TL;DR: Post your online dating stories.

So I set a profile up on eHarmony a while back while I was still in Japan, and that was my first mistake because guess who doesn't use eHarmony... The Japanese.

But no, I really did it to see if there's anyone that matches up with me on a personal level, and what those women would sound like. I am eccentric and strange, even by nerd standards, and find bars and clubs to be terrible places to meet quality people. It was a refreshing experience, but still held that "online" sterility and didn't amaze me as I hoped it would. I never met anyone in person because I was in 'effing Japan and they were usually in Australia/US/Canada.

Since I'm back in the states, I just reconfigured it to my new location and I'm going to see what's what again.

I gave it a shot once, I used match.com and I met a cool chic. It didn't really go anywhere, but I really wasn't expecting it to. I guess it's worth giving a try if you're not shy.

That's the social stigma since 5 years ago, but it's made leaps and bounds forward since online social networking like MySpace and Facebook gained massive popularity.

Here's a good summary of the pros and cons and mildly humorous, and answers your statement directly:

I've tried it but all 7 times it turned about to be the same middle age man.
Woah, I thought that was made up by all the webcomic artists.

Expand! =D
Is there a real need, I think everyone has a their own reasons. Actually heres my summing up "online dating, so no-one has to look at me or engage me in real conversation"

Edit:Or "Online dating, now I know your age, name and mothers maiden name you've given me so much more than love"

Real conversation?

Funny, that's why I go to online forums in the first place. Hell, it's damn near illegal to talk sex/religion/politics where I work (military).

Also, when you don't post a picture of yourself on these sites, people always assume the worst. Sexual predators with false pictures looking to rape lonely individuals notwithstanding, of course.

Why is that? People seek out partners in pubs, work, pictures, bus stops, street corners, and dolphin sanctuaries. Why is it any different seeking it out on the internet?

No. Very unlikely I'm going to meet the kind of girls i get on with on an online dating site. Plus if we need to go on a date it probably isn't going to work.

Just fell like there's a social stigma attached to it. But when you put it like that it does seem kinda dumb to think like that.

I tried eHarmony found out they don't match you if you're not Jewish or some form of Christian (they don't say that, instead they basically say noone would ever want you and that allowing you on their site would be a liability). Actually I met my current girlfriend on this site made for /b/tards called Anonidate. We've been going out for 8 months now and its a pretty good relationship.

Online dating is good if you live in a place like Vegas and don't have a lot of money or expect a girl to have more depth then how interested in money she is. I tried the conventional way for 5 years before I gave up and gave online a try. Never payed a cent to the angencies either. Go figure.

It's bullshit run by scam artists taking advantage of desperate people. Plus there is a social stigma attached to it.

They wouldn't have the money to make commercials on prime time TV if it was a scam. They gotta have some sort of success backing that.

I've never tried it, but a guy in my neighborhood did a long time ago. The girl lied that she was over 18 when she was 15, the parents pressed charges against the guy or something, and he was sent to jail and is considered an official sex offender in the U.S. even though he's an innocent guy.
