OP this has been done to death, mostly by people calling us with high post counts the scum of this site. Really I don't care about my post count, it just shows I'm quite an active poster.
Why would some of the most active members of the community be called the scum of the site? seems ridiculous to me.

(Also, sorry about the double post, I really wish quotes would notify in an edit but alas they do not)
Apparently we are somehow ruining the site.
Remember that outburst by that user that declared Furburt the worst thing on the site along with many other things? That has what set all this in motion, thus gaining us high posters a sort of morbid fame around here.

I'd honestly prefer it if there was no post count, but as it is, I ignore it completely and look for avatars/names to see if I know them.

I'd prefer a "forum level" system, where instead of post count your posts got rated (or something similar) and your collective score was shown instead.

Some people think we're just here to get a high post count and bask in its glory.
That seems silly, plus when they get a high post count I wonder if they would think the same way... and if you got a high post count and are respected it's obviously not from the post count alone. respect is something earned and not obtained through high posts, Like how I respect you and Neonbob for being awesome people and not for post counts.

I'll admit, when I was newer here, I did care about post count. And I tried to get it up faster than I should have.
As I spent more time here, the importance of that number faded. And now all I use it for is to judge how active someone is in the community.
At this point, I can honestly say that I don't care about it at all.
EDIT:

All joking aside, I just post whenever and whatever I feel like; plus the way Furburt and Neonbob cheated excelled on the post count is by spamming user groups.
Ooh. Close, but I got to 20K before user groups were introduced.
You can call me out on Forum Game participation, though :p

I raise it all the time because I've been gunning for the Neo badge for a little while now.

... and now I'm so close ... just days away ...

So basically, just take the post count number away, since there is a title under the username for every certain post count number.

Well Furburt was deserving of it from what I heard, just posting to gain a post count, but he changed.

It goes back to a time before I came along, Furburt was the one called out for being a post count whore

I've highlighted the bit you missed. It may change what you think you've read.

Today was the first time I stuck around 15 minutes longer so I could find something to comment on and get past the 100 mark. But up until now (and I suspect not until nearing the 1000) I didn't care about it.

that seems a bit mean, Furburt is an awesome guy and from what I have seen people with high post counts actually make the escapist a better place (Except for Max when he sort of turned in to an ass)

I'm saving post #5000 for a User Review. I still haven't decided which movie though. It will probably be one of the movies I'm gonna watch tomorrow at the theater but I may re-watch one of my DVDs instead. In any case, the earliest I'm gonna have my badge is Wednesday morning.

I only post when I feel like it. Although I have a thing for posting on these threads about post count. Oh well I'm happy with my amazingly low post count to time spent on forums ratio!

Max was a person who was with Neonbob as the people with the highest post counts on the escapist, he was here before I joined and was pretty cool but he turned in to an ass, starting a lot of arguments and got banned I think in december or november last year.

Well, to answer your questions individually:
1. I like seeing the little number go up slowly, because it gives me a sense of achievement, especially when I get a new title, but I don't actually care about how high it is compared to everyone else.

The only two things that I actually care about concerning other people's post counts are:

  • A) Does their post count affect how they behave?
    • If someone acts like they're better than me because they have a higher post count, then they can get lost, it's just a number. It shouldn't affect how you behave, it just shows how acitve you are, it shouldn't give you any sort of higher status over me, if my argument is wrong, then argue against my argument, don't use ad hominem idiocy on me.
    B) What is their joining date/post count ratio like?
    • Take Lambi up there for example: He has a very high post count in proportion to his joining date, and that is a little strange, but it tells me a little about him: He seems to have quite a lot of free time, he likes the escapist, and he is very active here.
While two of the three were confirmed in his post, the first one seems to only be obtainable by deductive reasoning, as many people are available to post at 4PM on a weekday, it's harldy unusual.
Anyway, that's my opinion on the importance of post counts, take it or leave it.

2.No, I don't though I may be a little more active when I near a milestone e.g. when I was nearing 5K, I posted quite a bit more than I naturally would, but that was only for the 100 or so posts before I reched it.

3. I post when I have an opinion relevant to the matter, or that I find is relevant to the matter, though in forum games, I will post because it's part of the forum game, or in an RP, it's for progression of the narrative, not because of my post count.

4.No, and there shouldn't be "forum gods" it's silly, just because they have a high post count, doesn't mean that they should be treated any differently than the rest of us.

5. See question one.
[sub]Actually, most of my arguments are justified in question one's answer.[/sub]

Also, this thread has been done many a time.

Yeah, Furburt is a cool guy.
I think it was the sort of fame he had for being wrathed so much.

And Max wasn't an ass at one point?
I must not have been here for that phase.
