Poll: PS3 Price Drop

Considering that Sony's Platstation 3 hasn't been performing so well on a sales standpoint, the question could easily be asked as to whether or not Sony has planned any method of trying to fix this particular problem. Specifically with a price drop. Sadly, no one knows for sure, and if so, when, but we can always speculate, can't we?

Sorry if this has been done before, I don't think it has been, as I did search and all I found were articles about price drops which occurred ages ago. However, regardless of whether this has been done before or not, I'm almost guaranteed that someone will bring to my attention that I have no brain, and that this has been done many, many a time.

I certainly hope there will be, I'd like a PS3 for Resistance and MGS, but I'm not going to pay for all that money for only a few games. I hope there will be a price drop, but I doubt Sony will have one.

I personally think they've put too much longevity into the console, chucking in hardware that is far too expensive to manufacture. Microsoft has allowed enough time for capital costs to drop and become a bargain investment, Sony entered to late with over-developed tech.

I assume they thought people had disposable income to throw at home entertainment, with the advent of Microsoft Media Centre and hoping the DVD would go the way of the VHS. But with the current climate I doubt they'll be able to compete, at least for for awhile, especially with their Asian trump card (JRPGs) making their way to the 360.

They put in all this technology and it gave us nothing. The graphical capabilities of the 360 and PS3 are pretty much on par with each other. The PS3 has an advantage in physics calculations and the like, but otherwise there are no real improvements over the 360. The Cell processor simply wasn't made for games.

Their switch to Blu-Ray was a double edged sword in my opinion. People bought the PS3 as a blu-ray player, thus the games never sold very well. That of course changed with MGS4 and LBP. Considering how long it's taking for the PS3 to make its mark on the market, Sony lost out on the PS3.

There should be a price drop, but I don't see it coming soon. The (illusion) of the PS3's high price point is detrimental to their sales, but they can't exactly sell at more of a loss by dropping the price.

They will eventually drop the price, but not anytime soon. Atleast that's what I think.

I am hoping the price will drop sometime soon, because I would love to get Little Big Planet and try out resistance two. However, I am not going to pay $400+ for one and THEN the games' prices on top of that. If they lowered it (and hopefully damn soon), then maybe.

As for when it may drop, I do not know. But one thing is for sure -- they cannot continue to sell well forever. Sooner or later they will have to price drop, when that happens is unknown though.

They should be dropping the price this year, and a decent amount of time before Christmas at that, mainly because Blu-Ray players have now dropped to $200. Prior to this, you could buy a Blu-Ray player, or a Blu-Ray player that played games for an equal cash outlay. Last year, the game playing capability was a $100 premium over a unit that was only a player, which isn't too bad a premium for anybody who was in the market for a console at the time. But half the price is too much of a price delta, especially when that's enough to get both a Blu-Ray player, and a different console.

So yeah, they do have to make a price drop this year. Well, they don't *have* to, but it would behoove them to do so.

Honestly it's not that costly any more, people are just whiny complaining idiots.

It was $1000 over here, $1000 on launch! Don't you DARE complain, that $400 is to much. It's not, you've paid for more. You wanna pay 'To much' come to Australia or go to Sweden, THEN you can pay to much, until then keep quiet cause you know JACK about something costing to much money.

Chances are they could drop it to the $200 and there would still be a group of whiny fucks who would complain about the price.

Believe me, I know that the PS3 isn't as grotesquely overpriced as it was on launch, or what it is/was in Aussie. And, chances are, there is not going to be a price drop, because Sony is already losing an average of $50 dollars p/unit sold. A price drop simply isn't logical. Even if they were to drop the price to $150, the average price of the Xbox 360, Sony is still losing of 50%. Omni, I can't imagine living full time in Aussie, everything is expensive (including gas prices, though I'm not sure how those have been doing in the last few weeks, it's always obscenely high), and, most times, overpriced.

You're right, regardless of how low the price were to be dropped, undoubtedly, hordes of people would still find something to complain about. However, I like to believe that us here on the Escapist have a little more dignity than that.

And once again, quite waving your economic stability in the faces of all us dirty, gutter dwelling North Americans. Though it's a wonder you haven't gone into recession, due to the prices on certain products.

I'm not saying it's a good idea, but if they want developers to start really getting to grips with the guts of the PS3 and proving it's worth then they are going to have to take away the PS2 and getting devs out of that comfort zone.

I'm getting a bit fed up of complaining about the PS3 'high price'. You pay for what you get. If you bought the highest spec 360 (which doesn't compare technically to the PS3 - this is leading I apologise if it starts a console war), it'd cost more
The sales in the lifecycle of the PS3 are comparible to be 360 over the same period.

I think what SONY needs to do is advertise. That's what would sort out all this stuff.

That said, a price drop would bring round a load of people who are fixated on the 'high price' and more gamers for developers to sell to.

Oh yeah, I've read it's happening around April.

I'm aware of this, and believe me, I have no problem with the price. I recently got a raise and this like this aren't as dire to my wallet as it once would have been. Keep in mind that the PS3 has already dropped to about 50% what it was at launch. I plan to buy one regardless of what price it is, simply because you're right: You get what you pay for. This poll was merely a beast of curiosity. Simply speculation as to whether or not SONY was going to drop the price or not. This is not a thread designed to house whiny little children who are too busy begging their parents for other expensive things to realize just how powerful the PS3 actually is on a technological standpoint. I've been carefully overseeing this poll and I don't believe anyone has been openly complaining about the price. Everyone here has simply been voicing what THEIR opinions are, and, considering the North American economy's current condition, there is truly no harm in that. And I believe you're correct (if there will be one), the common consensus believes that the price drop will happen (again, if) around March or April.
