Nope, they're still around. And if I'm asking for something that would explicitly benefit me, and would require them to go out of their way to help, I think that a please should be offered.

Why? What does the word "please" really do anyway?

I would much rather it be conveyed through a humble and pleasant action/tone, seriously, its the age old thing of actions over words.

A sarcastic please isn't really a please at all in my opinion. If the person that asks you to say it was really that bothered about it meaning something, instead of just following social 'norms', they'd see this. Someone saying something because they have to just devalues it.
Think about kids, when they're forced to say sorry. They'll say it and that means things're technically covered, but they don't mean it. So what was the point in making them say it?
It's the same thing here.

honestly though, if the question is delivered with a sincere underlying request for help, rather than taking the help for granted then I don't see the problem, "could I borrow you for a second" sounds a hell of a lot like please to me, so I don't see the problem with it!

On topic, the people that do that, for the most part, just enjoy being difficult because they're actually needed for something, and they want to make people jump through hoops before they'll relinquish that which they're withholding. It's an ego trip of the most basic kind: when the lowly, bitter* janitor working a thankless job has the opportunity to lord something over a privileged student, you'd better believe they're going to do it.

If you're not that close or familiar with the person, I think the informal tone of your request may have been inappropriate. She may have been offended that you wanted to "borrow her". That's a very casual and informal phrase which may have implied that you didn't think much of her as a person.

Who knows~ I probably would have appreciated a 'please' if I were in her position, but at the same time I don't think I would have cared If didn't get one.

"Please" is for children requesting to stay out late and for boyfriends who have been caught cheating. Please is not for adults. The OP REQUESTED that the door be opened, he didn't demand. I've gotta agree there, I do get tired with all the "Its cool to hate everyone" attitudes we get around here!
