I just saw this:
http://www.gametrailers.com/news/l-a-noire-pre-order-incentives/3066

To summarize it up here:
Pre-Order with GameStop to get The Naked City Vice Case & Badge Pursuit Challenge
(Also available via Game in the UK, and GameStop in Canada)

The Naked City Vice Case
In this bonus case from L.A. Noires Vice Desk, detective Cole Phelps investigates the supposed suicide of a stunning fashion model. Can you help Cole unravel the truth in a city blighted by drugs, corruption and greed, where the death of a beautiful woman is never as straightforward as it seems?

The Badge Pursuit Challenge
Hidden around L.A. Noires beautiful recreation of 1947 Los Angeles are 20 police badges to find and collect. If you can find all 20 of these badges, the dapper Button Man suit will be unlocked which provides extra ammo for all weapons. Each badge also provides 5 additional XP which will help further unlock Intuition Points ? special credits that can be used to give Phelps a key investigative insight when you need it most.

Pre-Order with Amazon to get The Broderick Detective Suit
(Also available via Amazon in the UK, and Amazon in Canada)

This unlockable detective suit boosts your fist-fighting capabilities and resilience to damage. Throughout L.A. Noire while working cases, youll encounter quite a few suspects and persons of interest who prove to be resistant to arrest. Your hand-to-hand fighting skills will be called into action on these cases ? the Broderick suit with its enhanced fighting abilities may be that edge in helping make that collar.

Pre-Order or purchase at launch (while supplies last) with Wal-Mart to get the A Slip of the Tongue Traffic Case
(Also available via Play in the UK, and Wal-Mart in Canada)

A Slip of the Tongue is a bonus case from the Traffic Desk in which a seemingly run of the mill car theft ends up sparking an explosive investigation into the largest auto fraud racket the city has ever seen. With the stolen cars piling up and questionable characters at every turn, can you help Cole Phelps crack the biggest case so far in his career?

Pre-Order or purchase at launch (while supplies last) with Best Buy to get The Sharpshooter Detective Suit
(Also available via Zavvi in the UK, and Best Buy in Canada)

The Sharpshooter unlockable detective suit enhances your aim with rifles and pistols. Always a worst case scenario for any detective working a case, there are of course those occasions for Cole Phelps when pursuing a suspect escalates to gunfire. In these tense shootouts, the Sharpshooter suit provides that extra aiming precision to take the criminal down.

Also, its worth pointing out that everyone in North America who pre-orders their copy through the Rockstar Warehouse will receive an official L.A. Noire tee-shirt while everyone who pre-orders with Target will receive a $5 Gift Card, and get a free Rockstar Games t-shirt if purchasing the game in-store during launch week. As you might suspect, all incentive offers are limited in quantity and available while supplies last.

So basicly there is a lot of content that the players will not be able to try, and the worse its that some of them arent just superficial stuff, like clothes, some of them are actual missions (and since this game goes around solving cases one mission seems like a big deal to me, its not just another mission to kill X bad guys in Y place).

Even the clothes have special atributes.

Some games are doing this kind of stuff and it just sucks, I dont know if the game is any good (it looks VERY good but it may suck) so I am not going to pre-order it, even if I buy it on day 1 after hearing good stuff about the game I still get penalized,
So what do you think?

I like it.
It is an incentive for the consumer to buy legitimately.
Now we just have to hope they don't plug on DRM or something.

Awesome. I've had it on pre-order from day one with Game so it's nice to see that I get a bonus. I was hoping for a nice box and book of artwork but I can't exactly demand that for just pre-ordering. It's nice to get something extra with a game whatever it is.

Thank you Team Bondi and Rockstar.

It's only available on PC3 and Xbox which as far as I'm aware doesn't use any strange DRM. Besides, when was the last game published by Rockstar to have troublesome DRM?

I definitely feel I've missed out if I, for whatever reason, can't get a game on release, with all the pre-order additions, but it doesn't bother me too much. Besides, for games I'm really interested in, I'm usually on top of pre-ordering them, thereby getting all the content with it.Although, if I'm interested in a game, but would also like to know how it's being received, it

They're not exactly evil. Even if some of the bonus pre-order content is kinda superfluous, it doesn't cost any money to pre-order the regular editions of games and, if you do, you're guaranteed a copy at launch and (at GAME in the UK) you get double reward points, which is a great incentive

GTA IV having a conniption (later resolved through patches) by falsely detecting no-cd/non-legitimate copies.

So long as it's single palyer content but not substantial I don't see the issue. Anyone who actually cared enough that they want the content probably as the preorder in and if you don't have the money... well, life continually proves it sucks not to have money.

When I call bullshit is if it is going to be competitive multiplayer advantages, I think that is just unfair. The preorderer(er) will already be really into it in the first place so just sticking an extra boot into the people who weren't there for day one is unfair and counterproductive.

Now I'll just go back to waiting for March 11th and my Signature edition of Dragon Age 2... It's so fucking far away!

OP: Just also thinking about people; Solid real incentives (artbook, action figure whatever) or digital abstract incentives (missions, in game items and the like). I prefer the digital stuff.

I generally don't mind pre-order incentives, it's typically something rather silly and superfluous. Like special costumes or some exclusive gun that doesn't make a difference. If it were something big, like parts of the story or something, then I'd be a bit put off.

Its not that they are evil but I still feel like it shouldnt be in this way, I dont whant to get a diferent content depending where I buy it, I would prefer to simply have it all on the disc or at least release it as DLC so that people can choose if they want it or not. In this way I can only choose one and get less content.

Oh, well I got GTA4 really late and even then it was through the XBL Marketplace so I was unaware of that. At any rate I would think that the game will be relatively DRM free. By which I mean that it won't have Ubisoftist DRM.

I'm not one to generally pre-order, mainly cause I'm much more likely to wait till the game drops in price or goes on sale, but I do like these incentives. Gives fans a reward for being a fan. Gives different people different places to shop. Gives couples or friends reason to buy from different places. Gets people to support the game before even finding out if it's any good or not.

So in short, supports fans, retailers, and the gaming industry. Win, win, win.

Well...I pre-ordered Portal 2, and got Portal for free, which I didn't already have on the PC. So, yeah, I thought that was a pretty sweet deal.

Depends on some of the content really. A lot of it is silly stuff like look different or minor upgrades, or an extra minor in game item. Bioware seems to be the best about it packing in $20 add on/DLC packs for free for reserving, or buying their game within a certain time frame like both the dragon ages and mass effect 2.

They're good for gaming, not good for gamers. Pre-orders bring in money, but the incentives are annoying for gamers since you can't have them all.

Those exact things have been driving me crazy, I don't mind small pre-order things like say that one random little pistol in dead space 2, or even day one DLC, but all this exclusive high quality stuff that were not allowed to ever see if we don't pay them ahead of time is driving me nuts.

I'd like that, too. Make all the different bonus things available to anyone if they want to pay for it, even after release, but give them to people for free if they pre-order. I don't mind at all if people are rewarded for pre-ordering a game, but I don't like being penalized for not pre-ordering it or for pre-ordering it from the wrong place. I finally got sick of crap like that after one too many games I bought turned out to suck, so I pretty much don't pre-order anything anymore and wait for reviews.

Different bonuses depending on where you buy stuff piss me off even more. I stopped tolerating that when some album I wanted had half a dozen different versions, each with different bonus tracks, depending on whether you bought the MP3 version or a physical CD and where, and there was no way to get all of them without spending $80+. I ended up buying none of them, because screw that.

Pre-Order bonuses are exactly that. Bonuses. I support them, yeah, the collector in me wants everything, but it's not like it's costing extra to get those items, since all the money goes towards the purchase anyway. And usually (ME2 not withstanding), they give such small bonuses that it's not like you are going to miss out on some gameplay by not having them.

From what I've seen of other pre-order bonuses (for other games) they generally come out on XBL for purchase as downloadable content within a few weeks/months of release. So its not totally denied to you, you just have to pay and wait for it.

Imagine if Citizen Kane had a few extra scenes that you could only see if you saw it the first weekend it was out. Imagine if the Family Guy DVD only came with a director's commentary if you bought the DVD early.

Preorder bonuses are a way of saying with certainty that the media in question will only be popular on the day of its release, and that it's worth forgetting about afterwards. 5 years later, some magazine picks up an old copy and says "You know, that was a great game! Let's get people interested again!" Doesn't work, A. because the DRM servers will have shut down, B. because part of the content is missing since no one had it preordered.

Do you know what Team Fortress 2's proportion of purchases were, between day 1 and day 1,037? Kinda skewed towards late buyers.

I have no problem with pre-order incentives. What I hate is when different stores have different things, which means nobody gets everything.
