Horror games are a lot less scary if you can just reload all the time.
Clive Barker's Undying begs to differ.

Thief 1 & System Shock 2 too.
No, it doesn't. In fact, all the above games would be far more intense with a more limited save system.

Quicksave made a lot of the trial and error portions of Max Payne 2 a lot more bearable. I think quicksave is great. Sure, it makes the game sort of too easy, but the ability to save anywhere, anytime mitigates a lot of problems that many games have, namely frustrating minigames, stupid ambushes, lame puzzles, etc. Quicksave reduces a lot of the frustration factor.

The Punisher is a great game, but sometimes I get frustrated when I'm messing around and not watching my health, then I die and then have to play the same 10+ minute segment over again to get back where I was. In Max Payne 2 I generally don't lose more than maybe 3 minutes.

I agree that certain genres can lose some of their impact by virtue of the fact they're trying to instill a sense of dread in the player, and how worried can you really be if you quicksaved 5 seconds ago? So I guess for stealth and horror games, maybe a limited number of them is in order (Blood Money did that, it worked well). That said, I think quicksaves in general are great.

I find little to no difference between the two, so it never bothers me.

But auto-save needs to become mandatory.

I practically spam quicksave, as I detest backtracking. Mass Effect is the worst for it, I quicksave practically after every conversation or combat takes place...

If the games has quick saves I will use it frequently, if not I don?t really mind except in red faction guerrilla that game could of used it seeing how it did not have a death mechanicand you simply poped up at a near by hideout base thing.

I don't really care that much. I'm playing through Gears of War again now, which has quicksave as the only option, so that's fine (especially since it allows me to focus on reaching each checkpoint), although it can be a bugger when I get stuck in a certain place due to the quicksave and can't go back for different weapons/ammo/etc, like yesterday when it took me an hour to finish a single firefight because I'd foolishly got rid of my sniper rifle and had little ammo and couldn't go back for more.

When a game has quicksave and normal save, I usually use the normal save, but the quicksave can be very useful in certain places (such as in Oblivion). Otherwise, as I said, I don't really care.

try playing morrowinds without quicksave, due to the games random crashes, its a nightmare
The xbox is even worse, I used to live in fear of opening the map menu.
OT- I would much prefer if games did, but if they don't, well, I'll still play them. FF12 is probably the only game I play less because of the save system

It's only really useful in RPG's and some FPS games, Strategy games can benefit too. I myself tend not to quicksave too often in case something bad has gone on without me knowing, i like to play for a while until I'm sure it's ok to save. Call me cautious, but i don't like bad saves :D

I use it a lot in Fallout 3, although it's rather redundant, as it autosaves pretty much every time you walk through a door.

I not a PC gamer, but I would not at all be against if they added another button to the controller for quicksaves. I have a quicksaver's mentality where I constantly feel the need to save for sake of keeping without flaws, though some games I get lost in (focused, not confused) and forget to save for awhile (like Morrowind, which as mentioned, can kick me in the ass at times due to freeze)

Whoops, forgot to answer...though I kinda did. I dont need it obviously, but I sure as hell would prefer it.

Quicksaves are nice. Anyone know the feature where you can NAME your saves, I love that, I hate when I can't tell which is mine because I don't remember specifically what time it was.

I like quicksaving when it happens automatically and if the game has a regular save feature.

For instance, I was playing Half Life 2 and ditched my hovercraft, only to find out half an hour later that I needed it to pass a certain area. When I checked my save files, I found that I had nothing before the part where I ditched the hovercraft. Because of this, I had to start the entire game over.

I like them. I wouldn't want them in some of the games I play though. They would feel out of place.

I frequently find myself reaching for the F5 key in a game which has no quicksave button.

Not having a quicksave or even being able to save outside of save points can make a game more intense, especially in the horror genre. I DO appreciate having an autosave feature though, especially if there is a power outage etc.

The one thing I would dearly love in ALL games, is the chance to save before and AFTER big, unskippable cut scenes before a difficult fight. There are times that I would like to show the cut scene to a friend, but I don't need to see them 50 times. Having the cut scenes be skippable isn't bad but even that tends to break the flow when you are trying to get an attack pattern down.

Quicksave on most combat/war games seems like a must though.
