It doesn't bother me that much, but I brought this website up during a break in class, and the teacher caught the adds and told me to go to a different site.

OT: I'm guessing it's just context-based ads, not any serious effort by the Escapist to advertise porn.
Though perhaps, through some partnership with SugarDVD, Pubclub members got a special discount...
No! Bad thoughts, smearyllama, bad thoughts!

Ironic that these ads are working VERY well since so many of us are talking about them in multiple threads :p

Pubclub members Assemble! Save the HD videos! and the marginal discounts for merchandise!
So, you're saying you turned down porn ads, to be able to look at giant ass videos?
If that's wrong, then I don't want to know what's right.

I'm not a very complicated man.
You're saying you prefer looking at giant crispy videos, and HTML5 videos, and to be able to access the website from a mobile phone, and get enormous avatars, and have bonus content and who knows what else. Instead of having porn ads.

You people are broken.

Yep. Don't see a problem with that. It is great HD.

I think that watching Paul Saunders in HD counts as porn by any definition. So yeah.
You! And you...make a very good point actually. But I don't know that, as I haven't experienced it. You may be lying to me.
Indeed, it is I! Is that something special?!
Trust me. It's worth every penny. Don't you know - he's <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lm6sUv0wImw>gorgeous!

Funny...that's the ad at the bottom of this page right now. Doesn't bother me at all...much rather see some eye candy than a UPS ad, doesn't mean I'm going to click on it but I don't object to it being there.
That's how content sensitive ads work. I seem on several sites I visit, just it's usually not porn that's either on the ad or the site. Some company or something managed to sneak this is in is all.

OT: I'm sure if people decided to directly tell the Escapist about the ads, they would take action much quicker than posting threads about it... if only there was a way to contact them directly, hmmm, no I don't that exists at all...

For now I'll just bask in my (temporary) pub club membership. *basks*

also, better than a shitty UPS logistics ad
Advocating adblocker is against the rules.

Prepare yourself for a warning.

You know daystar, I think the pubclub is actually missing out on this one, thanks to things like this:

Oh, save us from the evil porn banners! Won't someone please think of the children?!

An advertiser has obviously made a mistake somewhere. That's it. Cool yer tits, people.

Since it is game related technically, then I really don't have an issue with it. Now if it was saying something like "BARELY LEGAL TEENZ READY TO BLOW!!!11!" that would be a different story...

I thought I was one of the few people seeing that because of the cookies on my...
I mean, what is porn?

I normally don't like complaining about the ads and stuff like that on here. They pay attention. And the last time I complained about an ad, it got taken down almost imidately--remember the zombie nurse ad? And the Escapist could probably use the money.

If the Escapist is using the standard modern ad revenue arrangement, nobody has to click on the ads for them to get paid. In the very, very early days of ad banners, it was click based, but these days almost everything is on a page view basis; basically, the more people who go to a page on The Escapist that carries a given ad, the more Themis Media (the company that owns The Escapist, for anyone who doesn't know) gets paid for putting it up on the site.

This, basically. I really can't get that mad. Porn is a product like any other. Hell, this could even be seen as a step forward if the ads were a little more discreet, and weren't on a gaming site. Like someone else said, porn ads on a gaming site just make us all look like premature neckbeards. In the eyes of everyone else at least.

I'm a member of several groups, the last of which I just turned the chat notifications off for a week or so ago. It's a lot lower than it was before that; I've had up over 1000 unread messages in the past.

letter recetly written to moderators;
I just had a WTF moment. What's up with these sugarDVD ads? I understand that it's for a PS3 app thing so no direct link, but still. despite language i find this site to be mostly family friendly and PG-13. i leave this site open in my living room with my children sometimes. I'd rather not have these ads around.
Yeah i'm not okay with this. maybe i'm wrong i should password block this site, but that going to cut way down on my time spent here.

DID YOU HEAR THAT ESCAPIST? THESE ADS ARE COUNTERPRODUCTIVE. I don't really care about my web-browser and i don't like ad-block because i'd like my pageveiws to help the site out, but this may move me to firefox with an ad-block.

No no, I get the revenue model, but you're still looking at the same issue. Who pays attention to banner ads to inform their pornography choices?
I have no idea, but somebody must; it's not like banner ads for anything else are trustworthy either, aside from projectwonderful.com ads, which yes, are wonderful. And a good way to find new webcomics.

If you've never heard of projectwonderful, it's a company that sells ads with a different revenue model, where people bid for ad space, auction style. For some reason, it's almost exclusively used on and by legitimate webcomic sites.
