Asking "do you like rap" is like asking "do you like electronica," there are many, VERY different kinds. From oldschool, dance, hip-hop, trip-hop, ganster(a'), underground, political, etc.

most of it sucks.

But when it's good, it's REALLY fucking good.

See: Jedi Mind Tricks, The Urban Sophisticates

FUCK Kanye.

I can't say I'm a fan, but then again all the rap I hear is the crap that's coming out today. Recently I stumbled across El-P and he's pretty damn good if you don't mind the obvious polictical overtones. My favorite songs by him would be League of Extroardinary Nobodies and Flyentology. Definately look into this guy.

I didn't vote at all, because none of those options apply to me. Some rap is good and clever like any style or genre of music. I don't like 'gangsta' rap talking about bitchez and hoes and who's whos dog. I like one's that make me think like Scrubilos(?) Pip or decent ryhming sweet sounding songs like Buck 65.

Rap is just another genre of music that might not be your preference. I listen to just about anything. I cannot stand only 2 segments of music... those being country and opera. Rap is as cliched as country. Country music talks about their redneckness, pickup truck, drinking, dogs, farms, and small towns (not nesscarly in that order). Rap talks about hoes, getting some, hustling, cars, shoes, drugs, and shootings. I love rap/hip-hop as much as I love alternative rock. It's all what you don't mind listening to

I find rap in foreign languages to be more appealing to me than when it's in English. Don't really know why. Maybe I just enjoy the rhythmic way rap goes about it's business.

I'm not a fan. It's not my particular blend of darjeeling, love.

EDIT: Although this is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eELH0ivexKA

Can we have a poll that lets us say that we don't like it without making us sound like morons?
LOL

But then that wouldn't be true.

:)

(just kidding)

Gangsta rap really ruined it for me. While I actually think Body Count is kinda good, I hate what they did to the genre as a whole. A lot of the rap made after that - mainstream or not - is trying to live up to what is basically loser ideals and a lot of stupid kids imitate it.

It can be fun, although it can also get repetitive. The lyrics are really the main show (unless you plan to include more than one or two background riffs), and some have done it well.

Personally, MC Hammer wasn't too bad. The only one I could really relate to though, is "White and Nerdy".

I like some of it. Mostly stuff by Eminem and Flobots but i only like the songs with a meaning not just "Oh i backhanded by ho and then rode around in my pimped out Civic!". Because the only reason that i like some rap is because it tells a beatiful story or gives a nice message and if it wasn't for that it's just a man shouting about hos and being a sexist bastard down a mic.

You know there's other rappers out there who aren't Eminem and Flobots who are just as good (and usually much better than Flobots, who suck). I mean, I don't hate Eminem or anything, but every white kid says "Eminem is the only rapper I listen to because he tells stories and doesn't do that gangster shit" when if they'd listen to half of his songs, he raps about gangster shit and murdering his ***** of a wife. People too often forget, even though Eminem is a beautiful aritst with some of his lyrics and songs, he is also a poor white guy from Detroit who grew up ghetto with gang affiliated friends.

Jay-Z is able to ride that line pretty well himself. He does alot of the booty bouncer lyrics, and he's known for that, but then he puts out records like "99 Problems" and "Can I Live" and shows that he's a beautiful artist despite him being a former crack dealer from Brooklyn. But alot of people who bang Eminem won't give Jay-Z the same respect because of his singles, and what I can only assume is his race.

I understand alot of white kids relate to Eminem because he is white himself, but if you like his music, then there are others alot like him with a similar message and style, the only difference being their being black or of another race.

I dunno, that's just been something I've noticed for a long time and its been on my mind. White kids who only like Eminem...

(But then again you might not even be white, so maybe I'm being presumptuous.)

They probably have an irrational fear of big muscular black men knocking down their doors if they're caught listening to DMX.

Music is music.

I don't care who made the sound or why... if it works and I like, I like it. The genrefication of music as a whole is a marketing device and it's sad to see people preemptively disregard the work of others due to these arbitrary and typically incorrect labels.

We have some rap senses in common.

I admit, I like Kanye West. Other than that, I like rappers who talk about real stuff.

Personal favorite: K-Os, Flobots, Gym Class heroes.

SOME rap is good, but these are few and far between. I have three rap songs on my iTunes:
Ride wit Me (Catchy tune, so sue me)
Oh No You Didn't (just plain awesome)
White and Nerdy (My theme song, unfortuanately)
...You had to use those as examples of good rap?

Hieroglyphics, Nas, Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco. These are my favourite artists, all rappers, so yeah, I like it. Their shit be dope, yo.
