As many people have probably heard about now, Robert Green is the keeper who made a mistake during a big football match, costing England a win.

Now I was a bit dissapointed with this, as I would be - but I can't but help feel sorry for the guy.

He plays football for a living, he makes millions of pounds off of a game that people like to watch, and essentially that's all it is, a game. Now many people are practically seeing him as the devil, or someone who purposely sabotaged the matched for some bizzare reason.

He's going to live life, thinking about that one mistake he made, and it's going to be miserable for him, possibly even depressing, because the media are insulting him and taking the piss out of him every single minute because of a mistake he made in a game.

So what are your thoughts on his mistake, do you want him to die, or do you feel sorry for him?

EDIT: I also guess it helps me sympathise with him is the fact that I'm a keeper.

I feel sorry for him. I've played keeper in big games before, (city playoffs), and I know how nervous I was. I thought I'd make a mistake like that, and I know how bad I would have felt. I can sympathize with the guy.

A mistake is a mistake, everyone makes them so I'm not fussed at all. I might be more if I watched football, but I don't, so meh!

i do but it wasn't his fault. from looking at it, it was just bad luck that the ball bounced off his gloves in that direction. granted, he should have caught it when he had the chance but that's just the way it goes

The game was yesterday, the media will forget about it as soon as something else happens.
We have a few more games left at least, someone else will cock up and he won't be on his own any more.

It was fucking appalling though, like you said it's his job and he gets paid millions of pounds for it, and I genuinely think I could have done better.

I feel bad for the sucker. I've seen so many photoshopped images based on that.

A lot of the forums I've visited have been totally bashing us Yanks. Don't blame them for being upset though, it was really lucky on our part.

No, he should of caught it, there is no question he stuffed up. It was entirely his fault, his technique was woeful.

I think the pressure and murmurings of unhappiness at his choice in the lead up to the game meant he was jumpy, and transferred to him making a really careless stuffup.

That said, the top keepers don't make those mistakes like that.

Paul Robinson still hasn't quite recovered from his mistake in goal a few years back, when he struck the ball - only for it to bounce backwards into the net.

I feel sorry for the guy - everyone makes mistakes. At least they put him back on in the second half, it shows they haven't lost confidence in him.

It sucks that he fucked up, but hey. It was still a great game. He can cry about it and dwell on it because of the media, or he can get over it and make sure he doesn't let that kind of thing happen again.

He needs to man up then. But yeah, never said the dude would get over it, just the media will move on.

It would have completely knocked his confidence if they hadn't left him on, it was better to leave him there and hope he sucks it up and redeems himself or at least get some confidence back.

I really feel sorry for the guy.
It didn't even ruin the match for England, though (they weren't really that good anyway) and he made one really good save after that, but, yeah, it sucks that people will be reminding the guy of this day for a long, long time.
The Algerian keeper is probably in the same situation though I guess football fans there are more mannered.

The media in Europe is crazy... When someone famous screws up, everyone gets on their ass. I remember when the Austrians weren't winning much in the winter Olympics, the Austrian newspapers ran a front page with pictures of 4 of them and the word "LOSERS". It's crazy. One time, Federer broke down and cried after not winning a tournament. Probably from stress and everything; like, I can understand it. But the Swiss media jumped on him, calling him a sore loser and a cry baby. Along the lines of, "You lost, which was a disgrace to our country, and now you cry about it, further disgracing it?"

I think if you do anything in Europe that gives you attention, you should be prepared for this when you mess up.

I feel awful for him. I'm even a West Ham, so I know that he's actually a pretty good keeper, and doesn't deserve all the shit he's getting. We all make mistakes, and the likelihood of that happening is only intensified when it's on an international level.

Move on media, unless you want to destroy another England goalkeeper's career

I do feel sorry for the guy, we all make mistakes, the only difference is that his one was broadcast to half the world.

Dont blame him for it, he does a better job of goalkeeping than me and certainly a better job of it than any of these media types.

Have to say I feel quite sorry for him, it's a mistake anyone could have made really, pure bad luck, but with the unforgiving nature of the media and fans in general this could haunt him for a long time to come. Just gotta hope he sucks it up and doesn't let it ruin his career.

Anyone remember Gareth Southgate and his penalty disaster? It's not as big a deal as that was but I'm sure many people remember the frenzy and fury after it. Lets just hope he's getting his bad luck out the way before the crucial games :p

I feel sorry for him. Everyone makes mistakes, he was just incredibly unlucky to make one when millions of people were watching.

While I do feel sorry for him... I also want to string him up... DAMN YOU GREEN!!!. Though he wasn't the only problem with that match... We should have been 3 up and that goal wouldn't had mattered too much if not for the shit performance from the England team. The American team showed a brilliant performance though.
