Poll: Pacific Rim vs The Avengers

I love Guillermo, he's basically a child with lots of money making what he watches on saturday mornings into feature length films.
But I have to side with Avengers on this one. It simply nailed everything that an Avengers movie should have been, and had a 1st and 2nd act that were far more enjoyable then Pacific Rim's.
Plus a sequel for Avengers is on the way staring FRIKIN ULTRON, meanwhile Pacific Rim, being original IP and what not, is less certain... which I reeeeally hope it gets the sequel it deserves goddamn it! F@#% box office numbers! Movies need more giant robot IPs asap!

The Avengers suffers from a severe case of being written and directed by a hack.
It was just a big dumb action movie.
Pacific Rim was a big action movie, but it felt clever and novel at all times. It was a perfectly made cheeseburger.

Pacific Rim was more fun, Avengers had more potential. I'd call it even.

That said the Avengers taking on a Jaeger from Pacific Rim? That I'd definitely watch.

Pacific Rim bored me so much that I pulled out my cellphone and started reading Puella Magi Madoka Magica fanfiction through the climax.

Using your cellphone in a theater while other people are trying to enjoy the movie? Shame on you. Even if you have the sound turned off the bright light is still annoying in an otherwise dark theater.

If you're not enjoying the movie that much it's more considerate to just walk out and leave.

The theater was nearly empty, I was shielding the light with my very heavy jacket, there was no one on either side of me, and a great big wall behind me. If there was a chance of someone seeing me, of course I wouldn't have. But the only way someone could have seen the light was if they were going out of their way to look over my shoulder.

Well, I'm simply watching Pacific Rim a lot more than The Avengers, so...

Pacific Rim, mainly due to it's overall originality while still making it an homage to giant fighting robots and giant monsters... Sure, the dialog was a bit cheesy at times, but did you really watch the movie for the interesting dialog or the giant fighting sequences? (Both? Well... uh... okay then...)

Plus, out of both of those movies, Pacific Rim was the only movie where I walked out of the theater, yelling, "Oh my Glob! This was the greatest movie I've ever seen in my life!!" like I was Chester A. Bum... Yes, I have seen the Avengers more than Pacific Rim at this point, but I remember more from the "Rim" than I do with the "Avenge"...

I find Pacific Rim a lot more fun, frankly. Besides, I feel that Avengers is just way too overhyped by its fans. Not that it's bad, it's just not as good or at least I'm not invested enough to actually like it that much. I don't know, Xmen: First Class felt a lot more involving and better written. But Pacific Rim on the other hand, taps into my inner childs instinct of mashing together action figures or bionicles and doing explosion noises with my mouth. It's pure, mindless fun.

Having enjoyed both, I'm going with Avengers. This surprises me, as I'm emphatically NOT a comic book fan (not that I DISLIKE them as such, just wasn't really something I paid much attention to), and I've frequently been annoyed by the sheer power discrepency of the team (two nigh unstoppable forces don't seem well suited to be on the same team as two powerless humans. Iron Man makes up for it by having hypertech and my sheer enjoyment of RDJ's portrayal and Captain America gets a pass by being augmented, even if I don't really enjoy him as a character much. But the two assasins just...don't seem to fit. The movie does a good job in making them (or at least one of them) seem important, but who would you really rather have on your side? A god of thunder, or someone with a few trick arrows?

Sorry, tangent. Point is, despite the weird tier setup, Avengers was awesome. Good dialogue, decent story, interesting references (most of which I missed I'm sure, but the ones I got made me smile), and just plain well done. Pacific Rim, on the other hand...I'm not sure exactly why I put it as lesser. Maybe it's my suspension of disbelief. There were few things tossed in there that my brain forces me to argue against. So does the Avengers, but logic went out the window their when magic and gamma radiation that doesn't kill you gets involved, so it's easier to stomach. It's the little things, too. Like using a ship as a club without it tearing itself in half before you finished swinging. Or the staggering idiocy of the "let's build a wall and hope that keeps them out" bit.

Again, I liked both, but going to go with Avengers I think.

Avengers wins for me, because after the movie I felt supercharged. Then I saw it at home months later and STILL got the same feeling of goosebumps and smiles all the way through. Pacific Rim just felt less... good. Like a whole lot of useless filler in between AWESOME GIANT MECHS AND KAIJU RAWRRARWWARAR... Not enough substance to back it up for me. Sorry, Avengers win. Flawless Victory. FATALITY

Avengers had better talky bits, but disappointing action bits. Pacific Rim had better action bits, but crappy talky bits.

Honestly, I found them both pretty meh. I guess I'd have to go with Pacific Rim for sheer visual spectacle.

Don't get me wrong, I saw Pacific Rim in IMAX and really enjoyed it, but Idris Elba and the Hellboy dude were the only good performances. Charlie Hunnam cannot compete with RDJ or any of the Marvel leads.

I love both absolutely, but Avengers has Tony Stark. Pacific Rim is like Infinity Awesome Minus One in comparison.

I have to go with "Avengers".

I really liked "Pacific Rim", but I didn't think it was anywhere near as good as it could have been. After the first battle, the movie felt like it dragged on forever before anything happened, and all I was thinking was "when are there going to be more Kaiju/Jaeger battles?". Then the big battle near Hong Kong happened, and it was totally awesome, but they completely wasted Cherno Alpha and Crimson Typhoon by having them die in about 2 minutes. The final battle felt weak compared to the Hong Kong fight, and the movie had huge plot holes that just made no sense to me.

I never felt bored with Avengers, or found myself asking when something was going to happen. I loved the look and feel of Pacific Rim, but if you told me I could only own 1 movie, I'd pick Avengers.

I think Pacific Rim is a better made film - del Toro breathes a craftsmanship into his work that has been missing from Hollywood for a long time - but I think I have more fun with The Avengers. I absolutely love both to death, though. They're both incredible "I DIDN'T THINK I'D SEE THIS IN A CINEMA!!" experiences, one with so many comic characters at once, wowee; the other with Kaiju. Kaiju! In a goddamn Hollywood production! What a rush, man.

Pacific Rim, but only on a technicality and even then it's pretty close.

While I find Marvel/Disney's weaponized entertainment delivery system to be absolutely amazing, I don't subscribe to the idea that you should have to have prior knowledge of a movie's backstory in order to fully enjoy it.

Avengers is unique in that it's a stand alone film that is essentially a direct sequel to 4 other movies and if you haven't seen those other films (especially Thor) you're left in the dark on a lot of stuff.

While the argument could be made that a full understanding of Kaiju and Giant Robot shows/movies is required to fully enjoy Pacific Rim (Of course they waited to use the sword until the last minutes of the fight...that's the rule.) you don't have to have seen specific films or shows to understand what was going on.

I don't like walking out of films unless I find them morally repugnant. Even when they're complete garbage, I usually stay to see just how much worse they can get (see: The Invisible). If I'm going to be ranting about something later, I want to at least have all my bases covered!

And I didn't hate Pacific Rim. I even kind of liked some of the fight scenes. I just found it to be massively disappointing in light of all the hype. Worth renting to pass away an afternoon with your buddies? Sure. But not much more than that.

I really enjoyed Pacific Rim, it is a great film, but The Avengers is on another level. It's a classic of modern cinema and I have no doubt will be a contender for film of the decade.

Avengers. I liked the story better, the casting was excellent and everyone has their moments. Plus, it didn't have the "ALWAYS SHOUTING" Charlie Day. He literally ruined the movie for me. At least Jar Jar has an indoor voice.
