I am a console gamer, through and through. If I'm not excited about this console, I have to be excited for Microsoft's next offering. It's like a rule. I mean, unlike PC gamers, who can upgrade constantly, I can only jump forward every few years. So when a new console is announced, I get excited.
That said, I am fully aware of the potential pitfalls Sony (and Microsoft) are going to have to navigate going forward, and am not just blindly hoping that they do all right. Realistically, I can't get excited about the PlayStation 4 until I see what Microsoft is countering with. Then I can decide which company seems to have their act together, and get excited for that console. That said, the rumours still coming out of the Durango camp are a little unsettling, so let's say that while I'm cautiously excited for both, I currently have half of one foot preemptively set over the line on Sony's side. At least they've more or less debunked the whole 'always-online' thing. Until Microsoft does that, I can't be excited for the Durango.
Then again, hell, I could always just sod the whole business and buy a Wii U. Nintendo for sure would never try an 'always-online' scheme.
This is also going to be the console generation that I base the future of my gaming habit on. If the console offerings this time around suck balls, in a couple of years time, I will be building a PC. I prefer consoles, but I'm not so much a sheep that I'm going to blindly lap up whatever's on offer, even if it's shite. The companies have a couple of years to prove they deserve my attention.
What was the question? Oh, right, am I excited for the PS4. Cautiously excited, yeah. We'll see what they bring out at E3.
