I like Billy Talent and Rise Against too (although I'm starting to go off Rise Against), but I'm a bigger fan of stuff like The Bronx or Cancer Bats.

Classic and throwback only, and mostly US punk (and more evolved from the 80s DC punk scene rather than the SoCal punk scene). I hate the fucking Sex Pistols. Bunch of diva douchebags. Seriously, punk is a whole lot about principle. The Sex Pistols were/are frauds. I do love The Clash, though. No matter how big they got, they were still a great bunch of guys. Joey Strummer is a legend.

I like the Minutemen, Fugazi, Sonic Youth (I really consider noise rock a form of punk), Minor Threat, Black Flag (the very early stuff), Bad Religion, Husker Du, and that sort of punk. The Dead Kennedys were great too. Jello Biafra would go out of his way to help artists he believed in. Punk is a lot about the community that supports itself to me.

More recent bands I like are Ted Leo (he's been with a few bands. Right now, it's Ted Leo and the Pharmacists), No Age, Fucked Up, Titus Andronicus (holy shit, is The Monitor an outstanding album or what?)...

Edit: I feel like linking to a Titus Andronicus song because it is amazing.

Pop Punk is of course the mutant offspring of Punk and Pop, made to appeal to "hardcore/punk" Middle Schooler.
I guess I'm just a hardcore middle schooler then.

Chunk! No, Captain Chunk!, Veara, A Day To Remember, Four Year Strong, New Found Glory.

I don't know, man, all of this shit is much better than anything I've ever heard. I don't think its fair for you to say its for middle schoolers.

Music is a taste, don't insult people for liking what you don't.

Hardcore punk is really the only punk I listen to regularly. I enjoy such punk groups like The Dead Kenndys, Black Flag, The Misfits(Danzig era only), early Beastie Boys and the Bad Brains.

I'm more into Pop-Punk, primarily The Offspring's older stuff, Anti-Flag, The Unseen, and a few others, but I also like some classic and new punk.
I think I'm getting more into classic punk though, Pop-punk can get old after a while

Oh, and may I just say, thank you, thread, for making me feel not so alone with my constant "I swear punk isn't completely dead yet stop looking at me like I'm crazy" mantra? This gives me hope. <3

As far as pop punk goes, I do like some of it.

Usually I go for something that's more towards hardcore or peace punk.

Or whatever else that I am too lazy to categorize further.

Billy Talent and RA qualify as pop punk. A lot of what I listen to can qualify as pop punk as it's fairly popular for punk. NOFX, Bad Religion, a little Pennywise. If you want true new punk don't listen to your radio.

Ok, what I consider true new punk are acts like:

A nice ska influence in that one.

Gotta support my local groups
Didn't think anyone knew the have nots (plugging new album pride. =P ) Also you have folk punk:
Defiance, Ohio

Calm down.

There's quotation marks there for a reason.
I didn't say anything about you, especailly nothing bad.
But you can't deny certain music is geared for certain age groups.

Nice list too. Not neccesarily my top 6, but still good.

See, I disagree that that type of music is geared toward the ages you think they are. ever listen to The Wonder Years (The greatest pop/punk band ever. *opinionated fact*)? Definitely not pandering to a younger audience.

(In retrospect, I should have put TWY in my list instead of ADTR. I actually really dislike ADTR)

Neither of those sound like punk to me, so I guess "classic" is my answer.

I'm not really a big fun of punk, either way, because:

Well, look at people like Justin Bieber and NSYNC. They have been designed to apeal to young girls. Think about it, what do little girls like? Cute things. What do they find cute? Puppies. Justin Bieber is groomed to resemble a puppy, so little girls will want him.

I do agree with you that anyone can listen to anything, I'm not trying to be music Nazi. But there are bands that are aimed at certain people.

the problem with most of the punk you guys are talking about is that it's ALL pop punk. Punk isn't radio music. At least not in it's purest form. If you look at bands like Bad Religion, Rancid, and Green Day their first few albums were legitimate punk. Then one of their records got popular so the rest of their efforts had to get poppier and poppier. Ska for the most part is dead and mainly the bands that are still sticking around are by default the more popular ones (aka ones that ended up in Tony Hawk). Which is a damn shamebecause I love ska dearly.

For the real punk that maintains the energy of the originals without bending one way or another to get itself on a major label you have to look at local scenes. The main hubs for them are Boston, New York, and California but pretty much anywhere you go there's at least one group of 5 kids who are pissed off enough to pull it off. Here are some decent examples of current punk bands that are still recording and touring with their own hard earned cash:

The Pity Whores from Foxboro, MA (if you like them check out bands like The Queers and Tit Patrol)

http://youtu.be/dgkNoRpGWJ0
http://youtu.be/r1OqUk-mqN0

Brunt of It from Boston, MA/ Providence, RI (one of the last standing ska bands)

http://youtu.be/NyelRQFwq64

Generation Decline from Bremerton, Washington

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlXfAO4EHZs

Ashtray from California

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QZ7nAdjze4

World War 9 from NY/ NJ (note the lack of blowouts)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgxF5lrycKw

These are a miniscule amount compared to how much awesome music is out there that you guys might never hear unless you hunt it down. It's a shame but that's how it goes. But if you like any of these bands go support them. Some of them are on itunes but for those that aren't they have bandcamps, facebook pages, and if neither of those their myspace is still up (cuz that's all that's left there are bands) so if you want their music write them a message. You don't have to limit yourself to what's easily accessible.

Though honestly I still love pretty much all pop punk bands too with the exception of shit like Simple Plan or Good Charlotte. Sum 41 won me over a little bit but that's more of a guilty pleasure I guess.

Preachy lecture over.

Pop punk can be pretty good.
This is particular
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7RUeMCZL3Q
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4FFY8WqM70
Second has stronger garage influences

I just want to pause for a moments and mention that I don't think I saw anyone mention the Misfits. Which is a damn shame. (I don't think I saw Black Flag either, but I kinda doubt that since they're so popular). And Subhumans, they are great.

Also, Folk Punk is awesome because Andrew Jack Jihad is classified as that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xlwhku6Ss8&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VTUaarHjuY

YOU'RE WELCOME.

Garage music is also awesome, it predates punk but it's basically proto-punk, the roots punk has in it is *very* obvious. If you have a chance check out the Back From the Grave compilations.

I'm going through a surf phase so naturally I've been listening to a lot of surf punk as well. Which is delicious.

I just over answered your question. It's a bit more complex than "old, new, or pop"

Hardcore punk is where its at man.
the older bands such as Minor Threat, Black flag and Circle jerks are amazing or the newer bands such as Bane or Reign Supreme or Have heart to name a few.
