I just finished Dragon Age 2 the other day, and I'm not going to comment on the game itself here since there are a million other posts about it, but I was looking though the achievements on my Xbox 360 to see what I missed and there were a couple to do with a character whom I had no meet yet. I thought that maybe I missed him somewhere so I looked online to see where he was. Turns out he was on a one use only code which came free with the preorder but you had to buy it otherwise.

Which brings me to this: They put an achievement on my game that I could NEVER get without forking out extra cash. I can never get my 1000 points (100$ completion basically) without either pre-ordering the game or by buying it online. I personally feel that this is a major rip-off. They should IMO add the achievement with the purchase and not have it already there but not be usuable. I feel this is just another insult to the whole "One use DLC stuff" thats been going on making people buy new games over preowned ones.

I hate it, and I hate the companies engaging in it. bastards.

So... you're annoyed that the developers of a game want you to pay them for it? If the 100% completion matters that much to you then you would pay for the DLC.

It's not that big of a deal, they don't force you to buy it and in Dragon Age 2 they don't even tease you with it in game like they did in DA:O.
Pretty much all DLC's have achievements relating to them it's nothing new and if it bothers you that much then just purchase the DLC.

While I absolutly hate one use DLC for a number of reasons, achivrments are a bloody petty reason to do so.
Honestly, why do sa many people care about a little pop up that interupts your game annoyingly and does absofuckinglutly nothing to benifit you in any way?

He's bought the game, he deserves all the characters. To me, this just seems like removing Alyx or Barney from Half Life 2 if you didn't pre order, or pay extra.

Now I don't care about achievements, but characters? Seems a little annoying.

It's a mean spirited thing to do, but they are in the business to make as much money as they can. Making it so you can't get 100% completion without paying a bit extra probably makes a lot of sense financially, even if it's going to piss people off.

Was he a worthwhile character though? I'm on my third play through and am managing just fine with my current companions. You can't really compare the removal of an arguably useless side character to the removal of a character like alyx who is integral to the advancement of a games story. Besides all the comments I've heard about the dlc character have been about how bland he is.

I already DID pay for it. thats my point. I don't like buying something then being forced to pay more to get the rest of it.

If you cannot earn the 1000/1000 of achievements in the game without paying for the DLC then that breaks Microsoft's rules about achievements. Fable II faced a similar thing a while ago. So if indeed this is the case then it may be that Bioware are going to have to release a way to gain these achievements anyway.

From the Microsoft achievement policy.
"All regular disc-based games MUST have 1,000 Gamerscore in the base game. This means that any consumer who buys a retail game will have the opportunity to unlock the full 1,000 Gamerscore without having to pay for any add-on content. Note that a publisher may decide to deliver a portion of this Gamerscore via add-on content, but the add-on content will always be free to the consumer."

Why should they feel entitled to be paid twice for the same product? That'd be like Chevy wanting me to pay them because I wanted to buy a second-hand Corvette. It's derp for both industries and I don't get why people will defend game companies doing something they'd vilify car companies for doing.
No, it's more like buying a second-hand Corvette and then going back to Chevy and asking it to be refitted with leather upholstery. Something which it makes perfect sense to pay Chevy for.

I've no idea if the character is good or not, didn't buy DA2 'cause I'm short on cash. I think it's just the principle of removing a character based on how much you're willing to spend that annoys me.

I suppose I have to agree with you there, they did the same thing in Mass Effect 2 however, the DLC came with the game rather than with the collectors edition or whatever Prince whatshisface comes with so I can forgive them for that one.

Still, complaining about the achievement points is a pretty weak argument, even if there are other perfectly valid arguments as to why the DLC not coming with the game is stupid.

He bored me to death. He's all knight-ish and speaks in a reaaaaal monotone voice. Worse than Casavir. But he was like Shale aka removed to make a DLC but should have been in the game. What I mourn for is Dog. He was fun.

I don't know about achievements but releasing DLC on day one is just sick. Either add them into the game as they're supposed to be or release them 2 weeks/a month later. At least pretend to not care only about money.

I think the original purchase of the game did that as well.

When I buy a game, I sort of expect to receive all the (at the time) completed content. Games are already expensive, and if they charge me full price AND deliberately withhold content to make more money off me, then I buy the game used and play the DLC at a friend's house, those assholes don't deserve my money.

They don't always withold content and then sell it back later on. Some of it they were unable to complete by the deadline. Some of the DLC is completely independant of the game.

Games are only more expensive because we the consumer demand bigger and better graphics, academy award winning actors to do the voice work and musical scores written by on the most famous musicians out there.

But it takes our money that we willingly pay for it.

The only problem I have with any of this is that the codes EA gives me never work.
EA support are very good with support for these kinds of problems.

I'm glad at least one other person understands the basic concepts of business.
I like to think things through, then I scream from atop the mountain.

I couldn't have said it any better.
