Poll: Posting 'first' comments

After browsing some articles on here, Cracked.com, and even the BBC, as well as watching Youtube vids, I've noticed a startling prevalence of people who post first on many different things, and I wound up having an argument with a former housemate about it, where he defended it, but it's something I find annoying, and I have no idea why people do it.
Yahtzee brought this up a few weeks back on what I think was the Hunted: The Demon's Forge review with a voice that conveyed similar disgust as the voice he used to hate the game in question.
What I really want to know is 'WHY?'. Also, what you think of this irritating phenomenon, hoping that this hasn't lead your opinion.

It's stupid and pointless for sure.
In truth it doesn't really hurt anything. It's just dumb. I don't get why people do it either, other than the fact it's a 'thing.'

It seems to me of those things people could do to that's interesting when someone interesting happens.

But it's been worn out by people doing it when nothing interesting happens. Now it doesn't mean anything anymore. And therefor nobody likes it.

OT: It seems like the most pointless thing one could possibly do. However, it doesn't really affect me in any way, so I just ignore it. If they find posting first fun, well... good for them!

I only wish I was as easily entertained.

Yes, it's an extremely stupid thing to do.
It's like wearing a sandwich board that says 'I am a tosser'(I hope the mods don't disapprove too strongly of that)- you COULD do it, but why would you want to- you don't achieve anything and just label yourself for rational people to dislike.

There isn't really a challenge or any point in being the first comment and vocalizing that. People can clearly see you are the first to comment, and depending on how the comments are ordered, most people will never see it. The real challenge is being last.

I find it stupid, but really, what the hells, I don't care. I don't get offended by it, or even particularly annoyed, and seeing them get warnings is funny as hell So meh.

I don't really understand it. You don't get anything from being the first comment...and also, in posting in the first place, people can clearly see that you're the first to post. Although most first posts say nothing more than 'first' rendering them utterly useless, thus, the second post should henceforth be considered as the first.

I've said first too much.

I do find it pointless but it doesn't matter to much. It doesn't take up that much room and it's pretty easy to learn to just skip over them without thinking. its when people start going on about being second and third that it starts to get real annoying.

The only time I will except it is if they then follow up with their actual comment.
If your commenting just to say first then please get out of my internet because your just taking up space. I vaguely understand it on the more popular videos because then everyone is commenting at once and it's a bit of an achievement to get the first spot. It becomes idiotic on the small videos that get about 100 views a year.
Overall though, still stupid. On the same line of intelligence as simply commenting a quote from the video.

I've never really understood it, I love The Escapist mods pulling people for it. It doesn't do anything, except taking up space on the page

I always drew a parallel between it and caring about who was prom king/queen after high school(hell even after prom for that matter).

Here on the Escapist I give them the report and move on treatment. Such a waste of space.
