A while back, the PS4 was announced, bringing much joy, but also much gnashing of teeth. Now that we've had a while to think critically and various experts have weighed in on its potential, what does everybody think of it?

I'm cautiously optimistic. I'm not going to pick it up on launch, because I've found it's never worthwhile to get a console near the beginning of its life-cycle, and there is still plenty of time for things to go wrong, but I'm overall pretty excited. The specs look pretty damn good, and the overall developer reaction to it seems to be really positive. Plus, I really like the fact that Sony is focusing on core gamers as the primary audience for this system, which sounds like the right way to go about things to me.

Still, I'm going to have to wait until this E3 at least until I form a more concrete opinion. Microsoft still has the chance to pull something unexpected (although I honestly don't have high hopes for their next system), and like I said, there is still plenty of time for Sony to screw something up.

I'm still hesitantly looking forward to it. I don't really think there's been much feedback since the launch that really means that much. A developer seemed to be way too optimistic about it's power (although was probably talking about the fact that even the majority of people who play PC games don't actually have a gaming PC) and then a hardware provider who used to have a deal and wouldn't make terms this time around slagged off the hardware of their rival who did make that deal (but probably had useful info on pricing).

It all seems to balance out and be opinion stuff and fluff, there are lots of opinions from lots of directions and it all sort of waters out. Until they release a price and the Xbox specs I can't imagine my opinion will change too much.

Really I still am perfectly happy with them not screwing up too much. My TV is too small for any graphical advances to mean much (higher resolutions standards = text too small to see :( ), if it's fairly cheap, not too radical and has devs on board without being noticeably different from it's rival, things will turn out well.

It's nice that it's not gonna always require an Internet Connection, but it's gonna be very expensive at launch, and it doesn't have anything I want based on what I've seen. Maybe when some good stuff comes out, and it drops in price, then sure I'll buy. Until then, I'll stick with my WiiU and Xbox 360.

It looks interesting, I will not be considering getting it near launch though. Both times I have bought a console at launch its been a bad decision, I will wait for the game library to grow a bit first and might rethink 12-18 months in.

Well I've never bought a Playstation before, I'm not really sure why I would start now. I wish Sony the best of luck with their new upgrade.

I was one of the people who was super excited, and then I saw the press conference...

I just don't understand how they could screw up this much. I didn't see one, not ONE single remotely appealing thing. Tech demo after tech demo of things that looked lukewarm at best, social media shlock and one or two of the trailers were old. Fattening up the once near-perfect PS controller for a touchpad they will never make use of. Then there were the speakers. The entire thing came off as a pretentious, artsy fartsy developer circle jerk, which only compounded my disappointment with everything else. The only rise I got out of the entire show was Killzone, but that was before the terrorist bomb went off. Seeing the first glimpse of that game gave me the false impression shooters were going to once again give us interesting and unique settings and sights! ...But it quickly degenerated into just another brown war shooter, visually similar to what we can have now. Yawn

It's just really sad because the PS1, PS2 and PS3 are my favorite consoles of their gaming eras. Oh well, after the Vita I shouldn't have expected them to even deliver a home console anymore. I guess I could maybe buy one and play my older games on it until something of interest eventually.... what? Oh, oh that's right.

I've been doing PC gaming exclusively for years now, so the newest salvo in the War of the Consoles does not bother me in the least.

I did play some of the uh, whats the game with the helghast again?
God it was awful. Felt just as peanutbuttery as the earlier iteration on the ps2.
And there will be a new one for sure. sqee?

I'm excited that we are finally having x86 consoles.
It will be great for improving PC game quality now that devs are effectively programming for a single architecture across all platforms.

So far I haven't seen anything I like about it. Yes, we have seen some specs, we have seen that games can run at the same level as PC games. Backwards compatibility is a shame, but I understand it unlike what seems to be the majority bitching about it.

The problem is that the best specs in the world doesn't make a console. It could be that the Just Cause developer were right abut the PS4 being stronger than gaming PCs for years to come, it could be the strength of the Wii or the Wii U. I don't really care about that. It's nice and all, but I care about the games.

I will get this if there are some good games coming for it.

I stand by my sceptisism.
I see that "Share" button but no Information about its implementation. Will it record footage from a Game to be edited later or something? Or will it just start a livestream when i press the button?

But of course we can all trust the Gamecompanies to use the Opportunities given by this Controller in a responsible and non-gimmicky way.

PC gaming master race checking in. I see no reason to get one, in case that wasn't obvious. Low specs, locked system, and what will likely be a price tag for more than I would be willing to pay so... no.
Can do more on my PC for cheaper. Unless a lot of miracle games come out exclusively on the PS4, not interested, and I doubt that's going to happen.

I also think they're overestimating how many people are going to be able to buy a $400/500+ console and a $200+ handheld just for game connectivity.
I doubt that they expect this to be a primary draw so much as a "bonus."

That anyone would consider the writing in an Uncharted game good, let alone so good that (x) actually makes me weep for gaming.

Uncharted.
Journey.

Seriously, Uncharted is one of the best single-player experiences that my partner and I have had. The writing in it is so good that it's actually entertaining just to watch somebody else play. And I'm usually arguing that story is secondary to gameplay.
Meh, if I ever did get one it would be to play SotC and maybe Okami. But I can't go buying a console just to play a few games, I'm not mr super money man. Besides, the PS controller freaks me out. THE BUTTONS ARE SHAPES WFT?!?!

What few details have been revealed seem to make it much easier to make games for than the PS3, so that's a plus. Knack looks like fun and I love InFamous, so there are some interesting games. And while Destiny isn't exclusive to the PS4, just the sight of Bungie at a Sony conference was clearly an attempt to make a jab at Microsoft.

The rest of it... well, what was there? Capcom showed off a new engine, Square Enix showed off an old new engine and announced an announcement for E3 and Blizzard showed Diablo III. There was no price. There was no launch date. There were no actual specs.

It's the same problem I had with the WiiU reveal: it was basically "the new console is a thing, and here's a couple games."

That being said, as time went on the WiiU managed to convince me between the combination of new games announced (Rayman Legends, Lego City, Beyonetta 2, Pikmin 3) and the stuff we all know is gonna come out (the eventual Mario/Zelda/Smash Bros.) Sony has some games that mildly interest me (Knack, Infamous), the issue is that Sony isn't quite as reliable with franchises I like.

And I could not give any less of a shit about all the social stuff. Some people might, but not me.

As for how powerful it is, I don't care. It's not going to blow the WiiU out of the water and my computer will likely be able to run just about anything it can run. When you start to actively care about console power to the point that it influences your decisions, that's the sign that you should start looking for a gaming PC.

I'm likely gonna stick with my winning WiiU/PC combination, but you never know.

Let me start of by saying i wont buy it.
i was happy with its announcement, because consoles are finally moving forward. however the specs they state (or rather not state) does not seem impressive or readign to server in the future. Looks like they are still going for "slow and barely handles games but cheaper" way of console gaming. I guess the "bring revoliutionary technology" didnt work with PS3 so they went back to basics (not that the PS3 had good technology, but it was different than the rest of the market). That being said, i am happy consoles are moving forward and the whole gaming realm will mvoe forward (lets face it consoles were holding it back now), however unhappy as to where it is moving.

I see the critical issue with this thought experiment the fact that you think "experts" have weighed in on it. I've seen some guesses from people who've never seen it in action, whining from Nvidia because Sony didn't think their hardware was worth the cost, and people comparing it to a low end computer without seeming to understand that you get a hell of a lot more gaming potential when you're not running hundreds of other files in the background. I personally could do without this next generation of systems. The graphics will be better in a barely noticeable way, and games will continue to get more expensive to create and buy as they a developed for more advanced hardware. That being said I will buy it, because I'm a gamer, and if even half of the rumors about the next Xbox are true, then there's no way in hell I'd buy that console.

I have great memories of my PSOne and I downright loved the PS2.However, after buying a PS3, I also had to buy an X360 (mainly for Lost odyssey) and a Wii (mainly for Xenoblade Chronicles) to sate my gaming cravings.

And even with those three consoles in my house, I'm still spending more time and money on my PS2. (No red rings, no hacked accounts, no stupid Wii mote/Move/Kinect controllers that are forced onto you, an excellent library of platformer and JRPG games, etc.)

So, yeah, seeing how disappointed I was with the entirety of the 7th gen, I'm being very cautious about the 8th one, be it Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony or whatever company that wants a crack at making a new pseudo-console.

I've had a PS2, PSP and PS3 so it hurts me to say it but I hope Microsoft can pull up something awesome. I don't care about graphics, I don't care about the Vita, I don't care about sharing my gaming footage and I don't want to watch other people play. Sony seems to be of the opposite mindset on all counts, so I hope Microsoft does something that can improve the actual gameplay. And some sweet games, of all the PS4 release title games only Destiny and Watch Dogs caught my eye. They're both coming out for PS3.
