There's a huge lineup of games for the PS3 that are coming out, that I think if a PS4 all of suddenly just popped up, people would get pissed off.

And the point of that would be for not only Sony to lose yet more money, but for those of us that bought a PS3 to lose money as well, having to purchase yet another console. However, in the long-run, it would make Sony more money to do so, considering that they'd most likely at that point be putting out games for 3 systems : PS2, PS3, and the probably already named PS4 (how original).

I know I would.

This PS4 stuff is stupid I think. We're not going to hear anything about a PS4 until the PS3 has atleast 5 years on it.

For Sony to just pop out a PS4 next year would be completely idiotic and stupid as the PS3 is already becoming a good competitor against the other consoles.

There would be no need. It would be like making a Ferrari Enzo [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enzo_Ferrari_(car)] a convertible: Expensive, useless, and done to the utter horror of the original designers.

If anybody was already working on the next iteration of their system it would be Microsoft. and I bet they are.

It would be downright stupid for Sony to work on the PS4 given that technology hasn't increased to the point that a new jump is needed. The only thing I could think of that they might be working on might be to make the PS3's Blu Ray drive faster or the system architecture easier to work with. Blu Ray still hasn't been throughly explored with only MGS taking the crown in space usage, and even that is only because of uncompressed audio. The PS3 still has much untapped potential for Sony to really seriously be working on the next iteration

Generally with production like this, you're pretty much on a rotating cycle. By the time a console hits shelves, there are already people developing the newer version. The only exception to this might be in a case where they aren't sure that they will be doing another version (for instance, if Microsoft decided that the 360 might be their last console entry, they might not start developing its follow up until they'd seen how the 360 did). But honestly, given the companies that are in the console race, I'm willing to bet that they're willing to drop a few extra million on contingency development.

So yeah, all three companies are busy making thier next consoles as we speak.

Indeed, the PS3 had started it's development before the PS2 had even hit the shelves. The thing is, with 5+ years between each generation there will be a lot of false starts and dead ends in the development of a new console. Plus it takes a long time (potentially years) to properly test all the parts for reliability/safety.

Which might explain how Microsoft got the 360 out so quickly...

Seeing as Sony wants the PS3 to last 10 years or so, I highly doubt that.
I agree, but you misunderstand. Sony released the PS2 5 years after the ps1, sony released the ps3 6 years after the PS2. PS1 was in development for 11 years. PS2 has been for 8+ years. Get the picture? They tend to release consoles about halfway through the lifespan of their current console.

until I hear some solid proof and not just another article that wants to stir up the rumor mill, I'm gonna chalk this up to some ol bullshit and call it a day.

As already said. Consoles are always in development even when one is just released. The sooner development begins, the quicker the companies can refine and improve on it. Its common sense to be fair.

I have no doubt that Nintendo and Microsoft are also developing the next generation of consoles as I type this.

Releasing another PlayStation so soon would be stupid because you should never shirk quality over speed.

It doesn't surprise me that there is a rumor that they are developing a ps4. It takes quite a few years to develop a new console. Two years into the cycle and they start development that takes about 4 or 5 years, that means that the console cycle will be nearing it's end by the time it's ready for release. I think that the ps4 will be the only thing that ends the ps2.

I think it's the talk about a new unreal engine that's getting these rumors started.

They might not need to make a another ps3 for years.. Tell me the improvements that could be made besides adding more spus. Go on i'm listening.

Development on a console doesn't just start 2 years before its developed - they never stop developing consoles (sega are still playing around with the idea of one). Just like the Wii2 and Xbox 720 (yes, those are the names they're going with) are being developed right now.
No actually the next xbox will be a 520 if i'm correct, Which i'm guessing will have a blu-ray player.

True that, I can assure y'all Sony's game R&D are already in the thick of PS4 development. I substituted release for development. Fact is that Sony does need to get their ducks in a row a little better with their current systems before a truly viable market for the next gen will be in place. I doubt that the PS3 will achieve the ten year life cycle they were looking for, but live and learn.

I am of the philosophy that they should either release a new system for competition in the exact same market as their competitors (Nintendo definitely lost a huge market share by not releasing the same year as the Xbox 360) or they need to wholly isolate themselves from competitor systems (Being the only new system to come out, the Xbox 360 really hit the ground running)

The care with which they need to approach the next system release and the buffs required to the PS3 have my prediction leaning for the PS4 lonesome release around 2013. But that is about as wild a guess as anything.

Sega is looking to return to the console racket?
