Poll: One world language?

From what I can see, Mandarin Chinese is the most logical choice, but I would personally vote for German. German is the only language that uses Roman characters that is as efficient as the Asian languages.

You can make so many different words out of the small ones in German, and they are (mostly) logical and, at least for me, easy to pronounce.

My main concern with Mandarin Chinese is that there isn't an Xbox Live game that teaches it to you yet.

unfortunately i think it is going to be english since it is a required language in most nations for children in school. english is just such a flawed language that i wish it would die and be replaced by something else. i cant remember the name of the language but there was a professor that created the perfect language and it didnt have any words with double meanings and each syllable had only one pronunciation.

we should also get rid or the standard measures of units and switch to metric in the US

English, probably. Chinese (Mandarin/Cantonese) is just too damn hard to write and speak for most of the world.

I highly support this idea, multiple languages at this point no longer hold any real advantage. We don't really need to destroy all knowledge of other languages for historical purposes either, just carry out all out day-to-day activities in it.

I voted Mandarin because the largest number of people speak it (seriously, look it up), I actually don't so I'd have to learn it too. In order for this to work someone would have to force people to learn and then only speak this language, which would be quite difficult. Maybe if the UN started by mandating all international communicates must be in XX language?

I speak English, Japanese and French (really badly) right now but I'm not adverse to trying anything else.

I'd see it like some of the sci-fi series out there where English the main language, but many places would keep there vernacular language, for day to to day use.

Realistically, English. It's the biggest second language and most rich/important countries speak it. The only problem with it is it's a pain to learn properly?hell, a lot of native speakers can't speak it properly. French certainly used to be the language of diplomacy (lingua franca remember?), and quite a lot of people speak French rather than English in its former colonies, the French being stubborn bastards, and it's almost certainly easier to learn

Seriously though, English would be my choice, if any. I didn't speak a word of it until coming to the US at age 9. It's really not that hard to learn, I'm not sure what everybody is complaining about. Sure, there are some weird rules about pronounciation and whatnot, but it will not keep a person from understanding the main gist of it.

It's not hard to pick up the bare basics, but the way I see it, anything apart from that, for some reason, like homophones and punctuation, seems too be two hard four lot's of people too learn, we're it would of been easier if there language was different.

We should only introduce one world language when we no longer have culture boundary. Or rather one world language will help remove culture boundary, which will have its pros and cons.

On a culture/literature level removing language is bad. Language is part of culture, and the fact that we have so many different language speak the amount of different culture we have. Think about translation from one language to another. There are always those part of language that's extremely difficult to translate due to culture difference. Removing language is to remove these culture as well.

On the other hand the removal of culture boundary will help spread equality among human race. So basically it depend on whether we're willing to sacrifice individuality for the good of mankind.

My answer is no. The good of mankind is over-rated.

How is Mandarin so low on the poll?

It is the most popular language second to English.

One of those would become the world language, but most likely a mixture of the two.
