Oscars mean nothing, they're just something nice for the mantlepiece. I think Lucas doesn't need any more validation of his work than the frothing generations-spanning cult of worship that Star Wars attracts.

Love or hate Lucas for what he's done with Star Wars, his directing, while good, isn't great and thus not worthy of earning a coveted Oscar for his directing. He's a great storyteller and can convey those ideas in a cinematic fashion but I don't watch A New Hope and think Lucas' directing is what made the film.

I can't comment on Lucas' work on Episodes I-III as I only saw each one once and can't remember enough about them to comment on (other than hating all the green screen use.)

THX-1138, again, is a great story but I don't think it's directed with any greatness (...looks over Lucas' other directing credits...) and I haven't watched American Graffiti in years so can't comment there.

So, in conclusion, I still say Lucas without an Oscar for Best Director seems about right.

I can't believe it escaped so many that George only directed 1/3 of the original Star Wars trilogy, and even then, he had a lot of support while doing so.

Actually, a lot of what makes the prequel trilogy inferior (including bad acting) can be blamed on Lucas running the show single handedly, not least of all the directing.

George Lucas is a lot of things, and I'm as crazy about Star Wars as any other (even the prequels), but he does not deserve any kind of award for his directing.

what? you mean like retcon the Oscars? or give it to him for the whole trilogy in some vague idea of what he's being awarded for?

Those are really good films and all... but that was that. Francis Ford Coppola and Apocalypse Now didnt get the Oscars they deserved because of some bullshit with the Deer Hunter the year before getting them and avoiding a 'Nam trend.

Apocalypse Now is better, as a film, than all of the Star Wars films- and it didnt get the recognition that it deserved. I enjoy the Star Wars films a whole lot more since AN! doesnt really get me in a good mood whenever I watch it. But its times like that that you realize that Oscars do not mean a goddamn thing. The Academy really has no idea what theyre doing. You can compound Lucas' lack of an Oscar too. As well as the lack of Peter O'Toole EVER getting an Oscar even now... which is the biggest bullshit ever.

The original star wars movies are amazing, though! Isn't that enough? You don't need the academy to validate that to prove it. Just watch them

I don't know. What won the best director awards the years those came out?

1977: Annie Hall (with Close Encounters of the Third Kind as another nominee)
1980: Ordinary People (this is a fucking fantastic movie)
1983: Terms of Endearment (a classic as well)

Okay given what actually won the awards those years I'm gonna go with Hell No.

Maybe when they were first made, but after all the shit he's put many fans through, I'd say he deserves nothing.

EDIT: I also have to ask that you remove the stupid fucking "LOLRADNUMXD" answer because it's just that. Fucking stupid.
Hmm... ah... hmm, no.

I might have considered it if you had phrased your request as something even remotely close to polite... but you didnt.
Well, why would I?

Because the anonymity that the internet supplies isnt a reason for acting like a d*ck.

I have to watch the movies again to tell you. What's funny is that I was humming Darth Vader's theme a second ago...

I don't think he'll want it, anyway. Just look at all the shit that's come after.

1. It's not "anonymous" I have a username.
2. Who's to say it's because I'm on the internet, I'm just as big an asshole in real life as I am on The Escapist.
3. Personal Insults aren't really tolerated on The Escapist.

Yes, I think he should be given Best Director for the original series. Although I do think LotR was better. And for the record...I LIKED Star Wars Episodes 1-3 (prequel trilogy) AND Indiana Jones IV

No. To be honest, there are a lot of films better than star wars, hell, Star Wars was never that good, it just had some great scenes and action, story wise...it doesn't really stand out.

1. Having a "username" still allows you to remain anonymous.

2. Okay, so you are a self confessed "asshole". That makes point 3 a non-issue, as you admit that you are.

Now I would appreciate it if you would leave this thread, you arent adding anything to the discussion and you arent sticking to the topic.

Persist and I will be forced to report you.

For the original trilogy, I would say yes.

However since then Star Wars has become just plain awful, and makes me want to cry. (Clone Wars)

I've already given my opinion on your thread, in fact, I was the first poster.

Yes I know you have already given your opinion, which is why all you are doing now is derailing.
