Proto-punk for me, The MC5, The Stooges, The Sonics, The Monks, The Velvet Underground, New York Dolls, and The Modern Lovers, throw in some genuine punk like Patti Smith, Television, Richard Hell and the Voidoids, and a bit of Hawkwind and Roxy Music for good measure.

Not voting for any of those, as I doubt any prefix is truly applicable. Punk was a reaction to the vapidity of pop, so pop punk is as oxymoronic as it gets
Not really. In fact punk, early punk is tremendously poppy. If anything it was a reaction to bloated self important "god musicians" spending months in the studio that was all the rage in the seventies.

Punk was simpler. It hit the do-over button, it was rock and roll as it originally was, just faster and grittier and more obnoxious. But it was still pop. Catchy infectious lightweight tunes. Just look at the Ramones, Buzzcocks, Blondie, etc... and there's nothing wrong with that.

Really "pop punk" is as old as punk.

To contribute to the thread, here are some truly awesome modern pop punk bands doing their thang that everyone should check out, you might dig it:

The Briefs!

The Cute Lepers (AKA The Briefs Part 2!)

The Exploding Hearts (RIP Exploding Hearts!)

I really, really want to like classic punk, but I'm afraid that I just don't think it sounds very good.
All of it?
Well, obviously I haven't listened to all of it, but definitely the huge majority that I've have heard.

.....obviously I'm pretty outdated on Punk Music. I knew it had mostly turned into Warped Tour stuff but I'm not recognizing any of the guys people are throwing out there.

As for the bands you listed OP, those sound the exact same to me. So it's Classic Punk all the way for me
