Since it is game related technically, then I really don't have an issue with it. Now if it was saying something like "BARELY LEGAL TEENZ READY TO BLOW!!!11!" that would be a different story...
This, basically. I really can't get that mad. Porn is a product like any other. Hell, this could even be seen as a step forward if the ads were a little more discreet, and weren't on a gaming site. Like someone else said, porn ads on a gaming site just make us all look like premature neckbeards. In the eyes of everyone else at least.
The point is porn is something they ban users for. But they have ads for it now. I mean, lets have an iota of consistency, yeah?
That's about the only thing that gets me. All I want now is for them to add an NSFW tag, so we may all begin making porn and sex related treads. And of course rewrite the rules accordingly.

I imagine that it was part of a package of ads and it was NOT supposed to be included. But wasn't left out on accident. I'd imagine they'll be gone within the hour.

might make me scared to visit escapist in public places.. which is when i usually am looking at it, so seems counterproductive to have it (assuming im not alone)

Well the problem is not exactly the porn ads, in so much as it is the scripts that typically run under porn ads and all the nastiness they bring with them. Malware and Rootkits and Trojans OH MY!

So one of two things happened.

1) The Escapist is a bunch of hypocrites who lie to their own employees about what they will or will not advertise or endorse. Referenced from Andy Chalks twitter feed where he explicitly states that he was told they would not have any ads to the sugardvd service.

Or

2) Someone done goofed much like Amazon did when they accidently advertised a H-game called Rapelay on their NA site or when Blizzard somehow advertised a gold sellin site on their website. If this is the case, a whoops we done goofed comment and a quick takedown of the ads and we're all squared away. The whoops part is very important. Keep that in mind Escapist staff. You may not have purposely messed up, but this is a pretty huge foul up anyway.

Of the two I'd put my money on number 2.

While I would prefer more pertinent advertisement, I think due to semi-recent events, most of us are aware that the Escapist is far from swimming in the big bucks, as it were. Even if you aren't aware, you've surely noticed the amount of ad space taken up by self-promotion. The Escapist needs revenue, and if porn ads is how they have to get it, then that's how they get it.

Hopefully they find more tasteful and relevant ads soon, but for the time being I don't really mind it.

You guys are freaking out over nothing for two reasons.

1) The ads aren't that bad. If there was anything showing then I'd be all for pulling out the torches and pitchforks, but the worst they show is a girl wearing a top that covers most of the torso. No big deal to me.

2) The Escapist probably didn't allow this. Often times they don't have full control over what goes into their ad space and when something unexpectedly sneaks in there, it takes a little bit to get it off. Example: The Vice ads (I think thats what they were) that showed inappropriate things a couple months ago.

I understand the rage is more for hypocrisy rather than what the ads show, but as point #2 states, the Escapist probably didn't approve of it and it will be removed shortly.

Hmmm I'm reading a comment about:

Adception????

OT: The Escapist has no morals, just look at their moderators.

It doesn't really bother me overly, but if I was some kids parent and saw this, well the escapist team should be ashamed of themselves. (I mean seriously that second girl is freckly as fuck, ewww).

I just love adblock, I really do.
Hope you like ban-hammers too buddy.

I do not give a flying fuck!

Ahem, the hypocrisy is absolutely astounding! You cannot advocate adblockers YET what does PubClub do? Blocks ads!

"That's right, silly forum user...you can't promote it, but if you buy the adblock we promote, we will give you stuff!"

Reminds me of part of a skit by this one comedian...

Yeah, no. Even as I type this, I see both SugarDVD ads on top and on bottom.

That's not hypocrisy, and you damn well know it. Unless you've entirely forgotten the point of ads.

Does anything even need to be said? You can't advertise pornography on a non-porn related site. I don't think there's any law against it, but it's still just fucked up.

I don't really care one way or another. I mean, I don't want to see the site become a haven for streaming sex-chat services or anything, but I like to think that by and large we're mature enough to handle some discreet advertisements. (Probably less offensive than what Evony used to run, at any rate...)

On the other hand, it makes a good excuse to join the Pub Club... :D

I'm really surprised this thread hasn't been locked. I thought that you were not allowed to criticize the escapist while on the escapist. Anyway, I dislike the add as it's contradictory to the forum rules. But then life's not fair, and so they can do whatever they want really.

I'm a Pub Clubber, so I don't see these. But still...awkward. And pretty contrary to what the site is all about. Did something go horribly wrong when selling ad space?

I mean, come on. Someone on the staff has to say something. This isn't a normal, "We have to have ads" kind of situation. It kind of flies in the face of what the site is all about.

Never get rid of those pictures. It could always be fun to break them out occasionally.

Let's see...

hypocrisy (n) - 1. the practice of professing standards, beliefs, etc., contrary to one's real character or actual behaviour, esp/ the pretense of virtue and piety

2. an act or instance of this

The point of ads is nullified when a business that claims to be public-friendly engages in ads that aren't. To be clear, I don't mind them making money - that's what they're supposed to do as a business; but when they pull crap like this, I'll call it how I see it, especially when they've banned users for doing what they are doing now.

Hypocrisy.

The porn ads? Hypocrisy, if likely accidental.

The Pub Club "Adblocker"? It's not an ad block, it's a full website makeover, so no, it's not hypocritical.

im torn. on the one hand..sure, why not? run whatever ads they want. its not like the majority of the people here dont look at porn. on the other hand, its a gaming website and seems pretty out of place
