Poll: Poll: subbed or dubbed?

I really hate "American" dubbing, not specific to anime but when for example a Japanese person speaks and instead of speaking in English with a Japanese accent they have an American accent. I don't care if it is a "star" like Christain Bale in 'Howls Moving Castle', or whoever dubbed 'Infernal Affairs' with generic American as opposed to Korean accents, it just pisses me off.

just browsing thru escapist when i noticed an anime thread up. I havent watched anime in ages, but after seeing this thread it got me in the mood, so to speak, and I got started wondering whether fellow escapee anime watchers prefer subbed or dubbed anime.

myself, I prefer subbed, as Im an extremely fast reader, so I can follow the text and still keep pace with the animation, and also because watching the occasional dub has made me cringe and my insides curl with shame at the attemtep transposition of "wacky" japanese-ness into english and also because most (or at least as far as I've seen) mainstream dubs are heavily geared towards a child oriented audience.

I honestly see no problem with either one. Especially if there's a good English Dub, such as:

1)Hellsing OVA (That BEATS Sub anyday)
2)Bleach (Mainly because the jap makes Hitsugaya sound too much like a kid)
3)Chobits (basically anything with Crispin Freeman)
4)Full Metal Alchemist and Brotherhood Too
5)Soul Eater (Troy Baker as Excalibur!!!)
6)Cowboy Bebop!!
7)Dragon Ball Z (Because Goku sounds like a Goddamn Kid in the japanese version)
Plus the Japan version Can't do this!

8)I'm 50/50 about Naruto Shippuden though. All of the Akatsuki's Enlish voice actors are great and I mean FREAKING GREAT!!!
Plus the fact that They Got Nolan North to play Madara Uchiha. (The biggest Name in Video Game Voice acting as of now!!!)
The only problem I have with the English dub is that Disney XD ruined alot of the scenes with it's censors. But the good thing is that the English Dubs Uncut are online.
Maybe if Adult Swim would take over Naruto Shippuden I'd be happy. So in a Way I Prefer Subs over dub for Shippuden atm

Sorry for ranting but that Sub and Dubs are both good in my opinion

Whenever this comes up, I always want to ask people this question.

"Give me an example of a bad Japanese voiced anime?"


If your answer is "There aren't any", then this proves that you're not really judging the acting completely. Because there is no way in the world that it does not exist at all. Part of the judging process also should deal with understanding what is being said as well as how someone is emoting. Look at the original Resident Evil game. It was legendary in how horrible the acting was, but they never sounded bored or uninterested. If this was dubbed in Swahili in the same hammy overacting way, no one who doesn't know Swahili would know the difference.

Another popular argument is that since these were originally done in Japan, that leaving the original voices makes it authentic. That's a great, legitament point. Unfortunately, it falls apart when the anime takes place outside of Japan, but everyone still speaks Japanese. Are you really expecting me to sit there and watch a subtitled show about a Japanese doctor roaming through Germany, but no one he meets speaks German? Or how about the one about the Italian Special Forces fighting Italian terrorists in an Italy where no one speaks Italian? It doesn't make sense, does it? Until you realize that they did it to cater to the projected audience of the region that it was being shown to. So how can you not expect the ones shown in the predominantly English speaking regions of the world to do the same? I do, however, love the fact that "Blood: The Last Vampire" took the real world approach by having Japanese characters speak Japanese, American characters speak English, and the two main characters be bilingual. If you're going to hold on to authenticity as an argument, this is the only type of authenticity that I'll accept.

I look at the original Japanese dub on my anime DVDs as a passing interest after I watched the whole thing in my native language, not as a standard that any deviation will somehow taint no matter how professionally it is done. So I would rather sit through a bad anime dub than have to miss half of what's going on screen to read subtitles. Of course, I would want a great anime dub over either one.

Dubbed usually fails due to the difference in mouth movements of words said.
Sometimes the subs are just plain funny at the same time.

This exactly. It takes a lot more syllables to say the same thing in Japanese than it does in English, E.G., "Sayonara," four syllables, vs. "goodbye," two syllables. This almost always leads to the dub having additional words slotted in in order to match the mouth flaps, and occasionally results in Speed Racer syndrome, where everyone talks way too fast. Chun Li in Street Fighter II V is my favorite example of this.

Indeed! Just hearing his normal voice It still sounds like Alucard is there. Along with Itachi! God that dude just gets some of the most epic roles made for him.

Subbed, unless you're some kind of illiterate numbskull who's unable to read faster then a 10 year old you shouldn't have any problems with it and you get to enjoy any material as the source intended.
