I didn't like it at all when compared to the first one and to make things worse my copy didn't work properly so that when I got to a certain point in the game it wouldn't let me finish the quest I needed to do to move on.

Yeah, that's pretty much my opinion. I loved NWN and all it's expansions but NWN2 didn't have a particularly compelling story IMO and for some reason the combat and movement felt really sluggish and awkward. Plus the camera didn't pull back enough so you didn't get a wide enough view of what was going on. Not to mention it was buggy as hell, I had to restart twice due to bugs. On the 3rd time I just gave up and stopped playing.

I also didn't like Baldurs Gate and Dragon Age for the same reasons (except the bugs).

EDIT: @ Tanithwolf, that wasn't just your copy, the thing was ridden with bugs. They did sort a lot of them out with various patches but after the 3rd or 4th time you get stuck it's a bit of a pisstake.

NWN2 impressed me through it's solid use of the leveling system. It's almost identical to how I level my character's in tabletop D&D.

The last level was completely unforgiving, too.

I played Baldur's Gate and KotOR before NWN, I couldn't get the control scheme down, it was so damn awkward. The camera controls, movement controls, and combat controls were all wonky, I never got past the bar on the road. I'm in no mood to try it again, but considering my friend gave it to me for free because he was done with it, I didn't lose anything.

It's not the worst game ever. For instance, I rather enjoyed the freedom of character creation, but I had a number of issues with it. A big one for me was the poorly written and designed railroading. There is an entire Act that dedicated to the massive run around you have to go through because they have locked off a district of the city. Joining the City Watch or the Thieves Guild should not be the only way to get through a walled gate, and even if you can't program in everything at least you could provide better reasoning for the options.

I was very disappointed in the game. I never played the first, but heard it was a lot better. I am a huge fan of Forgotten Realms, and just felt it didn't do justice to the realms.

I gotta agree with Nwn1>Nwn2 although I honestly can't explain why :\

Nwn2 didn't leave much of an impact on me, in fact I dont remember much of the plot besides you have your own keep and can upgrade your soldiers and all for the end battle.

In fact, to celebrate bioware reaching the final (regardless if they win or not) the game i'm going to reinstall is nwn1, not nwn2.
Graphics and game might be older, but the mods for nwn1 are also better imo, perhaps because they are easier to make.

I didn't like it, but that's because I never played NW1, but rather just finished playing morrowind. Gameplay is totally different and I prefer hack n' slash over d&d. I also went from Morrowind(sandbox gameplay) to a more linear path with no overworld. That's why I didn't like it.

Edit: Oh, and the characters were kind of annoying too.

The main campaing is bearable. I actually didn't finish it for a long time, until when the release date for the Mask Of The Betrayer expansion came nearer, I decided to drudge trough so that I could continue with the same character.

And Mask Of The Betrayer is an ecpic, well done and written expansion that in my mind competes for the 'Best WRPG to date' award with Planescape:Torment and Baldur's Gate 2.

When I these days play NWN, it's never the original campaing, but rather the Mask, or Storm Of Zehir (which was decent but not as good as the Mask)

That said, original NWN1 campaing without expansions was quite terrible.

First of all, NWN1 was pretty bad. I'm sorry, but I'd like to see ANYONE defend the plot and terrible level design that was NWN1. The expansions were a bit better, but still the game was quite weak. I'm not counting the mods (which were mostly pretty crap, even the top rated ones) and such, since a game should be judged by its own merits.

That being said, NWN2 was better than the first game. However, it was still mediocre at best. The story was somewhat contrived, the engine suffered from poor performance and the entire thing was poorly put together. The nonsensical expansion didn't help matters much, and neither did the bugs. Granted, the second game was made by Obsidian, so that would explain its unfinished state...

Then that genre must have been in some real trouble because DA:O was pretty generic and bland itself...
Do you actually do anything on these forums other than bash DA:O?

I only really played NWN1 for the multiplayer, which I played religiously. Playing multiplayer in NWN2 was like pulling teeth. You had to have all maps the server was running downloaded, compared to the original where you simply ran the map off the host server. The toolkit offered much less content than the first game, ultimately leaving the modding community very un-interesting, IMO.

^ Nwn1 mods were mostly pretty crap? :O

Good sir, I'm afraid we will need to duel to the death over this, some of my strongest video game rpging memories are in nwn1 mods. Some of the stuff people done were wonderfully creative in their setting and scope.

I would actually say that it was good. It was really good. I'd play it over something like Gothic 3 or similar. But there was something engaging about the first one that I didn't feel was properly captured in the sequel.

I liked it, but I liked the first one a lot more. It just seemed to have more charm for some reason. Also, I got fairly good at doing mods for NWN1, but never seemed to get the hang of it for NWN2.

Didn't mean to offend, though I failed to find any good ones. I went to several large NWN1 modding sites and had them list their top rated stuff, then went through about two dozen mods. Didn't like a single one. Some had indications of decent ideas, but the excecution was always clumsy, limited and unsatisfying.

Plenty actually. That particular subject has just come up quite often as of late.

EDIT: You must realize, the hype that game received made me want to get it (and I expected greatness). What I got was the biggest disappointment I've played in 25 years... Just making sure that other people don't fall for that trap.
Oh well, to each his own. I found DA:O to be a great game in almost every regard. On the other hand, I recently got to play Demon's Souls, also expecting greatness (considering that every PS3 fan was creaming their pants over the game). All I found was a Diablo clone with 3D graphics...

I think the better thing about NWN1 was the Multiplayer. I was a regular on the Wheel of Time server there and it was fun to roleplay, NWN2 didn't have as good options for multiplayer probably because the Toolset was alot worse than the one in NWN1.

I really liked NWN2. I didn't get it right away though, I waited for about a year, when most of the bugs were kinked out of it with patches. It did have issues, but I ended up enjoying it quite a bit.

If there was one thing I didn't like about NWN (there aren't that many), it was that the critters were too polygony. NWN 2 was pretty, with a much larger monster selection than you find in Dragon Age. And as a DnD player and original NWN fan, I do loves me some monster variety.

One thing I reheheally appreciated in NWN2 was the standard XP advancement. NWN may have expanded the campaign enough to make this necessary, but a 10% XP gain rule is just BRUTAL. You needed to grind through so many critters to gain a level. (This is sort of a testament to the idea that DnD doesn't seamlessly offer itself to a video game format)

Another key feature: a party of characters. I liked Baldur's Gate in part because of strategic options with a full cast of characters, and NWN was definitely lacking in that respect, only allowing a single cohort. Bringing back the adventuring party was definitely a plus for me.

Now the storyline may not have been as thrilling as it could be, but it did seem to pick up the pace once I finally managed to get into the Blacklake district. I enjoyed the landscapes with all the orc and troll encounters, I enjoyed the demonic lair of Ammon Jerro, I enjoyed the fights with dragons. They weren't anywhere near as challenging as Baldur's Gate II was, but it still was quite entertaining. And getting your own castle to rebuild? That was excellent, even if it required a bit of financial planning. The final assault on your castle was also quite enjoyable; it seemed to have a suitably epic stature to it.

I also enjoyed Mask of the Betrayer, thought the spirit thing irritated me too. I suppose it was supposed to be a restrictive mechanism to limit the amount of resting you can do, but it just irked me to no end. I disabled it in the console pretty quickly after getting it. Probably made the game a lot easier, but it was still a lot more like DnD and less like a game of Lunar Lander, where you need to conserve your energy and not "burn" too hard.

It ended up being pretty enjoyable, certainly a lot darker than the original NWN2.
Certainly a better expansion pack than Shadows of Undrentide was (I did not really appreciate that campaign), maybe on par with the epic Hordes of the Underdark.
Storm of Zehir was more like Shadows of Undrentide; it just seemed disjointed from the rest of the respective games. It was sort of cool that you could create your own adventuring party. It was uncool that wilderness encounters were fucking everywhere. I ended up installing a mod that limited wilderness encounters to 10% of their original frequency. This had the undesired effect of later making me a bajillionaire, when I got caravans traveling all over the place, but very few monsters to attack them. It was somewhat disappointing that I couldn't DO anything with all that money though. Seriously, level 15 and I can't get a hold of anything better than a +3 weapon, even though I have 50 million gold? I guess if I ever play through it again, I'll put a crafter in my party. ( I never liked crafting in any NWN game )

Well, learn something new everyday. And makes me want to move to Canada that much more.

Calumon: Wow, El-ar-ar and Bi-oh-wear or... what's so good about England?
We are all aware that Neverwinter Nights 2 was made by Obsidian, not Bioware, right?

And, Obsidian are indeed American.

OT: Neverwinter Nights 2 was.... Decent. I'm playing through it again right now, actually, but I find it difficult to enjoy after having just played through Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age. Two vastly superior western RPGs.
