Manners are important. It's very easy to be casually thoughtless, but simple manners help keep that in check.

That said, if your original request was delivered as politely as you say it was, that should've been sufficient.

I get being polite, I really do. But 1) most ways to display respect were just made up for some reason anyway, and really don't meant anything more than "I'm socially obligated to do this." And 2) wow. Just... wow.

the people who make you say "may I" when you say "can I". For example, I asked if I could go to the bathroom, and I got a snooty "I don't know, can you?" And i was tempted to take a shit on the floor and go "yeah, I guess I can. thanks for helping me test that, normally people would get mad if I tried that anywhere else."

Heh, I was genuinely expecting people to actually try to counter it with "No! I really do hate people!". I guess I'm the one who needs to drop the misanthropic bullshit. Huh, this is almost a character-building moment.

I feel that, now that I'm reading my storyline after some sleep, I should add in some more details.

My group in college are the only ones that are forced to work in the project 15 block. This is where fifteen year old ASBO-wielding chavs are given the choice between going to college or community service. It's essentially an oversized creche for people who will never know what working feels like for as long as there is a dole office.

I think a lot of my problem here comes from this fact - I'm probably the first person in a week to attempt something resembling manners, and I get yelled at for it. It makes me wonder if I'd have got a better reaction if I'd walked in there and gone "Oi, open this fucking room for us!" - she'd be used to that.

Also, to everyone who have said that I should have said please and thank you... Depending on how much someone helps me, they can get a "cheers" all the way up to "Ah thanks! Yer a saint!" I don't know anyone who actually says "thank you" any more. Actually saying please instead of just indicating sincerity through tone and general speech, though? It doesn't actually make sense.

I say please all the time, cos I'm polite.
I don't know why. If you met my family you'd see how much we differ. Typical Yorkshire family right there!
I tell my niece to say please, it's common courtesy. But she is a little brat saying, "Get me a drink now."

I can tell usually between the people who are asking a genuine question, and those who are being complete dicks. I have yet to meet someone who is not a dick.

Of course i prefer straight-faced and polite request for help. "Please" and "Thank you" are just an added little bonuses - quite nice, but not in any way neccesary.
