There would be no need. It would be like making a Ferrari Enzo [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enzo_Ferrari_(car)] a convertible: Expensive, useless, and done to the utter horror of the original designers.
The developers can't have had much time working on it. If it is released as soon as that suggests, it would end up working more like Top Gear's convertible 4x4.

Why, yes. They did just attack it with a chainsaw.

Of course they're developing it now! Do you know how much time is put in to making these things? It takes much much longer to make the console than the video game. After sony finished the PS3, they probably(I saw probably, because despite my best efforts, I have not been able to get a camera in any of Sony's meetings) started throwing around ideas for a PS4. And you're all wrong, the officials names are:

Microsoft: Xbox 468.93

Sony: Playstation Q

Nintendo: Wiiii

I think after the 360 generation falls out, I'll stick with PC gaming. I always get to think about new hardware and be excited, plus indie games always available with the big name releases (which are all cheaper).

Complain about hardware costs, sure, but I get more power and more features :D

Just think, the next Xbox and Playstation will have the power of current graphics cards now, in the PC world. Somewhere between an 8800GT to GTX 260.

I get Ybox and Piddle, but what's with the extra 3s and 1?

It's Thirty-Three and a Third. A reference to the fact that the third Naked Gun film was "The Naked Gun 33 1/3". Although it would be the 4th PlayStation, I just wanted to put in the reference.

Seeing as Sony wants the PS3 to last 10 years or so, I highly doubt that.
I agree, but you misunderstand. Sony released the PS2 5 years after the ps1, sony released the ps3 6 years after the PS2. PS1 was in development for 11 years. PS2 has been for 8+ years. Get the picture? They tend to release consoles about halfway through the lifespan of their current console.
They might not need to make a another ps3 for years.. Tell me the improvements that could be made besides adding more spus. Go on i'm listening.
Only thing I can think of is making something that makes the cell processor less of a pain to program for.

It doesnt take a crystal ball to know that SONY, MICROSOFT & NINTY R&D department will be working on future console projects, it takes years to develope a console so its best to get started early.

the whole talk about the PS3 lasting 10 years (before they release a new console) will only happen if its financialy beneficial to sony, not becose the PS3 is so powerfull it can last that long, future (5+ years time) technology will make the 360+ps3 look oldhat, its wether it makes sense to release a new console by then.

for console makers it makes sense to wait aslong as possible before releaseing a new console, since its fair to presume micrcosoft will be developeing a new console sony know they must develope one to keep up (or vice versa if you prefer), asfor ninty they are harder to judge, the market they aimed the wii at doesnt "need" constant (5 years) tech updates but i think they will still be developeing a new console, when it will be released well that another matter.

and thats what it comes down to realy, are they researching new consoles? yes. when will they decide to release new consoles? know one knows at moment, we can only guess, but the smart money is on 2011 (due to the usual 5+ years cycle).

lets wait & see, and while we are waiting lets enjoy playing games (regardless of what platform its on)

Sony be original? In naming something? Blu-Ray (uses a Blue laser) PSP(Play Station Portable), PS1 - 3... mini-disc... come on.

I voted for no, but now thinking about it and reading this, it does make since for them to begin development and what better time than when they are starting to see how they can fix what's gone wrong with the PS3? I do hope they don't release it for a long time (I can't afford another console, 3 is enough) and that they put in backwards compatibility (even if it's software based) but they need to take their time and develop it right the first time.

And I think it'll be:

Xbox '10 (reference to the year I think it may come out.. no facts, pure speculation)
PS4 (no creativity is allowed in naming Sony platforms)
Super Wii (if you don't get this, come on...)

You guys do realize that all companies start development on the next system when they release the latest one, right?

I bet you my god damned sould that if Sony named the next Playstation anything else, people would ***** about it. People always ***** about Sony, wether it's them trying to change their controller or adding a feature that something else already has but makes it better, absolutely everyone would ***** about "WHy the hell is it called the PlayStation B3yond?!?! IT SOUNDS RETARTED!"

^^No and I'm going to keep ignoring that. :D

Why? Ps3 is still top of the line compared to the other consoles.

Btw I have an Xbox 360 and play Halo, but I'm not an idiot and I'm not going to deny the PS3's processing power.

Ignorant Poster is Ignorant.

There's a lot of improvement to made Graphically, the PS3 is essentially using an nvidia 7800 ultra graphics card. They could throw in an nvidia 9800GX2. Be the most powerful console evar1

this point needs to be reiterated until everybody reads it. most of the conjecture going on here is way off target.

Does anyone remember when Nintendo announced the "revolution", it was like a billion and a half years ago, pretty much right after the Gamecube (or "Dolphin") was released. Consoles take a lot of time to develop. But I think this current Gen bolloxed itself by being released way to soon.

Oh, I believe Sony is starting development for a PS3 successor... but it's probably all on paper at this stage, studies on what hardware will be like when they actually do want to start prototyping and conceptual stuff. It'll be years before they actually move on to bending metal, and further years until anything ships to retail.

I really don't think this is happening in earnest though. They are certainly looking for things to change, etc, but their main focus is the 3. I mean, hell, they're still releasing games for PS2! That system is, what, 6 years old?
