I've always had an interest in the aesthetics of clockwork mechanisms, they are beautiful pieces of engineering but it seems like modern time pieces seem to lack the charm that older pieces possess. So, this Christmas, my fiancee bought me an amazing silver pocket watch (seen below), I love being able to see the innards of a watch, it isn't powered by batteries but instead must be wound every day, this makes the watch emnate the classic faster paced ticking sound. It isn't the most practical method of keeping time, but I think it's definitely the most pleasing way.

So fellow escapists, what do you think of pocket watches, do you think they're worth the effort? Do you think they are too old fashioned in this day and age?

Annnnnnd go!

I'm admittedly a bit of a sucker for pocket watches. I have one buried somewhere in my old room, silver with a gold stag emblazoned on it.
I wish I could find it.

I rather like the look of them. And I'm hoping to get one soon. They just seem to exude sheer classiness. Sure, they may not be very practical to most people, but dammit, they're too cool for me to care about that.

I have a battery-powered pocket-watch which I have attached to my suit waistcoat at all times, since I have to wear a suit quite often. I really do like the aesthetics of pocket watches though, and there's just something about them that harkens back to an older time.
Plus it always means you have a handy way to hypnotise someone on short notice. :p

Your fiancée is awesome!

OT:pocket watches represent style.
And I wish I had one.

A friend of mine has one, how I envy him >_>

She's quite pleased to hear that. Then I mention how I had to beg for it. That usually shuts her up.

I think that you would love to look up some skeleton-faced watches. I have one. It's awesome. And automatically winds itself as I move!

I like pocket watches, and I reckon they'll soon be coming in to fashion, if only in a small way. They're quite 'lookatmee!' after all (At least the uber shiny ones). It takes a certain way of carrying yourself to look good wearing one, I think.

I think they're a bit ostentatious and a bit gaudy. Keeping them anywhere other than a waistcoat pocket is just silly, as well.

I like the idea but they seem impractical, seeing as you can easily get a good look at the time from your wrist (if you're wearing a watch)

I like pocket watches because of how fancy and sophisticated they make (certain) people look. Plus they are often shiny, which I also like.

I don't own one, but they are pretty cool and I'd like one, I guess.

Well my good sir, I do indeed have a pocket watch, made from real silver which I have tested...some odd reason my mother gets rashes hin her hands when she holds "fake" silver =/

I do like a good old fashioned pocket watch, look nice and they work quite well.

This leads me to my other point. I like to keep my hands busy, so a pocket watch fills that role quite nicely.

It looks very similar to this, the coloring's just a bit different. I haven't checked to see if it's real silver or not, but either way I love it.

Why yes good sir, I do indeed like pocket watches.

I have a gold one that belonged to my late uncle.

Edit:...is that a pun? I didn't intend it to be.

Wow, that's a beautiful watch.

My dad threw away my first pocket watch a few years ago, and he bought me a new one the following Christmas. It's not the best-looking or fanciest one, but it's honestly the most thoughtful present he's ever given me. I can only carry it every once in a while, since women's clothing tends to have tiny/nonexistent pockets.
But yes, I like pocket watches. A lot. And seeing a thread about them totally made my day.

I would like one but I would feel a bit like a tool using one in case people think I'm just trying to be different, so I probably will never get one:p
