Ubisoft Unveils Toronto Studio, Splinter Cell Project
by Christian Nutt

May 25, 2010

In Gamasutra's latest feature, Building On Conviction, Ubisoft takes the wraps off of its newest major studio and its Splinter Cell sequel development, via interviews with key staff, including general manager Jade Raymond.

"All of the core team has relocated with me from Montreal," said Raymond, speaking to Gamasutra as part of a series of interviews at the new studio. However, she said, "Where you develop a game does have an impact on who it appeals to... When you think of it like that, I think the Splinter Cell franchise fits Toronto," alluding the the local flavor you'll find in different Ubisoft games developed around the world.

The new studio is working on the latest Splinter Cell game using the technology base developed at the Montreal studio, alongside another triple-A project. In fact, said Raymond, the studio won't pursue smaller projects.

"Instead of starting a studio and working on small projects, Nintendo DS or portables, we're starting out of the gate with triple-A only. The reason that I think that's the right strategy is that it allows us to attract the best talent right off the bat," said Raymond.

She also said that the studio hopes to grow its staff to 800 over 10 years, and that it has already recieved over 2000 resumes -- but finds that hiring the right people is more essential than filling vacancies. "It's more a question of making sure we choose the right people... the difference between the successful studios and not are those that hire when there is a good person available, not just to fill specific roles," she said.

The core staff beyond the previously-announced Raymond, who serves as general manager, includes Maxime Beland (Splinter Cell: Conviction) as creative director, Ubisoft Montreal veteran Rima Brek as the head of tech, Splinter Cell: Conviction producer Alex Parizeau as head of production, and producer Lesley Phord-Toy, who came to the company from Montreal-based A2M (Wet).

"We have a great opportunity to build a culture of our own; something that reflects me, Max, Rima, Leslie, and Jade, and that's an opportunity that you don't often get in your career and that's what I'm excited about," said Parizeau of the new studio, which is in converted factory space in Toronto's Bloor-Lansdowne neighborhood.

For a great many more details on the studio's staff, plans, and facility, be sure to check out the quote-filled feature, Building On Conviction: Inside Ubisoft Toronto.

Ever since they removed most of the stealth and basically made it Arkham Asylum with guns I've lost interest.

They made Conviction more "accessible" AKA water down everything that made Splinter cell good. Sorry, I think I'll pass on ever buying those games again.

So, is the new one going to be even shorter than the last one?

That being said, I never got into Splinter Cell games. WAAAAY to linear. I'm not asking for an open world here, but I'd like my levels to feel like I'm actually infiltrating something, not running an obstacle course. Heck, AC2 was more of a stealth game than Conviction...

Also, the last one was a shooter game, not a stealth game. Plenty of those around, so I'm not really looking forward to it...

So, let me get this straight? They give you a good stealth game with lots of sneaking (that would be Double Agent) but the killing-less sneaking makes you people unhappy.
Then they give you a less-stealthy but more secret agent-like game with lots of killing and badassery. And you're unhappy.
Well, alrightey.
I'm really looking forward to this.

Dunno about that. I quite enjoyed Double Agent. I had the Wii version (which I've since traded in). Admittedly it was the first full SC game I'd played since the first (though I think I played a demo of Pandora Tomorrow?), but it was still pretty damn decent. I was a bit annoyed because I'm pretty sure they reused the same map for one story path, but it's been a while so I might be remembering wrong.

I hated Double Agent (360). There were too many glitches and bugs. I got 100% on every level of Chaos Theory without so much as breaking a light. In Conviction it's literaly impossible to avoid killing on ANY level. That's just bad.

But that didn't have the JBA missions, did it? I think only the next-gen versions had them.
And, yes, actually, I can understand why you would want a stealthy Splinter Cell but Splinter Cell was never that much of a stealth game to begin with, imho.

I enjoyed the Conviction demo, and I like the new direction so this is good news. I still need to pick the game up though but hopefully I should have it and two others by next week.

Hmm, you appear to be right, and the Wii version was the one bundled with the Xbox/PS2/GC while the 360/PS3/PC was another version. I wasn't aware of this.

Intriguing. Dunno how the Gen-7 stuff played then. It seems that Gen-6 was all "flashback" while Gen-7 was played out in the present. What a weird choice to make as far as differences go.

It wasn't as free as Thief or MGS but it WAS stealth. Hell it's easier to shoot your way through MGS than it is in Splintercell (except Conviction >.>). In every Splintercell up to Conviction you could go the whole game without killing anyone.

After the utter garbage that SC: Conviction i think i am done with Sam Fisher. They lost me at SC: Double Agent. SC: Chaos Theory will forever be the greatest SC game...unless they do something similar and improve on SC: Chaos Theory.

If they release this or Conviction for PS3 I'll check it out.
Does anybody know if they plan a PS3 release?

I'm excited but for the love of god bring it out on the PS3. I actually found Conviction really fun for what I could do with it (demo on the PC) but please release it on PS3 next time so I can enjoy the full experience.

I really, really, REALLY wish they hadnt gotten rid of the Spy vs Merc multiplayer. Maybe its time for a comeback in the next installment?
