We wouldn't have to feel sorry for him if those lazy buggers up front would learn to score.
It's only the AIM OF FOOTBALL.

I don't even like football and it makes me angry.

I kinda feel sorry for the guy, because he won't be able to set foot on his home turf again without constant fear of beatdowns and assassinations, seeing how English soccer fans are about the most clinically insane on the whole damn planet. Of course, his mistake was incredibly stupid and should not have happened to a national goalie, but then again except for Rooney the entire English team played an incredibly sucky game yesterday.

I feel sorry for him, I used to be a goalkeeper in my school team and I made a near identical mistake which lost my team the match. It's not nice when everyone is being a twat to you for cocking up once and completely ignoring all the excellent saves you made.

Happened to me too! Difference is that millions of people are screwing him for his mistake.

Your friends might have given you grief, but imagine looking at the news and seeing your name being pissed on and insulted.

I feel sorry for him, even though it was a dire mistake. However at one point lampard gave the ball away easily, but no one cares. You make 10 good saves and all your remembered for is the goal you should have saved. Pretty stupid if you ask me, as if a striker, whose job it is to score and shoot well slices the ball, we all go "oh well next time". I think Green should still stay in goal, he made a good second-half save. Failing Green doesn't play the next game, i would like joe hart to play, but please not calamity James, god no!

Well for one, I will be offended at you calling us Brits. When it was the English team. Tsk tsk.

And Yeah, I was pretty pissed off when it happened, But green is a strong keeper in all fairness, he makes good saves often and if it was David James we'd be seeing lots more of these mistakes.

I laughed so much.

Typical West Ham player.

The rest of the team should be happy about the mistake as it hid how truly awful most of them were- Rooney was anonymous for most of the game. So much for the 'greatest striker in the world'. The less said about Heskey the better.

I feel bad for him, especially so if it starts affecting his career and life. I hope that this guy can manage to pull throguh and move on from this. :)

Yeah he messed up bad and he won't live that down. I don't think we need to rub it in anymore and make him feel even worse.

The game was yesterday, the media will forget about it as soon as something else happens.
We have a few more games left at least, someone else will cock up and he won't be on his own any more.

It was fucking appalling though, like you said it's his job and he gets paid millions of pounds for it, and I genuinely think I could have done better.
Paul Robinson still hasn't quite recovered from his mistake in goal a few years back, when he struck the ball - only for it to bounce backwards into the net.
He missed the ball. It bounced up just as he was about to kick it. It still ruined his international career though, which is a shame as he's usually quite a good goalie.

It's a sport, sometimes players make big mistakes, and the keeper is the most prone to criticism because he is the last stance. So yeah, the drop was pretty bad, but he had other good saves, the defence could have been better, and England's offence should have scored at least one more goal against a lower ranked team. So people/media should let it go and move on. It's not his fault that he's the best they have, and letting in ONE goal is normally alright, because the other 10 players should do better on offence.

The man is being attacked, attacked, over something as trivial as a game.

That's all it is. A GAME. And he made a mistake. Big fucking whoop. I guarantee you that every, single, person has made enough mistakes to fill a book. No body's perfect, as humans aren't perfect.

Why shouldn't I feel sorry for him? He made a mistake and everyone's pissed at him over something as trivial as a game.

He'll recover. Shit happens. In the end its a team game, so all of the players are accountable for the end result regardless.

I see where you're coming from.., but here's where I think you're wrong.

The world cup is more than a game, it happens once every four years and if you fuck it up then you have to wait for another four years. I don't even follow football but I'm excited for the world cup.

Add that to the fact that it was easily preventable, and I fully understand why people act the way they do.

That said, it's hard not to feel sorry for him. Everyone makes mistakes at work, but most people's only amount to buying the wrong paper for the copier.

I'm scottish, so I love him!

Not really but in an interview somewhere yesterday, Ray Winstone pretty much said all scottish goalies were rubbish, so it's nice to see this little screamer.

In all honesty though I couldn't really care. On the brightside for England though, at least this happened at the beginning of the tournament rather than in the knock out stages. I'd dread to think what'd happened to him if this happened in the semis or onwards.

We may get pissed off and as a nation dislike players who make major mistakes, especially in the later stages. Look at how Beckham was treated after getting sent off against Argentina. We don't actually kill our players however, unlike Columbia who assassinated a defender who scored an own goal back in the 90's.

OT- The entire team didn't seem to do well, echoing our performances in the warm up games. His mistake was costly and I feel bad for him. England now need strong performances against Slovenia and Algeria to get their confidence back.
