Your "new design" is for PS3 exclusive games only. The "old" one is for multiplatform titles.

At least, thats the trend I've been noticing.
assassins creed 2 uses the new box art.

I am impartial to either design, but I HATE HATE HATE the fact that they changed their branding on the boxes mid-generation, for the same reason that I don't buy games with the greatest hits boxart. it ruins the uniform look of the games on the shelf. I have a sizable game colletion, and having the odd game that doesn't match the rest looks terrible.

Thats Kinda the reason I don't like it, Its the whole mid-generation change, that annoys me, and may leave me having two different case design foor the same platform, I dislike this idea

Here in the UK, Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time has the old design, but my copy of Brooetal Legend has the new design, being released almost a month earlier here. That's confusing.
Yeah same here in Ireland, I forgot to mention that in the original post

i prefer the original box art. I believe they started changing it because when the slim ps3 came out, they seemed to be changin the name from "Playstation 3" to "PS3". the new cases display the new ps3 logo

The old designs always looked quite cool, I don't know why no one else uses them. Haven't seen the new variety before, although I doubt they look as good.

Meh, I can't choose, both seem ok to me, the old one was kinda unique when compared to the other console cases, but this one looks kinda cool and slick.

It looks like they are starting to streamline the entire Sony casing process. Yesterday, I saw a copy Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier for PS2 with that exact same design on the front, minus the PSN logo (and Playstation 2 on it, obviously). Either way, both cases have their visual advantages.

I'd noticed but it doesn't bother me too much. The old PSX platinum range annoyed me much more, i know they were cheap but i really hated that silver disc.

Were they sued by spiderman or somthin and forced to change it?

Not a legal thing; Sony produced the spiderman movies so they own the font and can do anything they like with it. Just like Sam Raimi's soul.
