That does seem rather strange for a website that has caters to minors both teens and adults. Yeah yeah, PS3 streaming service whatever, but it's a PS3 streaming service for porn so little difference.

For you to think only "creepy neckbeards" find woman and sex attractive probably means you are being quite prudish as you suggested. It also suggests your thought process is driven by sterotypes.
I find women attractive most of the time depending on how they are present themselves/are presented, for example I do not find slutty poses attractive at all, quite the contrary. Likewise I do not find sex attractive to look at esp. how it's portrayed in most pornography. XÞ

EDIT: Fix'd since there've been those who've been rather nitpicky about my choice of words.

That's not hypocrisy, and you damn well know it. Unless you've entirely forgotten the point of ads.
Let's see...

hypocrisy (n) - 1. the practice of professing standards, beliefs, etc., contrary to one's real character or actual behaviour, esp/ the pretense of virtue and piety

2. an act or instance of this

The point of ads is nullified when a business that claims to be public-friendly engages in ads that aren't. To be clear, I don't mind them making money - that's what they're supposed to do as a business; but when they pull crap like this, I'll call it how I see it, especially when they've banned users for doing what they are doing now.

Hypocrisy.
The porn ads? Hypocrisy, if likely accidental.

The Pub Club "Adblocker"? It's not an ad block, it's a full website makeover, so no, it's not hypocritical.
Then explain THIS if you would be so kind.

The fact that The Escapist punishes those who advocate some form of adblock yet, sells their own form of it is both points of the definition of hypocrisy. The same goes for the ads. Again, I don't mind them making money - but when it involves two-faced tactics like this, I won't hesitate to call it out.

The Escapist can do better than this. Or at least I would hope so.

I'm guessing that the average age of this site isn't too far down into the lower 20s. I've never gotten the impression that there is any content catered to people under 17, and I'm kinda curious where you got it.

I "got it" from the fact that I've personally encountered many members of this site that were under the age of 17. ...or at least that's what their profile said.

I really do not like the ads. I don't really avoid going on the site when my screen is in plain view because sure it would be nerdy if one looked closely but it looks like a decent, reputable site even if it is for gaming. Reflecting what the site really is suppose to be.

But now there are porn ads.

I feel like they actively mocking and making fun of the community I am suppose to be apart of.

I do not like them. Ads are getting out of hand for this site.

Yeah, no. Even as I type this, I see both SugarDVD ads on top and on bottom.
I would think if you were going to go with one of Bill Hicks's skits on the hypocrisy of animadverting you would have went with the hypocrisy of sex in advertising:

Well isn't that basically a PS3 ad?
I mean it tells you what you can do with your PS3, yeah the outcome is pornographic but the ad has a sexy chick in it with PS3 controller in it.
I don't know if that can count as porn... Bu I doubt we'll get "real" porn adds on this site.

*sigh* Et tu, escapist? Can I go anywhere at all anymore without porn ads? Also I'm disappointed that it perpetuates the whole 'Video games is a boys club' thinking, which frankly is insulting to all of the female gamers and members of this site. It's extremely sexist. Shame on you, escapist.

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST

I reloaded, and it's at the top of the page, too! THE TOP AND THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE! THERE'S PORN ADS ON THE ESCAPIST NOW. Isn't that against forum rules??

I want some FUCKING ANSWERS as to why this is happening. I don't give a shit about the tits, but this is such a catastrophic level of hypocrisy that my eyes are physically bleeding right now. YES, THEY'RE BLEEDING, TIMELORD. THAT'S WHAT'S HAPPENING.

Answers NOW, or I guess it means we're all free to start posting as much porn as we want, right?

Fuck, this is so fucking stupid.
Thanks for summing it up.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

I am just going to say that there should be Equal Opurtunity sex ads here then if your going to do it right. Other then that, piss off Escapist, if I wanted porn I would just search it in Google.

I admit, your entry is better suited for this discussion than mine is. Though, as I read the OP, all I had going through my mind was "Those hypocritical bastards" and thus, the one I posted kinda was my default choice.

Meh - if the PS3 porn service wants to buy the ad space, then they are paying for our content. No shits do I give.

I'll just go back to not paying any attention to the ads unless they crash my computer (I'm looking at you El Shah... whatever it was called).

The ads have been replaced with different things entirely. It's not a traditional ad-block.

And if you call that hypocrisy, then you and I have nothing to say to each other.

I don't think there should be porn ads on the site, mainly because this just doesn't seem like the place for them. That said, the hostility being put forward by some is understandable but strikes me as a fine example of knee-jerk reaction.

The evidence we have so far is as follows:

There are porn ads on the site. This means either a decision was made to put them there, or they are not there on purpose. A lot of people seem to be assuming the former. As yet I see no reason to. If someone from the Escapist management were to come out and say that they are there on purpose, hostility may well be justified.

Until then it isn't. Oh, and according to Andy Chalk's twitter he was not aware that these ads were being run and was told when he did the article on the porn-in-your-PS3 thing that they would not be running any ads for it. It would seem we have more evidence for assuming that this was not something done on purpose than we do for assuming that it was.

In conclusion? Wait until we have more information before going batshit. If the situation then justifies batshittery, great, have at it.

Until then, wait patiently for a response and understand that the Escapist is run by humans, not robots.

Porn that I have to pay for? Preposterous!

Captcha: Hobby-horse.

Maybe there's a porn flick somewhere in that PS3 service that involves a hobby-horse...

To Google!

Ads exist for the sole purpose of revenue. Pubclub members pay for the privilege of not seeing ads, among other things. In other words, the membership fee replaces the ad revenue. Not hypocritical.

Key words here:

Not traditional? All semantics, nuances and pettiness aside, I would agree with this. However, the italicized still remains - "ad-block", and since it's still being used to divert ad attention, it still is, by definition, an "ad-blocker".

Still an ad-blocker. Still hypocrisy.

lacktheknack said:

Agreed. Agree to disagree, as the saying goes. I look forward to our next debate, good sir!
