A long time ago, in a galaxy fa... well, this galaxy actually. A trilogy of films were created that received recognition however their creator sat without a single "Best Director" academy award... Because of this he took his revenge on the world and created the next Star Wars Trilogy and the people of the world screamed "WHY GEORGE LUCAS, WHY?! WHY DO YOU HATE US SO?", as George Lucas stood over the lifeless body of his once great friend Star Wars.

So I ask you the people of The Escapist:

Does George Lucas deserve the academy award for Best Director because of the original Star Wars Trilogy?

(Please vote for your answer and state your reasons in the comment section below... if you want to...)

Maybe when they were first made, but after all the shit he's put many fans through, I'd say he deserves nothing.

EDIT: I also have to ask that you remove the stupid fucking "LOLRADNUMXD" answer because it's just that. Fucking stupid.

Hmm... ah... hmm, no.

I might have considered it if you had phrased your request as something even remotely close to polite... but you didnt.

Well, technically he only directed the first one (Episode 4: A New Hope) in the original series.

Episode 5 was directed by Irvin Kershner and Episode 6 was directed by Richard Marquand.

No, its a good movie and I love the original trilogy. What would that even change, if he got the best director award it wouldnt affect anything.

He can't have an academy award for the original "trilogy" because he only directed the first one. But should he be able to get an academy award for best creator or writer then, yeah.

EDIT - Oh, I got ninja'd, Stupid slow computer...

Yes, yes that has already been stated... the fact still stands as he would still be able to receive "a single "Best Director" academy award" so it doesnt really change as he only need to win one.

Although I could have put a single competitive Oscar instead... but I didnt.

For that exact reason, no.

And plus the Phantom Menace is still unforgivable. It still hurts and tarnishes the other fiilms a little. I watch the originals and have a niggling nightmare at the back of my mind that Jar JAr Binks will enter at any moment.

At the moment, I'm apperantly the only person here who has never seen a single Star Wars movie. I guess I'm a horrible geek.

George Lucas didn't direct episodes 5 & 6. While he produced and supervised, he had very little to do with the series after episode 4. If he deserves any prize, he deserves one for spawning a trilogy and having such a huge impact on culture. Beyond that...

The only accurate answer I can give is...
EEEEEHEHHHHHHHHEEEEEHHHHHEEEHHHEHEHHHHHEHHHHHH
... But thankfully, I'll elaborate.

I hardly think that George Lucas should get an Academy Award for best directing. Let's face it, the acting wasn't number one in that movie (A New Hope, the one he directed).

Having said that, I still think the movie should still get an award for best CGI since it was pretty ground breaking for the time.

Pfft, no!

As a Star Wars fan I must point out that he did not even direct the best one (Empire strikes back) and that the 3rd one was not very well directed. Even though the first one (a new hope) was, and still is, brilliant!

Basically, if you direct anything that starts a cult following and/or a religion then you deserve something. Be it Best Director, Best screenwriter, or Best rip off of Gene Roddenberry.

I haven't seen many of the movies that won out over the Trilogy, but the films have become great American classics - much more than the vast majority of Oscar-winners - and Lucas deserves at least a lifetime achievement award for them.

Man, Lucas fucked the new trilogy into the next goddamned millennium. So no, he should not. The first 3 I thought were okay, but the new ones just blew insane amounts. And besides, its not like episodes 4, 5, and 6 were cinematic masterpieces really, just a lot of nerdgasm surrounding them.
