Again, I must point out...wintercoat said:Ads exist for the sole purpose of revenue. Pubclub members pay for the privilege of not seeing ads, among other things. In other words, the membership fee replaces the ad revenue. Not hypocritical.CrazyCapnMorgan said:Then explain THIS if you would be so kind.lacktheknack said:The porn ads? Hypocrisy, if likely accidental.CrazyCapnMorgan said:Let's see...lacktheknack said:That's not hypocrisy, and you damn well know it. Unless you've entirely forgotten the point of ads.CrazyCapnMorgan said:Ahem, the hypocrisy is absolutely astounding! You cannot advocate adblockers YET what does PubClub do? Blocks ads!
"That's right, silly forum user...you can't promote it, but if you buy the adblock we promote, we will give you stuff!"
hypocrisy- 1. the practice of professing standards, beliefs, etc., contrary to one's real character or actual behaviour, esp/ the pretense of virtue and piety
2. an act or instance of this
The point of ads is nullified when a business that claims to be public-friendly engages in ads that aren't. To be clear, I don't mind them making money - that's what they're supposed to do as a business; but when they pull crap like this, I'll call it how I see it, especially when they've banned users for doing what they are doing now.
Hypocrisy.
The Pub Club "Adblocker"? It's not an ad block, it's a full website makeover, so no, it's not hypocritical.
The fact that The Escapist punishes those who advocate some form of adblock yet, sells their own form of it is both points of the definition of hypocrisy. The same goes for the ads. Again, I don't mind them making money - but when it involves two-faced tactics like this, I won't hesitate to call it out.DustyDrB said:I'm a Pub Clubber, so I don't see these.
The Escapist can do better than this. Or at least I would hope so.
See, the whole thing is over "adult movie" advertisements. Which, Orwellian not withstanding, is pornography.CrazyCapnMorgan said:The point of ads is nullified when a business that claims to be public-friendly engages in ads that aren't.

It's like the Meebo fiasco; the main thing that annoyed me about it is that it was a kind of ad that, in general, you only find on porn sites and other malware ridden parts of the internet. It made the place look disreputable, like the kind of website you would be embarrassed to be caught browsing in a public place. These ads are that times 10.Landrius said:I don't think there should be porn ads on the site, mainly because this just doesn't seem like the place for them. That said, the hostility being put forward by some is understandable but strikes me as a fine example of knee-jerk reaction.
The evidence we have so far is as follows:
There are porn ads on the site. This means either a decision was made to put them there, or they are not there on purpose. A lot of people seem to be assuming the former. As yet I see no reason to. If someone from the Escapist management were to come out and say that they are there on purpose, hostility may well be justified.
Until then it isn't. Oh, and according to Andy Chalk's twitter he was not aware that these ads were being run and was told when he did the article on the porn-in-your-PS3 thing that they would not be running any ads for it. It would seem we have more evidence for assuming that this was not something done on purpose than we do for assuming that it was.
In conclusion? Wait until we have more information before going batshit. If the situation then justifies batshittery, great, have at it.
Until then, wait patiently for a response and understand that the Escapist is run by humans, not robots.
I'm compelled to say that I don't think the point you make there does stand under the condition that the Escapist don't know about it and would not have done it on purpose. How can they be hypocritical when this wasn't their doing? As someone else said, ads aren't chosen by the Escapist. They contract to an ad company who chooses what gets on there.Screamarie said:Just because the porn is being offered on the PS3 doesn't mean it's actually gaming related.
It seems a bit hypocritical for the Escapist to allow these ads up whenever the users can't even really link to a picture of a tasteful nude. Don't get me wrong, I realize this could have just gotten sneaked in somewhere and that the people at the escapist don't necessarily want to advertise this...but still, my point stands.
More than that though....I'M SICK OF TITS! I am! I'm so sick of seeing boobs everywhere. Between ads and images from various video games, I'm just tired of skimpily dressed women showing off their tits.
Where's the sugarDVD ad with a man in his boxers? Equality people!
I'm afraid that I have no idea about the Meebo thing you're referring to, but if it was an ad-related thing like this I can see what you're saying I think. I agree with you; it does make this site seem disreputable. I don't want these ads here either.Owyn_Merrilin said:It's like the Meebo fiasco; the main thing that annoyed me about it is that it was a kind of ad that, in general, you only find on porn sites and other malware ridden parts of the internet. The mods don't have anything to do with it; certain staff members do. Really, this is just the latest (and one of the most egregious) in a long line of advertising problems they've had over the years. Usually it's because they go over the top with something annoying, but this isn't exactly out of the pattern for them. They were having a really hard time getting advertisers to sign up for a while, which is why they had funding problems that lead to several content creators, notably the Extra Credits crew, leaving, and also why they have a history of stupid but undoubtably lucrative advertisement campaigns such as this one.Comando96 said:........................... just no.
Is this site aimed at people who are under the age at which they can legally view porn? Yes.
Should a site aimed at people who are under the legal age at which they can view porn advertise porn? No...
Escapist... why are, or did you ever consider advertising porn... or did a Mod leave and this was his/her leaving joke?
Hmm... good to know. Unfortunately, that post was a joke about the kind of "articles" that nudie mags tend to carry, not an endorsement of the women in the ad. I mean, it was an article about fetishes, with ads for porn, on a gaming site for Pete's sake XDEvil Smurf said:the redhead is Faye Reagan, I won't tell you how I know.
