think you left out the female option...

to me it really does not matter, if it's scripted to be one or the other it's fine as it's written to fit for that gender..

If it's one where you get a choice, I try both genders and see which one " fits" better

It should be there.... I had 3 options in the polling setup. Originally had 4 but then realized that there isn't really an "Other".

Depends. When it's WoW. I play my gender (female) and just turn off all the voice options, on other games I sometimes choose to play the male because the female voice used fills me with uncontained rage. Her high-pitchedness searing through my earhole like a misguided bullet-drill.

When I was new to WoW I seriously considered stopping because I didn't yet realise I could stop my stupid avatar saying; 'Inventory is full' 'I don't have a target' 'Too far away' ''

I tend to play both 50-50, but I'm currently on a female-character spree.

I tend to choose female if I have the choice if for no other reason that no such choice had existed for much of my time playing videogames.
I didn't have the option in Fable but now it is there in Fable 2. It still isn't there in the single player Grand Theft Auto game modes (maybe it would cause a scandal if there was equality in the dress-up mode...pardon, 'clothing customization mode' if it were identical to that which was in GTA: San Andreas) but Saint's Row 2 had it. I play through with both genders by the time I'm done with a game, anyway, especially if it has unique love story side-quests for each gender. Carth Onasi doesn't swing that way.
Maybe when female characters are common place, I'll just go for whatever suits me best for my playstyle or sheer aesthetic value. When that day comes, if there is an option to play Indiana Jones in Tomb Raider, I'd likely take it without hesitation. He's the better character, after all.

I prefer playing as female characters. I just happen to think that a strong female lead is more compelling.

Male usually, for some reason it always feels weird and awkward to try and play a female.

I donnow, if I had to quantify why I guess it's because most of the time the developers are too lazy to rewrite most of the lines for the opposite gender, and characters tend to be written male.

The end effect is that it often feels like I'm playing a woman, who use to be a man, having just had her surgery [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex_reassignment_surgery] recently, and despite the requisite period of psych-therapy beforehand still doesn't quite have down to pat the whole 'Don't sound like a dude' thing. :-/

I guess then the short answer is that in the games I play circumstantial Bad Writing(TM) makes the character sound weird.

To me, it depends entirely on the quality of the player model, appearance etc...
If i'm going to spend any great deal of time looking at, and interacting with others, via this character, I want it to be something I wont get sick of looking at.
(Or as a games designer myself... something I wont get sick of looking at the errors and areas for improvements)

Though typicaly, being a guy, I'll pick a male character first

I'd prefer a women if she weren't so off-putting i.e. I really like the Tomb Raiders for their exploration, but Lara's body often distracts me. So I'll play Ico or Shadow of the Colossus instead.

The same with Dead Or Alive. Well made game, but I feel the overly sexual characters in a way undermine just great a game it really is.

I would like to see more female main characters with some actual depth.

It mostly depends on the game. If it's an RPG, I will most likely choose female. It's nicer to see the opposite gender if I have to stare at them all day.

Other than RPGs, it usually doesn't matter to me.

I prefer a female character, always have, and most probably always will.

Must be a freudian thing.

Quickly now, i haven't got all day, i need a good original female name to use, i'm not terribly creative when naming characters (excuse the fact that no one else on the net has the same name as "zeeky_santos". i mean female names)
TIM!
Wait... Dammit, now I can't think of anything but Tim!
Bob? No, that doesn't work either. Uhm...
Madame Lovely. Yeah, that works.
