I'm sitting here waiting for my chicken to cook (new recipe; wish me luck cause I think I screwed it up but it smells delicious anyway!) when I booted up the 360 to watch me some Netflix.

And would you looky here...

New sale with a lot of great games that I unfortunately already have (might I recommend Bioshock and Spec-Ops for those of you also shopping here) but then "Remember Me" caught my eye.

The game got a bit of a pounding in the gaming world but for $10, it had a cool enough concept that I thought it might be worth giving it a whirl. Then I realized that I had thousands of Escapist people to ask what they thought of it so I'm here to ask you to do my bidding (Dance Puppets Dance!!!).

How is it? Worth $10? If you had to say "It's like X game except ______", how would you complete that sentence?

Choose wisely friends for my $10 is counting on you.

EDIT: Sounds like I should go ahead and pull the trigger on this one. Thank you everyone for your participation. There is cake in the back. Just go through those doors marked "incinerator" to access your cake.

Remember Me is a brawler/platformer with a rhythm based combat system with customizeable combos. You'll either get the feel of it or you'll fail to and have to fight based on on screen prompts. The setting and background is fantastic but they don't do remotely enough with it.

It's an average-ish game that my biggest complaint about is all the obvious untapped potential they never reach out and grasp. Basically, it wouldn't have been panned the way it was if it wasn't dangling the possibility of being incredibly awesome just out of reach and never paying out. It's a tease.

Watching this thread too to know if it's worth it. (27.99 on steam and 29.99 on PSN)

I just remember people saying it was going to be like Assassin's creed meets Mirror's edge, and then remember the reviewers saying that exact same thing, and adding 'but they failed'

captcha says it's hunky dory but i don't believe it.

you missed out the memory rewrite sections which were good, limited and too few.

"The combat plays like Batman Arkham Series but less polished but interesting combo mechanics can make it satisfying".

...I tried.

To me, its a solid game. It has great aesthetics and setting. And there are pretty cool memory altering puzzles that I wish there were more of throughout the game. I can definitely say that I was fortunate to play this for "free" because of PS+.

Put me under "Good enough for $10"

For ten bucks, sure.

I paid about $40 for it and was fairly satisfied.

It's not a good game by any means, but nor is it that bad. Just average and forgettable (hurr hurr).

Setting is interesting, combat is okay and could have been great, but never quite gets there. The level design is painfully linear. I'm fine with linear games but this is the kind which really could be described as a glorified corridor. Story is a bit of a mess, it comes together but only just and it's not really worth turning up for.

The memory altering sections feel like they come from a different game and also, while kind of cool, never really amount to much. There's only about five of them and only the last one has any intricacy to it.

It's like God Hand except with fantastic world building and the occasionally cool memory fuck-em'-up bits.
Or it's like the Arkham games with a more dystopia lean without feeling like some crappy YA novel.

I love this game much more than it's actual quality. I'd say it barely reached the high echelon of kinda above average I guess (see also: Halo 3 which I adore). If you can stomach the combat getting a bit grating and worse-than-Bayonetta Quick Time Events during the boss fights (hey at least their predictable), it's worth it. Story needed more polish but Nilin does deserve a good look in, especially since everyone gushes over Elizabeth and Ellie. You can see where they've had to cut parts of the game because of evil corporations.

But yes, of course I will recommend my GOTY 2013, I would be a fool not to.

I can second most of this but I still really liked the game itself. It's not a brilliant game but I loved it (the visuals were impressive). It's not bad but it can be criticised for some shortcomings (memory rewrite sequences are only a handful, not much of the setting is explored, mainly). Overall, I was pleased. It really reminded me of Oni, and, in fact, if I had to use the proposed template of describing this game, it would be "It's like Oni except the anime look and weapons". It's not going to be that precise but a good starting point for comparison, I'd say. Somewhat more precise shortest description would be "Prince of Persia meets Oni", for the platforming and linearity of the former and the combat of the latter.

As I said, I really enjoyed it and I think 10 bucks is a good price for it. I'd personally value it at 20-30 tops (so, don't pay more than that) thus I'd suggest giving it a look.

For 10 bucks - sure.

My only big issue is that its very forgettable. Combat is very Arkham-like, setting is interesting enough but feels too linear, story is average.

The memory rewrite sections I found alright. My problem with most of them is that they're quite trial & error. You watch a memory first and then get the chance to rewind it and change minor details in the effort to cause a major change. There's no real way to plan it though, you just kinda mess with stuff (move that table, retract the cup holder, etc) until you get the result you want and rewind if you mess it up. I didn't get much kick out of it but it was an interesting experiment.

I'm only an hour into the PS3 version, which I picked up for about $15. I'm glad I bought it, because it seemed like one of those games I would regret not buying. I may actually pick this up on Steam later on.

DoPo is spot on regarding the visuals. The first real level you encounter shows garbage and deterioration in such an incredible way. And the use of music in the fight sequences is both entertaining and an effort to teach you to land combos properly. That being said, this game is slick looking, but judging from the comments of people who have actually finished the game, I suspect it's going to be like my experience with the anime Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. The comparison isn't off by much, because Remember Me touches on some of the concepts that SAC handled so clumsily. I'm kind of pleased I bought this. It was a gamble, but not a big one.

I paid £2.50 to rent it and i was disappointed...terrible, boring game which i didn't even bother to finish (which is rare as rocking horse shit for me). It's not the worst game ever made just another bland mess that feels like a couple of other games but far worse.

Yes, absolutely that is a steal. I paid full price close to launch and wasn't disappointed.

- The story is fantastic. Its one of the rare games that made me think "what would the real world look like if we actually developed this technology?" Its effectively uploading your memories to a cloud storage device which might not be out of the realms of possibility in the future. And then you've got people stealing or swapping memories, selling them on a black market, going insane because of forgetting their actual identity. Powerful stuff.

- Combat is Batman style. Its not as good as Batman, but its still enjoyable. There are ways you can adjust your combos to do bonus damage or regain health that makes the system open to experimentation and it can be quite tactical.

- Moving around the environment is the weakest part of the game, its like a very poor man's Tomb Raider with no exploration.

- Memory remixing was not really what I thought it would be. You don't get to do it very often, and each time there is only one correct way to solve the puzzle. Its a shame that the game probably wasn't successful enough for them to do a sequel and expand the system.

If you haven't decided yet, I'd say go for it. I finished it in a few days and found it quite a fun ride. Yes, there is potential here that wasn't fully made use of, but the premise itself didn't disappoint in offering something a bit different. The combat is fun, if you spend a bit of time with it and get it adjusted to your play style. It's not particularly challenging, yet satisfying because of how 'tuned in' you have to be to what's going on. The moves are pretty cool, the aesthetic style is very slick and one you can take in quite a bit of detail, despite the rest of the game not showing as much in-depth aspects (characters, gameplay, exploration etc.)

The boss fights are fun, and nothing that will get you hung up on for too long. I found the story very engaging and thought provoking, and paced out well. Also liked the fact that the memory remixes only had a certain number of combinations so that I wasn't stuck there re-watching the same scene dozens of times to get it right. It just wants you to progress smoothly, which I quite appreciate. Not that many games take pacing and challenge into a balance like this did.

At the very VERY worst, if it's not your cup of tea, you won't find it a grind or anything to polish off to scratch it off the list and/or get your money's worth, but I'd say it was worth around $20 or so.

If you're like me and into the sorts of things it does, that being the custom combo thing, interesting setting based around a key theme (memories as socially sharable data) and some pretty beautiful graphics and environment design, it's well worth that price. I still need to finish it, but I've more than satisfied with it based on what I paid (more than $10) for it.

The game has its fair share of minor and moderate niggles, but no deal-breakers, and it's definitely worth 10 bucks. I'd still pay anything up to 20 myself. The setting and story are rather interesting, and the visual design is a real treat. Also the game sports short dalliances into a splendid mechanic that lets you alter people's memories to affect their personalities, and I'd argue that despite their brevity these sequences alone make the game worthwhile. If you're into sci-fi, 3rd person brawlers and innovative combat customization mechanics I'd say go for it!

Bought it in a sale for about £5, always wanted to try it. Loved it. Setting is very nice, and quite different to the usual. Fights, if you get the hang of the combos are seamlessly fun action sequences (and I usually dislike action brawlers). Memory alteration sequences were pretty cool, and although the QTE in the boss fights was annoying, it wasn't the end of the world.

Storyline and main character were really good, and I found the story to be quite tragic in places (you'll see...)

Personally, I'd call it a £15-£20 game easily, and for $10? Its a steal. I ended up playing this one on the big screen rather than the pc monitor because it had such nice visuals.

really worth $10.
Pros:
Great story, background and Character, solid to innovative fighting mechanics, great Memory Altering sequences.
Cons: rarely / never explores the depth of the possibilities it puts on display, QTE, linear.

captcha: roll again

Can someone tell me if I completely misunderstood the combat? I found it immensely tedious, since you can't counter you spend more time dodging than building combos.

Aesthetic of it is great and story is "so so" for a science fiction action game.

Not really on about Remember me, but as it's in the same sale I'll say that I found XCOM: Enemy Within to be worth the £7($10) it's been reduced to. I was kinda miffed that 2K saw fit to release an expansion pack at full game price, but now it's on sale for expansion pack money I gave it a look and it's well worth a punt for what it brings to the table over and above 'ready salted' XCOM.
