And did they say anything about installing Origin to activate TOR?
You can use the EA account you made for Battlefield as the account for TOR, they've merged together some time ago I believe. As for Origin and TOR, here's the quote from the Dev here:

Thank you for the clarification, Stephen. I have one more question, will we have to install Origin and run it in order to play the game, get updates, etc. even if we purchase a boxed copy?
No, you won't.

While Origin will be the exclusive digital retailer for Star Wars: The Old Republic (in other words, if you want to buy it online and download it, you?ll do so through Origin) that does not mean that Origin is required for you to access or play The Old Republic.

Origin is a digital storefront, and the desktop application is there to give you quick access to Origin exclusives and deals.

However, you won?t need to launch the Origin application to run The Old Republic, nor will you patch the game via Origin. Once the game is on your hard disk, you?ll be connecting to our servers to patch and launch the game, and Origin does not have to be running to do that.

edit: Added original question Mr. Reid was answering, for better context.

Steam will win. It has way too much of a head start over Origin, is better than Origin and Steam isn't run by childish gits.

Edit: Correct me if I'm wrong but could you not just buy an EA game from a retailer then put it in your Steam Library as a non-Steam game?

Correct, my friends will be seeing

Resonance is playing Mass Effect 3 (non-steam game)
Resonance is playing Battlefield 3 (non-steam game)

But... EA servers are shit.
Honestly, they're as reliable as a rock bein' a life-preserver.

That's actually pretty damned reliable. Well, mostly. If it's anything but say, Pumice, it'll ALWAYS sink, so that's reliable. However, if it IS Pumice, it would need to displace more water than it weighs (+ your own weight) to stay afloat.

So, they are reliable, for all the wrong reasons.

I've had a bad first experience with Origin. I was going to install the DLC for Need for Speed Shift 2 (which is a first for them), so I Googled the DLC, looking for the traditional patch.exe file to give me the DLC. Couldn't find it. I then realized I had to download Origin, create a new account (because my last EA accounts aren't good enough), then search for the DLC which is difficult because it doesn't come up in the search bar. After this, I wondered why EA would make me go through all this shit because they want me to use their Steam clone.

I'm supporting whoever gives me more free stuff, so currently Valve.
Valve gives us free-stuff? Isn't it cheap stuff? I mean they had Portal 1 for free once but were there any other times? Not sure myself.
They also gave away one of their top games, TF2, and the Summer Sale gave away stuff, if you had tickets by getting 'cheevs and what not

I understand that they may be trying to balance out the digital distribution field to allow for more competition, but this all sounds like they're getting sort of some exclusivity deal with Origin. I know they're not moving solely to Origin, but I'd imagine they're getting a deal just for not having it on Steam since that would bring tons of customers for the other platforms.

I'm fine with a little healthy competition, but if this ends up coming to me needing to install a different client for every damn game I buy, that'll piss me off.

I don't use either since I game on the consoles. And when I do get a computer for gaming, it will be steam for my free copy of Team Fortress and indy games. Everything else is going to be probably physical copy.

Well, competition is always a good thing. That said, however, i hope Steam crushes Origin.
Here here.

The reason that competition is good is that monopolies are prevented from taking foot and then using their power as sole distributor / provider / creator to distort the market and create higher prices. However... Steam recognise doing that would open up a potential gap in the market... therefore they have the best, cheapest sales of games seen anywhere in the world xD

EA are c*nts... no... rather a triple c*nted hooker. They don't mind what they have to do, they will advertise in perverse ways and be complete dicks about the way they do things, so long as they get a few more... sales.

Down with Origin, but Steam can slaughter them via pricing them out of the market (by lowering their prices).

My apologies, I completely forgot about TF2[sub]despite me owning the game.[/sub] And true that but I feel that Valve's sales make them a better company than giving away free stuff. Their prices are ridiculously low.

Battlefield 3 is not going to be on Steam, and even if you get a retail copy, you will still have to use Origin.

I'll use Steam, since I've used it for years and it works great. EA can try to compete, but they'll need to do better than a horribly-optimized copy of Steam. Plus the fact that they're trying to force you to use it just pisses me off.
The one thing I dislike about Bioware...

They are tied to EA

I've just realised I'm going to HAVE to use origin for TOR and ME3...

fuck
Yepp TOR is a Origin exclusive.....Is there an origin app like steam or is it just go to website log in from there and so on and so forth

The only way I could possibly see myself using Origin is if EA has the poor business sense to not sell Mass Effect 3 over Steam, and even then only if the retail version requires the use of Origin. Which, knowing EA, it probably will.

Even then I'm still siding with Steam, as I have bought a crap load of games from them and enjoy the convenience.

Neither. Digital distribution is the enemy. I haven't PC gamed since Fallout 3 back in 08 or 09 (I can't remember anymore)

Gabe Newell is in charge of steam, that alone buys my loyalty. That man is a king and only a fool would deny it.

Well unless i can't get ME3 and DA3 from Gamestation or something (if steam doesn't have it) then i guess i may buy it from Origin, but i hate EA's DRM anyway the original ME wouldn't let me play it anymore because i'd installed it too many times on the same machine...

At the end of the day if EA wanted to do something like this they should have done it earlier rather than now when pretty much everyone on pc (that i know) uses Steam which in my opinion has the best form of DRM, one that doesn't get in the way of you playing the game.

I really don't see what the big deal is hear - it's not like one distributer will destroy the other. With exception of certain games be removed, steams user will be completely unaffected, and if you cant stand having to buy EA's game's off origin then just buy discs.

In fact, I would think that gamers will benefit from the competion cause by another powerhouse digital distributer - not that Steam's prices could get much lower, but if Valve does find themselves in a postion where origion poses a credible threat, consumers can expect to reap the rewards.

It's just business.
