Pointless and annoying, I'll go for. Thankfully, it gets you a warning, on here.

I think I used to do it but it was seldom ever. Plus I would have been <14. Back in the day and all. ;P Though my reasoning would have been following the trend as opposed to attention seeking or the like.

Anyroad, I said "Yes, it's childish" because... well, it's silly, isn't it? Then again, it is only a bit of harmless fun really. Though I'm indifferent SO LONG AS it's stated alongside a related comment to the video, thread et cetera. IE, in the same regards that one word/phrase responses are forbidden on forums, if that makes sense.

Overall though, still stupid. On the same line of intelligence as simply commenting a quote from the video.
In that case, I'd rather they commented "First!", "Second!", "Third!" and what have you!

Twenty-fifth!

Does it harm you? Do you have to read it? Does it take a long time to skim over? It is incredibly harmless, some guy having fun for an incredibly stupid reason, and it's not hard to ignore.

It used to get you an instant ban. Oh how I long for the days of yore...

While harmless at first (hurr hurr) most people on video content threads do it to reserve the first comment, so they can add their opinion on it after and still be the first commenter.

First just for the sake of it = mildly irritating and quite frankly redundant, we know that person is first by virtue of having the first comment.
First to reserve a high spot = obnoxious practise, and quite sad.

the real difficulty in most cases is getting last.

edit: your not the ... first ... person to mention it.

I know we're on a forum and responding as such might be considered herasy, but so what? Here's the thing. There is an incredibly small number of people who are going to be swayed by the first comment. Either they came just for the article or OP statement or they came for the thread. Either way, the first comment, that epic reserved space, is only going to sway maybe a percentage of peoples coming to the conversation, and those are people who don't have a very high interest in the topic anyways. So what if those people don't read it? The people we want to hear from will move past that first comment.

Like those games in the Games Forum, "last person to post on this thread wins!", I've locked the threads before and won the game! YAY for abusing mod powers!

LOL chill out dude, your allowed to discuss it and disagree with opinions and rules, just don't break them yourself.

I frequent another forum where you are allowed to say "First", but it quickly got knocked on the head when the entire active users descended on the sinners with vengeance and fury!.

Your right about the small percentage part though, not to mention lets say in a thread like this 2 out of 50 people agree that people should be allowed to say "FIRST" then that only 4% that are for it, hence the minority.

I wasn't going for an annoyed tone, just making a joke.

I'm notiing that more and more lately. A lot of people seem to get really annoyed by incosequential things. Might just be because I have a lot of siblings, but I don't get why it's so hard for people to ignore. Hell, we ignore people in reality whenever we walk down the street, why not on the intrawebs?

Thats another thing, I wasn't sure if you was raging or not! anti raging at the rage of "Dirty Filthy Firster's" (I've copyrighted that btw).

Yeah I agree about the whole "act differently on the web to real life", I guess people see Dirty Filthy Firster's are queue jumpers at Disneyland, spoiling it for the people who've stuck to the rules, or if their isn't a rule about that in place, its seen as poor etiquette.

The way I see it in real life and on the web is "its easier to not do something than it is to do something", so don't break the rules, although being a total hypocrite that rule is reversed when you see someone do nasty shit and you stand idly by. That wasn't OT, just a general view... which makes me look like a hypocrite! :D

I don't really care. I'm happy that it gets mod wrath on the Escapist because it's pointless, but it's not as if I get outraged by it or anything.

I rather enjoy seeing it because it ALWAYS results in someone replying with this lengthy comments about how the "First" people are just annoying everyone and how childish and stupid it is. Of course, by doing this and instigating the subsequent argument, the person doing the chastising has done more damage than a simple "First" ever could.

Also, in terms of why, it's just a victory. It may be a minor and silly victory, but it can be a surprisingly satisfying one.

Hey look, I ignored the content and jumped immediately to the comments to get your attention with my all caps and my claim to fame with "FIRST"! ADORE ME!

Here on the Escapist I give them the report and move on treatment. Such a waste of space.
^^ this

I feel it is just a stupid attention ploy from people who feel they don't get enough attention already. I'm not a fan of attention whores.

I really don't understand it, I guess it's just that people are sheep and just do it cuz everybody else is doing it. It doesn't bother me much, I just feel sorry for them and move on. At least I have the privilege to ban the people that do it on this site.
