The darker tone in "Tools of Destruction" was a real turn-off for me. I loved the earlier games just BECAUSE of the light, humorous, not-serious-at-all tone, and then they went all angsty and "last of your kind" on us. Seems they also retconned the best game in the series (part 2) out of existence entirely, as nothing from it is shown on any of the screens with a load of scenes from all the other previous games. Probably because the girl in that game looks kinda, sorta, just like a variety of Lombax and her existence would throw a bigger wrench than Ratchet's into their new storyline. (and NO, she is not mentioned either. I call shenanigans - and failing that, I call bullshit. Retconning is for amateurs and Star Trek writers.)
And speaking of female sidekicks, I would say that Talwyn is the worst one in ANY reasonably recent game, not just the R&C series. Uninteresting and obnoxious personality coupled with horrible character design took the entire game down another full notch. And Emperor Tachyon - why don't they just admit he is Ripto from their Spyro series in disguise? It was all I could think of every time he appeared.
All in all, I liked part 1, LOVED 2 and 3, liked Deadlocked/Gladiator again, thought Size Matters was pretty "Meh" and was severly disappointed in Tools, even though it was pretty fun to play and had some scenes of pure comedy gold, mostly involving the robot pirates.
Insomniac's stepped in it, and now I think they're looking for a way to get out of it gracefully. Bringing in Dr. Nefarious will at least be a step in the right direction.
