you just get chucked in with any old players. In my experience, these players are usually far higher levels than you, have unlocked all the best guns and perks, not to mention they're more skilled seeing as they've been playing much longer.

All of this leads to games where you get dominated by players that have better skills and equipment than you, only for them to be able to dominate you even more because they get killstreak bonuses that wipe out huge swathes of players, thus unlocking EVEN MORE killstreak rewards. I love the idea of unlocking rewards and stuff, but when they players aren't matched it just descends into an unbalanced shit-fest that I'm sure is fun for the high-level players but is in no way fun for guys like me.

Anyway, these are just the views of a level 29 player. Maybe they'll change in future but I don't know how much longer I'll want to play if these problems are still around. Fell free to leave your comments and experiences, but try to keep the e-peen displays to a minimum please!

People still play this? Huh.

Yeah, I do agree with you here though. There are a lot of terrible design choices by Infinity Ward.
It was still kinda fun though. I haven't played it in a few months.

I just Prestiged again, and on my first game I got thrown in with a few 10th Prestigers, and several level 70s. Needless to say, I died a lot. Matchmaking is broken, perks are unbalanced, guns are unbalanced (UMP45 I'm looking at YOU).

I think you're poll needs another option for people who recognise the flaws but play the game regardless.

I only really started playing it a few weeks ago, it's my brother's game and I live a few hours away so I haven't had much chance the last 9/10 months. XD

Specific poll options are specific.
But yeah, I think there's heaps wrong with the game, but it's oddly compelling.
I'm ashamed to still be playing it on and off today.

Exactly, plus making people rage in that game forgives it of all its flaws.

To be honest, I don't actually think the Match-making system works in MW2 (Or indeed, Halo 3 but that's another topic). I've only played a few games online but every time I go thrown in with at least 3 Level 70's and I was the lowest leveled guy there. My mate is a beast at MW2 though so he's the reason my XBox LIVE profile is currently boasting a Level 35, 1st Prestige. Anyway, back to the OP.

I've noticed your first complaint a lot of times. Me and my friend have noticed this about 40 times in the offline MP and numerous times online. It's fucking terrible, I fire my SPAS 12, he shoots me but the shots always vanish short of my intended target. And the same goes for head-shots, we are both certain that it sometimes misses head-shots just for fun.

As for your second point, I'm not quite sure what you are referring to. I've got a few grenade kills after dying with a grenade lobbed, just as I spawn. (Playing 1 vs 1 takes away the point to watching them for me). I do agree however that the Clay-mores and C4 vanishing when you die are quite a bull-shit thing though. I think it might have been done to prevent the people who run around with Scavenger and a grenade launcher. Could you imagine how many Clay-mores would be around then? Thankfully, my mate and I tested how many you could place and we found it was limited to two per person.

As for the kill-streaks complaint, I never really noticed this. The bigger kill-streaks, like the Chopper Gunner, Attack Chopper, AC-130 etc etc, tend to become the target of about 2 people online and their missiles, plus Cold-Blooded helps a ton in these cases. Sure, a couple of times the person who called in said kill-streak reward tend to own the game and end with a K/D ratio of about 20:1. But the Predator Missile does have a bull-shit tendency to appear just above where I and my mate spawn at times. I call the Predator the "The Portable Spawn Camp Device". Again, my mate and I tested this in offline and it more or less spawned above each of us every damn time.

So yes, it may be a bit broken but when you get into it and start learning the ins and outs, as well as a few hidden things[footnote]The Under-Slung Shotgun is a motherf***ing beast. It technically gives you three weapons.[/footnote] it does get a bit more manageable and you won't notice these things happening too much.

...Well, I wrote more then I intended to there.

I had a free weekend on Steam, and it's one of the worst multiplayer games I've ever seen.

They just keep adding shit for each new iteration, but clearly not thinking about it. The fucking gunship kill streak things are some of the dumbest implementations they could have put it.

Oh, and the matchmaking is so broken it's unreal. Half the matches I played I watched people ***** at the host to change their name so it'd reassign the match to someone else and (hopefully) end the lag.

I don't know if it's fundamentally broken, but it does a couple of faults.

you said it yourself, for the high level players who have been playing longer it's more fun because they are doing better. Tell me a shooter where this doesn't happen. Say you buy a game 6-8 months after it launches and jump into online multiplayer, do you honestly think it's broken if your getting smashed by people who have been playing it, learning it, living it for that time? Like any game you have to invest time into it, learn the tendancies, where the best spots are, where the line of fire is, where people tend to camp, which weapon/perk/class your most successful with and go from there. Now to the myths, grenades do not disappear...how else would you get the afterlife bonus? I have often thrown a semtex, been shot dead then gotten kills with my grenade. The "broken" design of differences in what you saw compared to what the kill cam showed IS latency, interestingly we here in Australia get that effect in EVERY game on XBL, but in MW2 it's actually very minimal. Try coming to
Oz and playing an EA game online, you'd dead set tear you hair out seeing the shit we have to deal with in terms of lag on their servers[i know MW2 is not EA]. Half a clip is nothing. I have learned that the head shot is king when playing online, and have no trouble top scoring on US hosted games simply by being faster, more accurate and smarter than the opposition. Today I scored 41-7 on a TDM with a yellow bar connection - with no camping- and without the use of a high level killstreak because I'm trying to finish the prestige challenges for the lower level killstreaks [calling in 1000 UAVs' e.t.c]. Before the flamers fire up, I work 40hrs a week and have a wife and 2 kids, so no, I'm not playing 8-12 hrs a day. 2-4 hrs TOPS, but yes I do play most days.

I know what you mean on the 'shots count for nothing' part. I only play it with friends and have lots of fun with it, but it can be frustrating to empty a full clip of FMJ right on target and get popped with just a few bullets from the same (close) distance by someone else.

A small personal point of frustration of mine are things like attack helicopters and harriers, they just kill the action for me. That and I don't like that kind of fuzz to extend a kill streak.

Of course players that have been playing longer are going to be better. If you start playing golf, you can't expect to be at the same level as those who have been playing for years. You need to put in the time to be able to compete with those guys who have been playing for a much longer period.
I disagree with your point about better weapons and perks. I use the scar, which you unlock at an extremely low level, I can't remember which one exactly. Couple that with a silencer and it's extremely easy to have high KD ratios. You shouldn't blame the equipment and guns that are unlocked at later levels. I RARELY see anyone use AK-47, which you unlock at the last level.

Just curious, but I see you don't like a harrier or chopper ending your killstreak.....What, if I may ask, killstreak are you trying to earn, a harrier or chopper perhaps? Paradoxical isn't it.

I have and the problems you have are no different to any other online shooter, specifically, if your just not that good at it it's just not that fun.
