A lot of the people who run TF2 servers over-reacted to the announcement that TF2 was going free to play. They focused on how easy it would be for hackers, spammers and other idiots to create an endless number of accounts and keep coming back. There were a few that just didn't want noobs in their precious servers, they sounded like insufferable tools anyway so people are better off not being able to join their servers.
Quite a few just wanted to sit out the initial rush.
I can understand some of the concerns about the game going f2p, but efectively banning every single player that is new to the game is both wrong and pretty stupid if you want people to play your server. But people who pay for their own servers can do what they like with them and I'm happy for other servers to ban all the new players, more players for our servers.
