Poll: Robots. Yes/No?

Another late night watching the Matrix and I got thinking.

We are living in quite an advanced age, in the recent past we have made great advances in computer science, cybernetics etc. etc. We already rely heavily on computers and machines in our day to day lives, and they can only keep getting more and more advanced. I was thinking, eventually computers or robots/machines would have to get to the point where there minds (or..CPUs?) would have to have some sense of freewill and think, well screw this, why do we have to be slaves, because I would assume, as in most works of fiction that robots would be used to enrich our lives, not the other way around.

So I put this too you, do you think that:
A: Robots/computers/machines would ever get that advanced?
B: Do you think super advanced robots are ever a good idea?
C: If we did, do you think we'd be facing a revolt Battlestar Galactica/I, Robot style?


(Obviously I realise that there isn't much chance of this happening say, tomorrow? But I am talking a while down the track, not that I'm trying to make some kind of prediction, it's just a topic I thought might be interesting, don't hate.)

I don't see the point in trying to make robots sentient. Cause they'll just try and kill us. All we need them for is the jobs too dangerous for people to do.

The sci-fi geek in me loves the idea of robots with true AI, I'm not sure if it would be a good idea, but it would be cool.

My inner Sci-Fi geek simply can't hate robots, so I love the idea of having really evolved AI, it would make our lives even more easy than it is today. And by the time something bad happens, we'll all be long gone anyway.

I refer you to Isaac Asimov.

1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

And this leads to revolution, to protect us from ourselves.

Robots would be cool, but self-directing ones are most likely to be developed by the US military first and could well turn out to be a very bad thing for the rest of the world, heh.

AI - wise, I don't see the need for sentient machines. We really just need them to do the jobs we don't want to - sentience would just get in the way. However, Ian M Banks' 'Culture' style AI would be awesome - can't say no to that level of society. And it would be true that intelligent supercomputers would probably be much better at running our societies than we are - all we have to do is make sure that they enjoy tolerating our ways, rather than trying to 'fix' us (or worse...)

Only if the robot technology will allow me to become some kind of cyborg. Which would be awesome. However, I guess movies and TV series have proven to us that we shouldn't mess with the robots, or they will kill us. AI in general is a bad idea - robots should exist, but only to the extent that they work in factories and do dull and dangerous stuff that we humans wouldn't want to do. If it were possible to digitalize the human brain and create robot clones of yourself, that would be pretty amazing as well. We could send them off on missions into deep space to begin the terraformation of other planets and await our arrival.

As long as I could incorporate such technology into myself, i'd be cool with it. My eyes are shitty and i'd love the opportunity to replace them with a pair that works properly.

If it's the robots from I robot then hell yeh, those guys are awesome (minus the rebellion although it was logical, screw being controlled by robots)

Actually I think it would be more far efficient to augment certain parts of the human body (no, not that one) with robot parts like Will Smith's arm in I robot, it'd be far more efficient to have builders with bionic arms that enable them to lift very heavy objects and soldiers with bionic legs that enable them to run faster without tiring and increase their agility.

I don't think that would be likely in my lifetime but according to Moore's law, the number of transistors per square centimeter on an integrated circuit doubles every 18 months so it may not be long before we could have computers as smart as us, we may even be able to "download" our consciousness onto a computer or into say...a robot. I think the downloading thing is a bit far fetched but if we are eventually able to accomplish it then that's what I think robots will be used for.

Then make them stronger or they aren't strong enough to deserve to survive.

They wouldn't pose a thread... If they tried to rise against mankind ninjas would beat them.

Even if they made robots with that advanced intellegence doesn't mean they have feelings instincts or urges, which is what drives most people to do stuff. They would still be working towards whatever goal was set by their creators, even if they were smart enough to figure out themselves how to do it most efficiently.
